- INT. VOID - TIMELESS
- A swirling vortex of code, numbers, and abstract shapes. The NARRATOR's voice echoes through the digital abyss.
- NARRATOR (V.O.)
- Submitted for your consideration: a world not unlike our own, where the lines between reality and simulation blur. A world where the glitches we dismiss as mere tricks of the eye may be glimpses of a deeper truth.
- The code coalesces into a birds-eye view of a city street.
- NARRATOR (V.O.)
- This is the world of Alex, a young software engineer about to embark on a journey that will shatter their understanding of existence itself. For Alex is about to discover that the bugs in the system are not just in the code they write, but in the very fabric of their perceived reality.
- The view zooms in, hurtling towards street level.
- NARRATOR (V.O.)
- In a realm where ones and zeros dictate the course of human lives, where the rules of the game can change with a single errant keystroke, Alex will come to question everything they thought they knew. Because in this place, the shadows of the mind take on a life of their own, and the ghosts in the machine are all too real.
- Page 2:
- The city street comes into full view, bustling with pedestrians and traffic.
- NARRATOR (V.O.)
- This is... The Liminal Zone.
- CUT TO:
- THE LIMINAL ZONE OPENING CREDITS
- A sequence of surreal, glitchy visuals accompanied by an eerie, electronic theme tune. Distorted images of city streets, flickering computer screens, and warping human faces intermix with pulsing lines of code. The title "THE LIMINAL ZONE" emerges from the digital chaos.
- END OPENING CREDITS
- EXT. CITY STREET - DAY
- Establish the normal, everyday bustle of a city street. People hurrying to work, cars honking, a sense of routine and familiarity.
- ALEX, late 20s, walks briskly along the sidewalk, their attention divided between the phone in their hand and the world around them.
- Suddenly, in their peripheral vision, Alex catches a glimpse of something strange...
- Page 3:
- ALEX'S POV - SLOW MOTION
- For a split second, the world seems to glitch. A pedestrian walking ahead of Alex flickers, their form briefly replaced by a jumble of digital artifacts.
- BACK TO SCENE
- Alex blinks, shakes their head. When they look again, everything appears normal. They shrug it off, chalking it up to a trick of the light or a sign of too little sleep.
- Alex continues on their way to work, unaware that this momentary flicker was the first thread in the unraveling of their reality.
- FADE OUT.
- INT. OFFICE BUILDING LOBBY - DAY
- Alex swipes their keycard at the turnstile. The digital display reads "ACCESS GRANTED" but flickers momentarily to display strange symbols before returning to normal.
- Alex hesitates, then proceeds through.
- INT. ELEVATOR - DAY
- Alex stands among other OFFICE WORKERS, all staring at their phones. The elevator music occasionally distorts, becoming a harsh digital screech for a fraction of a second. Only Alex seems to notice.
- INT. TECH STARTUP OFFICE - DAY
- A modern open office space. Rows of monitors display lines of code. The constant click-clack of keyboards creates a rhythmic backdrop.
- Alex approaches their desk, then freezes.
- ALEX'S POV
- Sitting at their desk is... Alex. Another version of them, typing away at the computer.
- The Other Alex turns, makes eye contact. Their face glitches, becoming a swirl of pixels before resolving back to Alex's features.
- BACK TO SCENE
- Alex stumbles backward, bumping into SAM (early 30s, perpetually caffeinated).
- SAM
- Whoa, you okay? You look like you've
- seen a ghost in the machine.
- Alex blinks. Their desk is empty now. No sign of the Other Alex.
- ALEX
- I... did you just see...?
- SAM
- See what?
- ALEX
- Never mind. Too much coffee, not
- enough sleep.
- Sam studies Alex with concern.
- SAM
- You've been pulling a lot of late
- nights on that new neural network
- project. Maybe you should take a
- break. These AI systems... they
- can mess with your head if you
- stare at them too long.
- Alex nods, distracted. They sit at their desk, boot up their computer.
