In 33 AD, a Roman Tribune in Judea is tasked to find the missing body of Jesus Christ who rose from the dead.
Jerusalem, 33 AD. Clavius (played by Joseph Fiennes) is a senior officer in the Roman army. He spends most of his time putting down rebellions but recently he has been given a different task. He is to be the officer-in-command at a crucifixion and ensure that no incidents occur at or after the executions. When the body of one of the executed disappears from its tomb, his own reputation is at stake and he does his utmost to recover it. The man who disappeared was known as Yeshua, or Jesus...
The effects of Christ&#39;s crucifixion and subsequently arising from the dead and how these events affected a Roman tribune are the story-line behind this film.<br/><br/>Joseph Fiennes nicely plays the title character who goes from a hard-boiled member of the Roman legion to sort of a peace activist and therefore gives up his legion way of existence.<br/><br/>The film opens with turmoil in Judea and the Roman attempts to put down the rebellion and the subsequent crucifixion. After Christ is entombed, only to have his body removed from the cave, the film&#39;s thrust gets into attempts to locate the body and question various conspirators. <br/><br/>Peter Firth is wonderful as Pontus Pilate, who will do anything to impress the the Emperor&#39;s forthcoming visit.
I gave this a 5 due to the mistake the film have. <br/><br/>In the first 15 minutes or so of the movie, the roman soldiers fought rebels which includes Barabbas and killed. Then the Tribune went on to do his role seeing the last moments of Jesus on the cross. As we all know from the bible, Barabbas was traded for Jesus so this film portrayed in error at the beginning which thus disappointed me.<br/><br/>The rest of the movie was then greatly affected by my review which now I have to be generous enough to rate this a 5.<br/><br/>Too bad the rest of the movie is good to watch, I could&#39;ve rated it a 7 or better but with this big error, this is the best and fair I can give it.
With intelligence and great moviemaking skill, [Reynolds] has created a classic variation on a venerated ancient theme.
