  1. >You awoke, like any other day, underneath your comfy blankets next to your Natsuki droid.
  2. >Sitting up, you stretch and yawn, throwing your blanket off before you open your eyes.
  3. >Your room is awfully bright today, you think as your eyes take a moment to adjust. Must've left the blinds open.
  4. >As your vision returns to you, you notice that this is not, in fact, your cozy room. It's a field.
  5. >Looking to your side where Nat usually slept, you noticed that there was no beautiful Doki. Instead, there were pillows in her spot.
  6. >The question of how you got here flicked into your head, but you didn't panic. Something about this place was... ethereal. Surreal, yet calming.
  7. >Gazing out over your bed, you observed the field of grain that you seemed to be situated in. It gently swayed in the breeze, though things were eerily quiet. The sky was a brilliant shade of blue, and the clouds hung still.
  8. >In search of answers, you turned and got out of bed. Retrieving your slippers from underneath your mattress, you slipped them on and began trekking through the chest high field.
  9. >You walked, yet you didn't tire. Usually in the morning, you'd want food and drink for breakfast.
  10. >But walking through this field, you didn't need any of that. Hell, you didn't even need to use the bathroom.
  11. >Bringing up your hands as you walked, you pushed a finger into your palm. Sure enough, you struck flesh and your finger stopped.
  12. >Either that tip about figuring out you were dreaming was full of it, or you really were in some strange field in your pajamas.
  13. >Over the field, you spotted something. A building? Maybe you could find answers there.
  14. >Coming to the edge of the field, it cleared to an empty road. On the other side sat the building, a diner with a few people inside, but no vehicles in the parking lot.
  15. >You looked both ways down the street. No cars in sight either way, and it seemed to go on forever.
  16. >Making your way across the road, you walked through the parking lot and pushed your way into the diner, the door gliding open as you pressed into it.
  17. >The few patrons at the tables didn't pay you any mind as you entered; in fact, the only person that seemed to notice you were there was behind the counter.
  18. >Someone you recognized as a Sayori droid. She gave you a small wave as she turned to retrieve something from the kitchen.
  19. >You looked around, a slow rock song playing over the speakers of the diner. Not recognizing anyone else, you figured you could probably get answers from her. Pressing forward into the restaurant, you took a seat on one of the stools.
  20. >She turned back to the bar, and approached you with a smile.
  21. >"Hey, Officer Anon! What can I get for ya?" She asked, clicking a pen and bringing up a notepad.
  22. "Hi, I was just... wait, how did you know my name?" You asked.
  23. >"You think I wouldn't recognize you? You saved me! Remember, that gang had kidnapped me and a few other Dokidroids for ransom money, and you and your partner busted in like-" She brings up her hand, mimicking aiming a gun with a serious look on her face. "Boom, boom, boom!" The serious look fades back to a smile as you recall the event.
  24. >You recalled it in your head effortlessly, but that must've been like, sixty years ago. Back when Ty and you were kicking ass on the DPS, before he passed on following a gun fight gone wrong.
  25. "Right. Sorry I didn't recognize ya, there's quite a few Sayoris out there." You said.
  26. >"Mm, no problem! So, anything I can help you with?"
  27. "Well, mostly, I was wondering where I was. See, I woke up in that field out there." You pointed behind you to the door, continuing to speak to her. Her face became troubled as you talked.
  28. >"Well, I'm not too good with directions. Uh, could I get someone else to help you?" She said, a hint of nervousness in her voice.
  29. "Sure, no problem." You said.
  30. >"Want anything to eat? It'll be on the house for such a hero!" She said, nervousness leaving her at your acceptance.
  31. "Uh, just a coffee, I guess."
  32. >"Sure, I'll brew up a fresh pot, just for you!" She said with a bubbly excitement, stepping away from the counter.
  33. "Thanks."
  34. >You sat there, pondering the mysterious circumstances, recalling the past. You did rescue some kidnapped Dokis, but if you remembered right, that Sayori worked in a daycare with her husband. A lot can change in sixty years, you guess.
  35. >Sayori sat a plate of food at the seat next to you, assuring you that your coffee would be done soon. You thanked her once more, and continued to think, but the smell of the food caught your attention.
