  86. Bio: Sivult, like all countries, has never been without its share of ne'er-do-wells, but the shifting of borders and the war a couple of decades ago have hardly created a situation where those ne'er-do-wells would be stamped out. Indeed, in the middle of the War of Annihilation, a group of wealthy burgher families in a non-occupied city in north-eastern Sivult saw both threat and opportunity in the war -- Sivult could be conquered by Kalgar, and they would lose everything... but they could also take advantage of the disorder to set up for themselves a little modicum of underground power within the city, too. And who was going to stop them? The duke? He had his hands most assuredly full. So these families, led by the Geroux family, formed a little organization, primarily operating off of intimidation and fraud, but with fingers in several pies, including murder and dealing with potential rivals... and harassing the Kalgarians. When the war ended, the Geroux family leadership proved to be about as friendly to Govitz as they had Kalgar (Sivult being subsumed would be bad news for them, after all), and they took special delight in harassing any Govitian covert attempts to gain influence in the area, even as they continued their normal operations.
  87.
  88. Such was the environment that little Lucette Lémieux grew up in, the daughter of the head of one of the families that had teamed up with the Gerouxs and become a part of the operation: specifically, the part of the operation involved in dealing with potential rivals and aiding in harassing the Govitians. Lucette grew up in an atmosphere of stealth, murder, and intrigue, and she grew up to be fairly handy with a knife, too. As a matter of fact, seven years ago an eighteen-year-old Lucette ended up chosen to be the organization's contact with Ersht covert operations in north-east Sivult; Ersht knew that there was a ring of Govitian agents in the city who were plotting something nefarious to further push Sivult towards capitulation (bad news for Ersht), and they wanted them taken care of. Who better to enlist help from than the known, fairly influential, anti-Govitz organization in the area? So the Ersht agent, one Jack Smith, met with the Geroux organization contact, Lucette, and the two of them worked together as part of the (successful) operation, on one occasion even fighting side by side when a meeting was ambushed by one of the increasingly desperate Govitian agents.
  89.
  90. Things don't last forever, though. The Lémieux family had traditionally done a good job protecting the Geroux organization from threats from without, but they hadn't counted on a large threat from within. The increasingly irate, and increasingly pro-Govitz Hardy and Lefevre families held big positions within the organization, and they plotted for years to throw the Gerouxs out. It was murder on the streets when they made their move five years ago, and the Lémieux family fought on behalf of the Geroux family... and lost. They were promptly removed from the newly-lead organization, and Lucette's father was killed. Before he died, however, he sent off his wife (a domestic servant he had fallen for) and their daughter away, out into the countryside where they would survive.
  91.
  92. Lucette changed her last name to her mother's maiden name (Courtemanche), and ended up taking on her profession, becoming the personal maid for the fourth son of the duke. She's been at this for five years now, and has on many an occasion wanted to tear her hair out. It's true that she feels a responsibility for the man she's serving (one Michael Comtois), but he's remarkably stubborn, doesn't listen, and insists upon going out on adventures and dragging her along to clean up after his inevitable messes, in addition to the frankly hard work being the closest of his maids requires. She's his minder, frankly, and she will complain about it if given the chance. She also, notably, hasn't told him anything about her past
  93.
  94. When the stories of Michael's skill with arms reached Jack's ears (and when, of course, the duke's connections ensured that said information would), it secured a meeting with the man... but Jack was not, initially, terribly impressed. Michael was idealistic and frankly rather naive, and he had even brought his maid to the meeting. Jack was poised to reject the young noble... that is, until he noticed exactly who that maid was: the contact that he had worked so successfully with years ago. After he poked a little fun at her (because, frankly, her new position was rather funny), Jack was far more receptive listening to her than to Michael, and when she convinced him that Michael would not actually be a liability, Jack brought the two of them on board the operation -- they were a package deal, after all, and Lucette had proven herself reliable in the past.
