5 main causes of the Russian Civil war

the Bolsheviks had many enemies:
* Social revolutionaries (angry because Lenin had closed the assembly)
* Supporters of the provisional govrnment
* Supporters of the Tsar
* Army officers (angry Lenin made peace with Germany)
* Nobles whose land had been given to the peasants
* All cooperated to bring down Bolshevik government


Allied opposition:
* Britain, America and France angry Russia had dropped out of WW1, attacked Bolsheviks - afraid because Bolsheviks wanted to cause communist revolution all over the world

Breakdown of law and order:
* The foreign powers led by the generals: Wrangel,Yudenich and Denikin. They were angry because Lenin had left the war and they wanted Russia's debts to be repaid. They were also scared of communism.
* Czech legion - czech priosners of war who mutinied, took control of Siberian railway and attacked towards Moscow
* The Bolsheviks instituted a Red Terror that killed anyone who opposed them - strikers were shot, and Trotsky even arrested the families of Red generals to keep them loyal.


Collapse of Russian Empire:
Lenin dismissed constituent assembly and ruled by decree

Political opposition:
* Mensheviks wanted another revolution but a slower one.
The Tsarists wanted the Tsar back in power
Whites where made up of many different powers including:
* The Czech legion who wanted independance which they wouldn't achieve under Bolshevik power
* The liberals and social revolutionaries wanted democracy not communism.

How did it help cause the Civil War in Russia?

Government had established itself securely in many cities, summer of 1918 onwards Communist government became more and more concerned about its survival as opposition gathered in other areas.

Russia begam to split apart before the collapse of the Provisional Govern,t. Lenin had decreed n November 1917 that territories were free to leave Russia. Many territories declared themselves independent of the RSFSR.
