  1. "Ideal" system vs. SRL system:
  2. Comparing SRL to the "Ideal" system for showcasing speedrun streams on a page:
  3.

  5. /////////// "Ideal" System, based on viewer opinion ////////////

  8. I asked this question specifically on Twitter and got a few responses: "If you managed a popular speedrunning site that showed speedrunning streams, how would you decide whose stream goes on it? Qualifications?"
  9.
  10. The following are summations of what was written on twitter and #speedrunslive, as well as what other possible ideas that would contribute to an ideal system:
  11. * Majority of streamer's schedule is speedrun-related.
  12. * Categorize stream content for every stream collected.
  13. * Randomize 10 streams out of the possible and show those (or, based on user preference, highlight the top ten relevant to the user's preferences).
  14. * Subscription based (maybe for those wanting more functionality/presence).
  15. * Allow owners of the stream system to allow or prohibit anyone they choose from being featured, based on video/audio quality, professionalism and maturity of streamer, etc.
  16. * Flag specific streams that are close to WR for their respective game, esp. if they don't get too many views to begin with.
  17.
  18. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
  19. /////////////////// SRL's Current System ///////////////////
  20. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
  21.
  22. * XX number of completed races or some other algorithm that is maintained (like x number of races in last x [time period/week/month/etc.]. If .setstream && meet algorithmic requirements && game set on twitch != blacklist game, stream shows up.
  23. * If previously acclaimed speedrunner (Example is PJ, who is well-known and well-achieved as a speedrunner), stream can be whitelisted (autoadded, regardless of requirements) by agreement of higher-ups.
  24. * If on Team SRL, can be whitelisted.
  25. * If higher-ups agree that a user's stream should not be on the streams page (no explicit reason necessary), they have the right to blacklist (autoremoved, regardless of requirements) the stream or simply remove stream from the whitelist to go under normal rules (#1).
  26. * Service is free. No extra subscription payments are required or even recommended, as it is all a free service.
  27. * Top 100 streams are shown on the front page in order of viewer numbers. If the viewer numbers are too low to be in the top 100, their stream will not show.

  33. Other than the lack of a categorization or auto-recognition of close to WR flag, both "ideal" and srl systems are pretty similar.
  34.
  35. The difficulty is finding a good balance between automated system and manual system. If entirely automated, and people understand the requirements AND only seek to get on the streams page, they will fill the minimum requirements in order to be showcased. However, if it is manual, it's subject to mods review system, and it requires a ton more work from the mod end. That was the case with Team SRL applicants before Team SRL died.
  36.
  37. The stream preference and user login deal would be interesting to see implemented. It would essentially make the site have its own "follow" page, but specified by game type, console, game name, system, whatever filter you choose. I wouldn't know how to program it, but I imagine it'd be possible, even if you only have the game title off of Twitch's API.

  41. Anyway, done rambling. I'm missing thoughts and stuff, I'm sure...
