- The hunter ran to the open front door and peered out. He could see vague movement up in the tower. He leveled the rifle and got off two quick shots, then jumped back an instant before a storm of lead smashed into the store front. He ran back down the aisle to snatch two bright new tin cups off a shelf and a new broom from a stack. He threaded the cup handles over the broomstick and crimped them tight. Back at the front door, he adjusted them so the shiny bottom of one cup reflected the bell tower clearly, while the other covered the front door of the hotel.
- He went back, satisfied himself that the proprietor was down for a long winter’s snooze, then ran back to the front door. The reflections showed no activity at the hotel door. There was vague movement in the tower but no clear target. He crouched just out of the line of fire, watching the reflections.
- After a few minutes of inactivity it became apparent that the situation had reached an impasse. The reflection in the cup bottom still showed movement in the tower, but however many were there were staying carefully down behind the shielding adobe.