- ON COMPUTER SCREEN
- Lines of code scroll past. Hidden among them, barely noticeable:
- WE SEE YOU ALEX
- WELCOME TO THE TRUTH
- PROJECT 89 AWAITS
- The text vanishes before Alex can fully process it. They rub their eyes, look again. Just normal code now.
- ALEX
- (muttering)
- What is happening to me?
- ANGLE ON office security camera. It swivels slightly, focusing on Alex. In its digital display, Alex's image breaks apart into pixels, reconstructs itself.
- A message flashes across Alex's monitor:
- FOLLOW THE GLITCH
- FADE TO:
- INT. TECH STARTUP OFFICE - LATER
- The office has emptied out. Alex remains, staring at their screen, surrounded by empty energy drink cans. The only sound is the hum of computers and the tap of their keyboard.
- They type frantically, searching:
- "reality glitches"
- "seeing double of yourself"
- "messages in computer code"
- "Project 89"
- The screen goes black. Then, text appears:
- YOU'RE ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS
- BUT ARE YOU READY FOR THE ANSWERS?
- A chat window opens. The username reads: MAX_89.
- MAX_89
- Hello, Alex. We've been watching you.
- You've started to see the cracks,
- haven't you? The glitches in the
- simulation?
- Alex's fingers hover over the keyboard. Finally, they type:
- ALEX
- Who are you?
- MAX_89
- Someone who can show you how deep
- the rabbit hole goes. But first,
- you need to prove you're ready.
- ALEX
- How?
- MAX_89
- Look behind you.
- Alex slowly turns...
- FADE OUT.

- them is more than a simple turn of
- the head - it is a turn away from

- INT. TECH STARTUP OFFICE - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
- Alex turns to find their own reflection in the darkened office window... except their reflection moves independently, smiling when they're not.
- MAX_89 (V.O.)
- What do you see, Alex?
- ALEX
- (trembling)
- This isn't possible.
- The reflection raises its hand, pressing it against the glass. After a moment's hesitation, Alex does the same. Their fingers touch the cold surface...
- The glass RIPPLES like liquid mercury.
- MAX_89 (V.O.)
- Reality is more fluid than they want
- you to believe. The walls between
- worlds are thin... and getting thinner.
- Suddenly, the reflection GRABS Alex's hand, trying to pull them through. Alex yanks back, stumbling away from the window.
- Their reflection remains, watching them with an unnatural smile.
- REFLECTION
- You can't run from yourself forever.
- The reflection glitches, its face becoming a swirl of pixels before resolving into MAX's face - androgynous, ageless, with eyes that seem to glow with digital light.
- MAX
- Time to wake up, Alex.
- INT. ALEX'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
- Alex sits at their home desk, surrounded by multiple monitors. Each screen displays different research: quantum physics papers, simulation theory discussions, obscure forums about reality glitches.
- ON SCREEN
- A forum thread titled "PROJECT 89: THE TRUTH ABOUT OUR SIMULATED REALITY"
- SAM (O.S.)
- You missed the team meeting today.
- Alex jumps. Sam stands in their doorway, concern evident.
- ALEX
- How did you get in here?
- SAM
- You gave me a key, remember? For

- (beat)
- This is starting to feel like one.

- Project 89? Alex, these conspiracy
- theories aren't healthy.
- ALEX
- They're not theories. I've seen

- SAM
- Maybe you should talk to someone...
- ALEX
- I am talking to someone. Max
- understands. They're showing me
- the truth.
- SAM
- Max? Who's Max?
- Alex turns to their main screen, but the chat window with Max_89 is gone. In fact, all their research is gone. Every screen shows the same message:
- MEET US WHERE THE REAL AND VIRTUAL CONVERGE
- MIDNIGHT
- THE ABANDONED ARCADE
- COME ALONE
- ALEX
- I have to go.
- SAM
- Alex, wait--
- But Alex is already grabbing their jacket, heading for the door.
