The essay should be structured as an argument in which the writer expresses a point of view which is well-reasoned and supported with evidence and must include a minimum of three outside scholarly sources. (Please note: websites—unless connected to an educational site—are unacceptable sources.) Class texts may be used for one of the sources.) Students are encouraged to examine issues related to their academic major or career and personal interests including law, psychology, education, work force, politics, sports, etc. For example, a student may want to investigate how gender inequity is at play when colleges and universities do not comply with Title IX, or what the effects are on gender construction of complying (or not complying) are; sexual harassment (in education, the corporate world or institutions that are traditionally male- or female-dominated); pay equity issues (workforce), sexual trafficking of women (international, national); gender-related church policies (including/excluding women or gays as ministers, priests, rabbis); domestic violence, pornography, domestic and/or sexual violence; women and gays in military, gay marriage; body image and eating disorders (in men or women, or both). The issue MUST be examined and discussed against the backdrop of gender construction theories, and illustrate the student’s mastery of its basic concepts. Topics must be submitted for approval on the date indicated, or a penalty will be assessed against the paper grade.
