- "DARPA always makes such a big deal out of everything. Every time DARPA turns around, they hand them a blue ribbon or something... All I hear all day long in Berkeley is how great DARPA is at this, or how wonderful DARPA did that. DARPA, DARPA, DARPA!"
- Ties between DARPA and UC Berkeley and some examples of DARPA funded research:
- Arati Prabhakar, the current DARPA Chief, was on the College of Engineering Advisory Board at UC Berkeley, as well as the
- EECS Industrial Advisory Board. In 2012, Prabhakar was on the Engineering Advisory Board while also serving on the red team of DARPA's Defense Sciences Research Council.

- S. Shankar Sastry, the current Dean of the College of Engineering, had served as Director of Information Technology at DARPA from 1999-early 2001. Before working at DARPA, Sastry was the Director of the Electronics Research Laboratory at UC Berkeley.

- In 2014, UC Berkeley security research entered a team into the Grand Challenge cybersecurity competition, which will run until 2016. Berkeley is one of the teams competing to engineer automated network defense systems, able to detect and neutralize cyberattacks.

- In 2013, researchers from UC Berkeley joined into a collaborative project with other universities, supported by DARPA, to work on developing "physical intelligence", nano-scaled hardware with billions of connections in an attempt to mimic the human brain for autonomous robots.

- In 2011, 2.47% of Berkeley’s federal research funding came from DARPA. In 2011, UC Berkeley was one of 3 universities chosen by DARPA to help develop smart cameras that could recognize different types of human movements. Called the Mind's Eye Initiative, the project integrates computer vision and AI.

- In 2010 DAPRA funded research at UC Berkeley which became eLegs. After graduating, the student researchers started Berkeley Bionics, and then changed to Ekso Bionics after moving to Richmond. Ekso unveiled its bionic suit for military use this year (2014) in October. Another DARPA supported Exosuit research project was BLEEX, which began in 2000 and was demonstrated to the public in 2004.

- In 2009, researchers at UC Berkeley, funded by DARPA, developed a electronic control system to remotely control the movements of beetles. Electrical stimulators, a micro controller with receiver, and a battery were attached onto beetles to study the control of the beetles for military use in urban warfare situations.