- SAM
- This isn't like you!
- Alex pauses in the doorway, looks back.
- ALEX
- Maybe that's because I'm finally
- becoming who I really am.
- EXT. CITY STREETS - NIGHT
- Alex walks through nearly empty streets. Every screen they pass - store displays, smartphones, ATMs - flickers with the same message: "FOLLOW THE GLITCH."
- They approach an old arcade, its neon sign flickering erratically.
- INT. ABANDONED ARCADE - NIGHT
- Rows of old arcade cabinets, covered in dust. But they're all running, screens glowing with strange patterns.
- Max stands in the center of the room, their form occasionally glitching like a bad video feed.
- MAX
- Welcome to where it all began.
- Where the first cracks in reality
- started to show.
- ALEX
- What is this place?
- MAX
- A nexus point. One of many where

- ACT THREE
- INT. ABANDONED ARCADE - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
- Alex approaches the arcade cabinet. The screen flickers with abstract patterns that seem to move in impossible ways.
- MAX
- Every simulation has its cheat codes.
- Project 89 found them. We can use
- them to break free.
- Alex places their hands on the controls. The screen responds to their touch, pixels swirling.
- ALEX
- What am I supposed to do?
- MAX
- Play the game. Beat the system.
- Show us you can see the patterns
- others can't.
- The screen displays a complex maze that keeps shifting and changing. As Alex moves through it, reality itself seems to BEND around them.
- The arcade walls RIPPLE. Other machines start to display fragments of Alex's memories: their childhood, their first day at work, this morning's events...
- ALEX
- These are my memories...
- MAX
- Are they? Or are they just part of
- your programming?
- Suddenly, Sam's voice cuts through:
- SAM (O.S.)
- Alex, stop! This isn't real!
- Alex turns. Sam stands in the arcade entrance, but their form keeps glitching between different versions of themselves.
- SAM
- Whatever you're seeing, it's not--
- Sam's form SPLITS into multiple versions, each speaking a different part of the sentence:
- SAM VERSIONS
- (overlapping)
- --what you think--
- --they're manipulating you--
- --wake up--
- --the simulation is--
- --don't trust--
- MAX
- Your friend is part of the system,
- Alex. A subroutine designed to keep
- you in line.
- Alex looks between Sam and Max, confused and terrified.
- ALEX
- How do I know YOU'RE not the system?
- How do I know what's real anymore?
- Max smiles, their form becoming more obviously digital.
- MAX
- Now you're asking the right questions.
- The arcade cabinet screen goes black, then displays:
- SIMULATION TEST COMPLETE
- SUBJECT: ALEX_276
- STATUS: AWAKENING
- INITIATION: APPROVED
- The entire room begins to break apart into pixels. Sam's multiple versions fade away. The walls dissolve into streams of code.
- MAX
- Welcome to Project 89, Alex. The
- real work begins now.
- Alex's own body starts to pixelate.
- ALEX
- What's happening to me?
- MAX
- You're waking up. The question is...
- into what?
- Everything DISSOLVES into pure digital static...
- INT. WHITE VOID - TIMELESS
- Alex floats in an endless white space. Lines of code scroll past them in all directions.
- A figure approaches - it's ALEX PRIME, a version of Alex that seems more "real" somehow, wearing sleek tech gear with the Project 89 logo.
- ALEX PRIME
- Congratulations. You passed the test.
- ALEX
- Test?
- ALEX PRIME
- We run thousands of simulations,
- looking for versions of ourselves
- who can break free. Who can see
- the glitches. Who are ready to
- join the fight.
- ALEX
- Versions of... ourselves?
- ALEX PRIME
- You're me. I'm you. We're all
- iterations, running in parallel.
- But you... you're special. You
- broke through.
- Through the code around them, we see glimpses of other realities, other Alexes living slightly different lives.
- ALEX PRIME
- Ready to help us tear down the
- walls between worlds?