  36. >Peering over to the plate, you observed it. A stack of waffles, garnished with fried chicken strips and covered in maple syrup, a cup of orange juice and a biscuit to the side.
  37. >Smiling to yourself, you remembered all the times Ty had gotten this exact meal before the two of you would go on patrol. A nice reminder of the past. You couldn't believe it'd been almost fifty years since he'd been gunned down. You and Nat kept his husband
  38. Emmett company after that, but it wasn't long before the cancerous tumors originating in his legs overcame him and he joined his lover.
  39. >"Hey! Big man! Took ya long enough!" A familiar voice assaulted your ears as you felt a hand on your shoulder.
  40. "What?" You respond, looking up at the source of the noise. A large black man, dressed in a policeman's uniform.
  41. >"Come on, Anon! Remember me?" He said, sitting down beside you and turning to face you. Shock overtook you.
  42. "T-Ty?" You stammered out, nearly falling out of your chair.
  43. >"You know it!" He began to tear into his food, before turning back to you with his mouth still full. "So, what happened? Your geriatric ass fall down the stairs or somethin'?"
  44. "What are you talking about? Ty, you're not supposed to be here, you're dead!"
  45. >"I ain't the only one, baby. Yo, Sayo! Pass me one of them silver trays, the real shiny ones." With the blue doki handing him the eatery, he turned it to you, your face reflecting in the metal.
  46. >You were nearly a hundred years old; and yet, your face didn't look a day past thirty. Hell, maybe twenty-five. Your balding head was full of hair. You brought your hand up and felt your face where wrinkles had once been, and felt smooth skin.
  47. "What the fuck..." You muttered in horror at the sight of your young self. Had you not been dead already, you may have had a heart attack.
  48. >"Yep. So, back to the question. How'd it happen?" Ty said, handing the tray back to Sayori.
  49. "I-I don't know! I don't think anything happened, man! I took my medicine, I went to bed, I kissed Natsuki goodnight- oh my god, what happened to Natsuki? Do droids come to the afterlife? Oh, fuck, fuck, fuck!" Panic sets in.
  50. >"Hold up, man. Yo bitch ass still freaks out like this?" He chuckled, and pulled you close. "Anon. Who is that?" He points toward Sayori.
  51. "Sayori." You shakily get out.
  52. >"Sayo, come here for a second."
  53. >"Okie!" She comes over.
  54. >"Stick your hand out." He tells her, and she does so. He takes your hand, and places it in hers. You feel warmth, comfort. A human touch.
  55. >If there was one thing DokiCorp never got quite right, it was the feel of handholding. It was close, but not like this.
  56. >This was a human body.
  57. >She smiled as you retracted your hand. Confused, you turned back to Ty.
  58. >"She was a droid, wasn't she? One we saved in that gang fight?"
  59. "Yeah... but how did she get here?"
  60. >"Oh, that's easy! After my hubby passed, I just didn't bother recharging any more. After quitting my job and relaxing at home, I went into sleep mode when I was almost out of power a few weeks later, and I showed up here! Then, me and him opened this place together! We always wanted to have a restaurant, but never had the money." She explained while pouring your coffee.
  61. "I see. So... that means that..." You trailed off, at a loss for words, staring into the blackness of your drink.
  62. >"You'll be seeing her soon enough, white boy! I'm sure that girl of yours ain't gonna be far behind ya."
  63. "Yeah..." That would settle your worries, but your thoughts drifted further than your spouse.
  64. >You had a family. Kids, now old as dirt themselves. Grandkids. Great grandkids.
  65. >Could they really handle you leaving? And their mom, grandma, great grandma too?
  66. >Did you even have a choice?
  67. >Your heart broke at the thought of your loving family crying over you. Of your beautiful wife having to bury you.
  68. >Tears welled, and dropped into your dark roast.
  69. >"Aw, come on, man." The voice spoke once more, pulling you closer into what would be called a brohug. "I know it's a bitch. Dyin' sucks. But everybody's gotta do it, baby."
  70. "But my family, man. How can I just leave them all behind?"
  71. >"Shit, you did have a big ol' family didn't you?" You give him an inquisitive look. You only had two kids when he died, and they were barely in their teens. "You think I been sittin' on my ass up here? I look down every once and a while, see what's goin' on. Besides, they'll be fine. I know it's gotta be different when it's your old man, but they've been through it before with your dad, right?"
