  1. So, you wanna host for Sunday Variety Night?
  2. This is mostly Q&A with certain things thrown in, so you can skim it if you want. This is simply to keep shit organized and from going out of control.
  3. This first part is all about source games and what we need to actually host.
  4.
  5. What is Source?
  6. Source is an updated shitty engine from the late 90's used by Valve for literally everything. It's an awful dinosaur of an engine thats prone to crashing, bugs, and general shittiness.
  7. Generally, every source game has a cap of 32 Players in a server, for 16 vs 16 matches. However, this can be broken to go up to Sources actual cap, of 64 players. Though this leads to awful lag, instability, and crashes. So it's generally not recommended to go past 32 players.
  8.
  9. Q&A Section:
  10.
  11. What do I need to host?
  12. You only need 3 things, the server, the game, your ports forwarded, and a stable internet connection (No BR's or RU's)
  13.
  14. What games should I host?
  15. The general rule of thumb for hosting, is games EVERYONE should have. Games that fall under this are, Half-Life, Half-Life 2, CS:S, CS 1.6, TF2, Portal, Portal 2, and the Half-Life 2 Episodes. If the game you want to host does not fall under this purview, we also allow Free to Play Games, OpenTTD, Ace of Spades, and any Source Mods. If the game needs to be bought, it needs to be on Steam, and needs to be 5 dollars or lower (sales count for this price), if the game is expensive or obscure then it needs to be easily piratable, with a link to the pirate copy in the OP. Terraria and Minecraft are also welcome, however these are games that require long sessions and we'll only be playing them for one day. Remember a successful van is one that can be easily accessed by everyone. For a list of games that are in high demand for hosts, look at the bottom of the page.
  16.
  17. What about games like WoW or City of Heroes or RoR?
  18. Games like WoW and CoH are MMO's and are hosted off a central server, any games that can't be hosted from your PC directly aren't allowed. It's not a party van with /v/ if 20,000 other people are playing as well. For RoR, there's already threads up and a general for it. If you want to play it just go to one of those.
  19.
  20. How do I forward my ports?
  21. Each source mod/game has a different set of ports to forward. Just google them, same with learning how to port forwards yourself.
  22.
  23. How do I make sure my server works?
  24. Literally just hit me up on steam, via my comments or just add me, or you can always hit the server host Pomf up.
  25.
  26. Are there any mods that are needed?
  27. Yes, for custom maps, FastDL is needed. It allows your server to directly download maps onto peoples computers without the need for actually downloading and manually placing them in the maps folder. It makes everything run 10x smoother and should be looked into. Also, a different admin tool then RCON is highly recommended, since source is a piece of garbage ban evading is incredibly easy, with different custom admin tools that do different shit, it's a lot easier to control the influx and outflux of players and shitters. Mods such as RTV may be needed for ease of access map switching incase something breaks, or if people want to play something different.
  28.
  29. What about custom content like maps?
  30. Try to keep all maps in your server under a total of 5 gigs. Nobody wants to reinstall the game in only map files.
  31.
  32. I have the mods and the servers good, how do I make sure people can connect?
  33. Easy, just hit me up and tell me the IP/Password and i'll attempt to connect.
  34.
  35. Should I put a password?
  36. Yes, always when applicable, put a password on your server. Make it the same as the TF2 servers password, and don't spoonfeed newfags.
  37.
  38. The server is all set up, how do I get in on Variety Night?
  39. Simple, just hit me up and tell me either over steam or in game "I want to do this van, this sunday"
  40.
  41. Will there be other days for these vans?
  42. No, these vans are on the weekend, Friday and Saturday are specifically reserved for TF2.
  43.
  44. What if my server is a travesty upon filling up?
  45. Simple, we either keep playing or if it dies, we'll probably default to TF2 if it's not too late in the night.
  46.
  47. Is there a list of games currently on Sunday?
  48. Yes, look below. It goes down the list in order.
  49.
  50. How do I know if i'm adminning correctly?
  51. For the vans, less is more. Be lenient as hell, and only step in when someone is actively posting illegal shit.
  52.
  53. What will happen to shit hosts?
  54. Hosts who either have shit internet, or are being faggots will have their game removed from the list and won't be added back for Variety Night
  55.
  56. What will happen to new games? Where will they go on the list?
  57. New games that are being hosted will take precedent over games on the list for that sunday. I.E Someone hosting Zombie Panic will take precedent over L4D2
  58.
  59. What will happen happen if two or more people want to host on Sunday?
  60. It's always first come first serve, whoever tells me they want to host a new game on Sunday will get their game first, while the second person gets their game the following Sunday.
  61.
  62. What time should I start on sunday?
  63. Try to start between 8 pm EST and 10 PM EST, as to avoid confusion start the same time the TF2 van would.
  64.
  65. What should the thread look like?
  66. The thread should look like the TF2/L4D2 one. With the subject of "Party Van", OP picture being the logo for the game, preferably named what the game is, A quick description of "PLAY X WITH /V/", the IP, Password, and Map files. (This is needed incase FastDl fails or a map is named similar to one already installed. So people aren't instantly locked out of the game cause thats shitty)
  67.
  68. How do I make sure my the server is filled?
  69. Easy, just host one of the games in high demand, and also I will shill it on Saturday's Van's OP
  70.
  71. How do I make sure the thread doesn't die?
  72. If you link me the thread, I will bump it to keep it alive as long as possible to make sure people see it and want to play it.
  73.
  74. What does it mean for a game to be in "high demand"?
  75. High demand means that if hosted, you have a very likely chance of getting the server filled and have a successful van, I.E games people are actively looking to play. The order means nothing, these are just generally games people want to play. However, if you want to host a more obscure or not in high demand game, simply ask around and see if people would be interested in playing.
  76.
  77. Heres the list of games currently in high demand:
  78. Dystopia
  79. Zombie Panic Source
  80. Zombie Master
  81. Synergy
  82. Half-Life 1 Multiplayer
  83. Obsidian Conflict

  88. Counter Strike: Source
  89. Counter Strike 1.6
  90. Team Fortress Classic
  91. The Hidden

  93.
  94. How do I see the list of games that are already being played on Sundays?
  95.
  96. Heres the list of games currently being played on Sundays in order:
  97. Team Fortress 2
  98. Left 4 Dead 2
  99.
  100. (Note, TF2 will always be the buffer between the restart of the games. If you want to know what games are being played that Sunday, just ask)