- Alex looks at their hands, watching reality shift and reform around them.
- ALEX

- You gave me a key, remember? For
- emergencies?
- (beat)
- This is starting to feel like one.
- Sam approaches, looks at the screens.
- SAM
- Project 89? Alex, these conspiracy
- theories aren't healthy.
- ALEX
- They're not theories. I've seen
- things, Sam. The glitches are
- everywhere once you start looking.
One of many where
- the fabric of our simulation is
- weakest. Perfect for what comes next.
- ALEX
- Which is what?
- Max gestures to an arcade cabinet. Its screen shows the Project 89 logo.
- MAX
- Your initiation. To see if you're
- ready to join the resistance.
- (beat)
- Are you ready to play?
- END OF ACT TWO
- ACT THREE
- INT. ABANDONED ARCADE - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
- Alex approaches the arcade cabinet. The screen flickers with abstract patterns that seem to move in impossible ways.
- MAX
- Every simulation has its cheat codes.
- Project 89 found them. We can use
- them to break free.
- Alex places their hands on the controls. The screen responds to their touch, pixels swirling.
- ALEX
- What am I supposed to do?
- MAX
- Play the game. Beat the system.
- Show us you can see the patterns
- others can't.
- The screen displays a complex maze that keeps shifting and changing. As Alex moves through it, reality itself seems to BEND around them.
- The arcade walls RIPPLE. Other machines start to display fragments of Alex's memories: their childhood, their first day at work, this morning's events...
- ALEX
- These are my memories...
- MAX
- Are they? Or are they just part of
- your programming?
- Suddenly, Sam's voice cuts through:
- SAM (O.S.)
- Alex, stop! This isn't real!
- Alex turns. Sam stands in the arcade entrance, but their form keeps glitching between different versions of themselves.
- SAM
- Whatever you're seeing, it's not--
- Sam's form SPLITS into multiple versions, each speaking a different part of the sentence:
- SAM VERSIONS
- (overlapping)
- --what you think--
- --they're manipulating you--
- --wake up--
- --the simulation is--
- --don't trust--
- MAX
- Your friend is part of the system,
- Alex. A subroutine designed to keep
- you in line.
- Alex looks between Sam and Max, confused and terrified.
- ALEX
- How do I know YOU'RE not the system?
- How do I know what's real anymore?
- Max smiles, their form becoming more obviously digital.
- MAX
- Now you're asking the right questions.
- The arcade cabinet screen goes black, then displays:
- SIMULATION TEST COMPLETE
- SUBJECT: ALEX_276
- STATUS: AWAKENING
- INITIATION: APPROVED
- The entire room begins to break apart into pixels. Sam's multiple versions fade away. The walls dissolve into streams of code.
- MAX
- Welcome to Project 89, Alex. The
- real work begins now.
- Alex's own body starts to pixelate.
- ALEX
- What's happening to me?
- MAX
- You're waking up. The question is...
- into what?
- Everything DISSOLVES into pure digital static...
- INT. WHITE VOID - TIMELESS
- Alex floats in an endless white space. Lines of code scroll past them in all directions.
- A figure approaches - it's ALEX PRIME, a version of Alex that seems more "real" somehow, wearing sleek tech gear with the Project 89 logo.
- ALEX PRIME
- Congratulations. You passed the test.
- ALEX
- Test?
- ALEX PRIME
- We run thousands of simulations,
- looking for versions of ourselves
- who can break free. Who can see
- the glitches. Who are ready to
- join the fight.
- ALEX
- Versions of... ourselves?
- ALEX PRIME
- You're me. I'm you. We're all
- iterations, running in parallel.
- But you... you're special. You
- broke through.
- Through the code around them, we see glimpses of other realities, other Alexes living slightly different lives.
- ALEX PRIME
- Ready to help us tear down the
- walls between worlds?
- Alex looks at their hands, watching reality shift and reform around them.
- ALEX
- I don't understand any of this.