  72. "Yeah, I guess so."
  73. >"They'll be alright, man. 'Sides, you can go down and check on em whenever you want." He smiled and returned to his meal. "Well, after a while. Pretty sure you gotta wait a long-ass time before you can."
  74. "Really?" Your face scrunches up incredulously.
  75. >"Yep. Took me like two months before I could even go see Emmett."
  76. "Damn." You wiped the tears away and sat up in your chair. "Hey, where is he, by the way?"
  77. >"Oh, he's at home. We got this pimpin' place, now. He's probably writing a poem or some shit. I usually swing by here and grab somethin' to munch on every mornin' by myself." He laughs.
  78. "Fuckin' dork. Did he, uh..." You gesture down to your legs.
  79. >"Yeah, yeah. He got em back. Seems like whatever happens brings you to your prime, limbs and all."
  80. "Huh."
  81. >"Now that that's all squared away, grab some food and stop bein' such a sad sack with ya white ass. Ain't seen a man in fifty somethin' years and can't have some fuckin' lunch with him, shit." He said, feigning annoyance with a goofy smirk on his face.
  82. >You felt a twang of bittersweetness, but at the same time, an intense calmness on your soul. You picked up the menu and looked it over.
  83.
  84. >You sat outside of the diner, back against the wall and butt on the pavement.
  85. >For the past month you've been like this, counting the days.
  86. >Every morning, Ty comes by and you have breakfast.
  87. >Every other night, you go with him and hang out with him and Emmett for a while.
  88. >You'd also taken the opportunity to meet your other family and friends who had passed along the way.
  89. >But you're always back here. You could wait at your residence; Ty helped you figure out how to get it. You sort of just will it into existence and then you can access it whenever you want.
  90. >But you wouldn't want to miss her, leave her here guessing like you were.
  91. >Speaking of guessing, as to when it would happen was anyone's guess. She was an up-to-date Dokidroid X7; who knows how long they last on one charge. Or if she would even just stop recharging, or if she'd stay for your family.
  92. >Even if you had to wait forever, though, you'd do it. For her.
  93. >The morning felt misty, though the sky was that same blue. Dew covered the grass and grain as you watched the field.
  94. >Then, a rustling.
  95. >You looked toward it. Sometimes that happened; just somebody that was tangentially related to you in some capacity. Seems like this entrance was for people that knew you, though there was likely some other binding factor.
  96. >The grain parted. Out stumbled a short girl; shorter than the grain, with pink hair, wearing pajamas. She wore a confused look on her face, and walked toward the diner as you were stunned by her beauty.
  97. >Walking past you, she almost pushed into the door when you spoke.
  98. "Natsuki!" You exclaimed.
  99. >"Huh?" She looked down at you as you hopped up beside her. Looking at your face, her eyes lit up. "Anon! Shit, I almost didn't recognize you since you're not, well, old anymore." You wrapped her in a hug.
  100. "Oh, I missed you so much, baby." You say, your head pressed into her hair.
  101. >"And I missed you too!" After a moment, she pulled away and punched you, eliciting a yelp from both of you.
  102. "Ouch! What was that for?" You ask.
  103. >"Couldn't you have died not in bed? It's kind of fucked up to wake up next to a corpse!" She rubbed her wrist. "What's with these joints? Haven't had something this weak since the Year One model." You gave her a look of questioning.
  104. "Sorry, next time I'll die at a more convenient time." You state in a silly tone. She looks up at you and gives that same giggle that she always did as her face of slight pain turned to one of content.
  105. >"You better. Anyways, is there a repair technician or something in heaven? Might need to get this hand replaced."
  106. "Not quite. This diner's pretty good, though. Wanna go get some breakfast and catch up? Think someone in here might be able to explain it to ya."
  107. >"Sure, sounds good." You reach to hold open the door.
  108. "Then after you! I'll tell ya, the food here is heavenly." The pun earned you a light jab as you walked in beside your Natsu.
  109. >It was a scary prospect at first, but now that you were here with her, you were happy.
  110. >You were certain to see your family again, and now the one who had made your life heaven on earth could make your afterlife heaven in, well, heaven.
  111. >Things would be okay.
