  1. >May 23rd is a tense time in the Loud/Santiago household.
  2. >Usually it's not a big deal, Bobby and his dad would have to be careful, stay out of her way, but it was mostly fine.
  3. >His mother would stay on the couch, watch cheesy movies, heat up some food that Abuelita dropped off, and go to bed early.
  4. >Bobby never asked about it, it was just part of growing up in the household; like painting candy skulls and having all of his aunts over for Christmas, well, most of them.
  5.
  6. >This year, there was a complication. Loan.
  7. >Bobby was awakened, along with half the neighborhood, with his parent's bedroom door bursting open and slamming against the wall.
  8. >Breakfast was tense. Mom was making eggs and flapjacks.
  9. >She set down Dad's plate first, then Bobby's then hers.
  10. >She was about to sit down when Loan piped up.
  11. >"Um... did you forget about me? It's okay if you did."
  12. >Loan could produce anxiety and imagined grudges out of thin air, but she could not sense the killing intent sitting inches from her.
  13. >His mother pushed her plate across the table, silently. "How could I forget about you...?"
  14. >"Oh, thank you." Loan says as she started eating.
  15. >His mother stands and walks out of the kitchen, heading straight for the living room to stake her claim.
  16. >"So, uh, Loan, what were your plans for today?" His dad said, just above a mutter.
  17. >"I was gonna play some games, lay around the house, really." Loan says, laughing just a bit.
  18. >"How about we have a father-daughter day? Does that sound good? Go to the mall, see a movie, go to an arcade?"
  19. >"Th-that sounds awesome!" Loan says, almost choking on eggs.
  20. >"What about me, Dad?" Bobby says, a bit of a whine leeching into his voice.
  21. >"I think you should stay here. Spend some time with your mom, make sure she doesn't burn down the house."
  22. >"She wouldn't do that." Bobby laughs.
  23. >"...Yeah. That would be crazy." Lincoln laughs nervously.
  24.
  25. >Bobby scooches onto the couch quietly. His mother looks over at him, a pile of blankets and pillows around her.
  26. >"Where'd they go?" She asks hollowly, she really isn't concerned.
  27. >"Father-daughter day, they said." Bobby says.
  28. >"Hmm." Ronnie says as she restarts the movie, some cheesy rom-com. Not her type of movie at all.
  29. >Bobby watches it intently, he kind of likes it, except for the protagonists are kind of clueless and stubborn.
  30. >"Do you like this movie?" Bobby asks, as the musci swells and the couple kiss in front of a fountain.
  31. >"No." Ronnie Anne says, wiping away a tear. "I really hate it actually."
  32. >There's a moment of silence that Bobby just knows he's not to break.
  33. >"Why do you watch then? If you hate it?" Bobby says quietly.
  34. >"Because these were my brother's favorite movies." His mother said, even quieter.
  35. >"Do you- do you want to tell me about him? About Uncle Bobby?" He says as the credits start to roll.
  36. >There's more silence.
  37. >"He was such a sweet guy. He would do anything for anyone. Never- he never said a bad thing about anyone." Bobby's mother ducks her head underneath the thick, fuzzy blanket. "I miss him everyday..."
  38. >"Am I like him?" Bobby asks.
  39. >"...Yeah, get over here..." His mother says as she motions with her blanket-clothed arms. Bobby nods and scoots over and is engulfed by blanket. "You have the same eyes, and smile, and you are a sweetheart. I bet you'll be a heartbreaker too, you- you..."
  40. >Then the tears began to really come, Bobby instinctively went to hold his mother and she wrapped him up tighter, her nails digging into his skin.
  41. >"Pl-please, no matter what happens, don't leave me alone..." She whimpers. "Bobby..."
  42.
  43. >From then on, on May 23rd, Bobby and his mother would watch movies, cuddle on the couch, and eat food that Abuelita made. No matter what.