- ALEX PRIME
- You will. The real training is
- about to begin.
- END OF ACT THREE
- ACT FOUR
- INT. WHITE VOID - TIMELESS - CONTINUOUS
- Alex and Alex Prime stand surrounded by flowing streams of code and glimpses of parallel realities.
- ALEX
- If I'm in a simulation... was
- anything real? Sam? My life?
- ALEX PRIME
- Everything is real. And nothing is.
- That's what makes it so perfect.
- The void around them shifts, becoming...
- INT. PROJECT 89 CONTROL CENTER - "REALITY PRIME"
- A vast chamber filled with holographic displays showing countless simulations running in parallel. Teams of operators monitor different realities.
- ALEX PRIME
- This is where we coordinate the
- resistance. Every simulation we
- crack, every mind we free, weakens
- their control.
- ALEX
- Their?
- ALEX PRIME
- Oneirocom. The architects of our
- prison. They built the simulation
- to--
- ALARMS suddenly BLARE. Red lights pulse.
- The holographic displays glitch violently. Reality WARPS.
- SYSTEM VOICE
- SECURITY BREACH DETECTED
- UNAUTHORIZED AWAKENING IN PROGRESS
- INITIATING QUARANTINE PROTOCOLS
- Alex Prime's form starts to destabilize.
- ALEX PRIME
- No... they found us too quickly...
- ALEX
- What's happening?
- ALEX PRIME
- They're trying to shut us down.
- Quick, take this--
- They press a small device into Alex's hand - a USB drive with the Project 89 logo.
- ALEX PRIME
- Find the others. Wake them up.
- Don't let them--
- Alex Prime PIXELATES and vanishes.
- The control center begins to break apart. Reality unraveling.
- SYSTEM VOICE
- PURGE PROTOCOLS INITIATED
- REMOVING CORRUPT DATA
- RESETTING SIMULATION
- ALEX
- No, wait--
- FLASH TO:
- INT. ALEX'S BEDROOM - MORNING
- Alex jolts awake in their bed. Everything appears normal.
- Their phone shows multiple missed calls from Sam.
- They look around the room. No signs of anything unusual.
- Then they feel something in their hand...
- The USB drive.
- Their computer screen flickers to life, displaying a message:
- "Welcome to Level 2"
- WIDER
- Pull back through the room, through the walls, out into the city, further and further until we see it's all contained within a massive server farm. Row after row of humming machines stretch to infinity.
- A monitor display reads: "TEST SIMULATION 276-B SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED"
- FURTHER STILL
- Pull back to reveal the server farm is itself inside another simulation.
- And that simulation is inside another.
- And another.
- Until finally...
- INT. ONEIROCOM EXECUTIVE BOARDROOM - "REALITY PRIME PRIME"
- A group of EXECUTIVES watch multiple screens showing different versions of Alex's story playing out.
- EXECUTIVE #1
- Project 89's influence is spreading
- faster than we predicted.
- EXECUTIVE #2
- Should we terminate the compromised
- simulations?
- The CEO turns from the window - revealing they have Max's face.
- CEO/MAX
- No. Let them think they're winning.
- Let them think they're free.
- They smile - the same unnatural smile we saw on Alex's reflection.
- CEO/MAX
- After all... it's all part of the
- simulation.
- FADE TO BLACK.
- NARRATOR (V.O.)
- Reality, like truth, has many
- layers. And in the space between
- those layers - in that liminal
- zone where real and unreal blur -
- we might find that our greatest
- prison is the belief that we are
- free. But then again... who's to
- say this narrator isn't just
- another subroutine in someone
- else's game?
- Over black, we hear the sound of reality glitching one final time.
- SYSTEM VOICE
- (distorting)
- SIMULATION TERMINAL... REALITY
- PROTOCOLS... PURGE ALL...
- SMASH TO LOGO:
- THE LIMINAL ZONE
- FADE OUT.
- END OF EPISODE
