- The Book of Omni
- --------------------Chapter 1--------------------
- Traditionally composing of Omni 1: 1-3
- 1 I, Omni, was instructed by my father, Jarom, to write on these plates to preserve our genealogy.
- 2 I have fought in many wars to save my prople from destruction by the Lamanites.
- 3 I have not lived a very moral life.
- 4 276 years have passed since Lehi arrived in the land. There have been many periods of both war and peace during that time.
- 5 282 years have now passed, and I have kept these plates as I have been instructed.
- 6 I now finish my writing, and pass these plates on to my son Amaron.
- --------------------Chapter 2--------------------
- Traditionally composing of Omni 1: 3-8
- 1 Now I, Amaron, will write a few things in the book of my ancestors.
- 2 328 years have passed and many of the immoral Nephites have died.
- 3 They refused to live a moral life and work together, and have perished because of it.
- 4 I now give the plates to my brother Chemish.
- --------------------Chapter 3--------------------
- Traditionally composing of Omni 1: 9
- 1 Now I, Chemish, will write a few things in the same book as my brother.
- 2 We keep this record from one generation to another, writing down everything that is noteworthy.
- 3 We do this as intructed by by our ancestors.
- --------------------Chapter 4--------------------
- Traditionally composing of Omni 1: 10-11
- 1 I, Abinadom, am the son of Chemish.
- 2 There have been many wars and fights between the Nephites and the Lamanites.
- 3 I have killed many Lamanites while defending my people in war.
- 4 The history of my people are engraved upon the record of the kings.
- 5 I have no lessons in morality to teach that haven't already been written. What I have said is enough.
- --------------------Chapter 5--------------------
- Traditionally composing of Omni 1: 12-30
- 1 I am Amaleki, the son of Abinadom.
- 2 I will speak a little about Mosiah, who was made king of the land of Zarahemla.
- 3 He wanted to explore and settle a new city and had many people join him.
- 4 They came to the land of Zarahemla.
- 5 They discovered a people who were lead by a king named Zarahemla and were known as Mulekites.
- 6 The Mulekites were happy to discover us because we had kept a record of history.
- 7 The Mulekites had fled The Great City when they began to destroy themselves and were destroyed by others.
- 8 They also fled and searched for a land of liberty while in the wilderness.
- 9 They also crossed the sea and found the land as our people had done.
- 10 By the time we had found them, they already had well established their city and land.
- 11 They had still had many wars and contentions among themselves occasionally.
- 12 Their language had changed compared to ours and they had no records of their peoples' history.
- 13 It was difficult to understand each other.
- 14 Mosiah taught King Zarahemla his language, who went and taught other people the language, and so on and so forth till all of Zarahemla's people knew Mosiah's language.
- 15 The Mulekites in the land of Zarahemla were given the history of our ancestors, which was also their history.
- 16 The Mulekites wrote down their own history as best as it could be remembered on the other plates.
- 17 The Mulekites and Nephites united and they appointed Mosiah as their new king.
- 18 During Mosiah's reign as king a large stone was brought to him which had unknown writings on it. King Mosiah did his best to translate the writings.
- 19 The stone gave the history of Coriantumr and his slain people.
- 20 Coriantumr was discovered by the Mulekites, where he lived for 9 cycles of the moon.
- 21 It also spoke about the words of his ancestors.
- 22 His ancestors had traveled to our land much earlier than even the Nephites seeking a land of their own.
- 23 They had destroyed themselves in war in a land to the north.
- 24 I, Amaleki, was born during the reign of King Mosiah and I have lived to see his death
- 25 King Benjamin, his son, reigns in his stead.
- 26 The reign of King Benjamin has been marked by war and bloodshed between the Nephites and the Lamanites.
- 27 We were more prepared than they were for war, and so King Benjamin was able to drive them out of Zarahemla.
- 28 I began to grow old and had no children. I knew King Benjamin was a good, moral man, and so gave these plates to him. I gave him the instructions associated with them.
- 29 I instructed him to live a moral life.
- 30 If we live a moral life, and work together, we will live a happy life.
- 31 I will write only a little more about a large group that wanted to travel back to the land of Nephi.
- 32 Their leader, Zeniff, was a strong and mighty man, but he was stubborn.
- 33 He caused many fights among the people, and all but 50 of them died in the wilderness.
- 34 They came back to Zarahemla, and got more to travel with them in hopes they could make it to the land of Nephi.
- 35 I, Amaleki, had a brother, who went with them. I never learned what happened to them.
- 36 I am about to die, and these plates are full.
- 37 I am finished with my writings.
