- Let's just go straight home today and take my time slowly burning through the rest of the day.
- I took my phone out and confirmed the time.
- "Well, if you don't have any special plans...Can I come over to your room?"
- I was paying attention to the conversation at the student council meeting so I didn't realize Kei had sent a message.
- Although it had already been 30 minutes, since she didn't retract it or offer a follow up, Kei was probably still waiting for me.
- I decided to reply to her now because I didn't have anything special lined up after that.
- Although we were dating, we haven't been able to make it public yet.
- If I wanted the two of us to spend time together without being noticed, the places I could choose were very limited.
- That being said, the dormitory isn't safe as well. Rather, even if we were seen once in that situation, it could be the decisive blow.
- But maybe when it came to that, we would be able to say it delightedly instead.
- "Want to come to my room?" I replied to her like this, and within a second, it showed that it had been read.
- Was it just a coincidence that she was playing with my phone, or was she just waiting for her reply?
- "I wanna go!" That was the short reply from Kei.
- "Can I come over right now!?"
- Looking at the messages coming one after the other, I replied that I would go back now, and that she could come whenever she wanted in 20 minutes or so.
- All that's left was to wait for Kei to come over with the usual stuff.
- Even if someone else was on the same floor, Kei would be able to bluff her way out of it somehow
- It took me almost 10 minutes to get back, and I didn't lock the door. Instead, I used the time to simply clean my room. Suddenly, I heard three fierce knocks on the door.
- Before, I decided with her on a few secret codes for a secret meeting. Although it was mostly ways to ring the doorbell, I asked Kei to knock in urgent situations.
- That's because in a dormitory that was frequented by students, sometimes you couldn't open and close the door at leisure, so knocking was meant to decide if it was that situation or not.
- Then in an extremely urgent and dangerous situation, entering without a signal was also allowed.
- "I'm coming in!"
- Kei replied as she panickedly got in through the door.
- Then she used force to push the door shut, as if she was letting out a breath to calm herself down.
- "I really panicked when I saw the elevator stop at the 4th floor~!"
- Probably because her heart was beating too quickly, Kei pressed her hand on her chest.
- Since the most difficult barrier to get through was the corridor, it was no wonder that Kei was panicking.
- "It's impossible to hide it forever."
- "I know that..."
- I put Kei's shoes in the shoe closet.
- Then I locked the door just in case, adding a U lock.
- This way even if someone came here, I can solve it by just not letting them in.
- However, using a U lock was somewhat unnatural earlier.
- I hadn't planned to use this, but I did it because of the precedence set by Amasawa. (idk if its her, closest name I know)
- It was better than accidentally letting someone in the room and exposing the world with only me and Kei.
- And even if someone urgent happens and I had to go, I only needed to prepare to go out on this side.
- Tell them my room was a mess, so stay outside for a while, I'll be right out.
- And then after leaving with them, Kei would be able to calmly walk out of the room.
- "Whew...I'll calm down..."
- Kei, who was sitting on the bed, said so in relief.
- "That's great."
- Although there were especially many students who came home in the evening.
- But, the risk of inviting someone in the middle of the night was even bigger. Because although the number of people coming in and out would have been reduced by quite a bit, it would be a big problem if someone learns that a girl had entered my room in the middle of the night.
- That's why the daytime on a day off, or a night on the weekday was the most appropriate time.
- Even if the relationship was exposed, it would be one of the acceptable behaviors.
- "What can I get you to drink?"
- I talked to Kei after she calmed down, not expecting her to panic and run from the living room to the kitchen.
- "I'll do it."
- "Whoa, what are you doing? You wouldn't normally do this."
- "It's hard when your left hand is injured, right? Even I know how to boil water."
- It seems like she was worried about my injury.
- "Then I'll leave it to you..."
- "Mhm. I'll have black tea, what would you like, Kiyotaka?"
- "Yeah...I'll have the same as you, Kei."
- I was planning to match her only because I wanted to lighten the workload on Kei as much as possible, but I don't know if it backfired or not. She then revealed a disgruntled look.
- "You don't believe me, don't you?"
- "...I see, then I'll have a cup of coffee."
- "Leave it to me! I think I remember it being in that cupboard over there?"
- Saying that, Kei opened up the kitchen cabinet.
- Then she probably noticed my gaze, so she gave me to go to the living room and wait nicely.
- It would be troublesome if I made Kei angry, so I decided to watch TV and wait for her.
- "Right, I was thinking of telling you when we met earlier, Kiyotaka, you have a big responsibility now."
- As soon as I picked up the TV remote, those words flew in from the kitchen.
- "What's wrong, saying this all of a sudden."
- "Because you've gotten a full score in math, wouldn't it be worse for me to bring up the dating thing on my end?"
- I thought it would be something like this.
- Indeed, if Kei were to open up about us dating at this stage, it would cause some controversy...
- "What would happen if it became public that we're dating..."
- "So I guess we should continue with this for a while."
- "It can't be helped... It's annoying, making it sound like I'm dating you because of your status."
- "Is dating because of status a bad thing?"
- "No, I'm not saying it's bad either."
- "Like dating a cute girl is a symbol of status for guys, right? Wouldn't it be a little too harsh to ask for people not to want that?"
- Of course, everyone's preferences for appearance is different, and nothing is absolute.
- But even so, I've roughly learned that this extensive yet ordinary standard and it's significance exists.
- I made some negative comments about dating for status, but got no response. I thought she was thinking about how she should refute that, but I didn't expect her to just slowly show her face.
- "Me, am I cute?"
- It didn't seem like she was thinking about how she should rebut me.
- She seems to be just focusing on the part about dating a cute girl.
- "Would you want to date someone who you don't find cute?"
- Kei with her upturned lip tried her best to wander away as if trying to escape the intertwined gazes of the two of us.
- The kettle made it's boiling sound.
- What makes a person think someone else was cute wasn't just limited to appearance. Personality and stature, voice and manner, family background and upbringing. Countless factors overlap together to create feelings of love in others.
- "Ahhh... me too, I also think you're super handsome, Kiyotaka."
- Obviously I wasn't seeking the same answer, but Kei replied with it, shrinking back into the kitchen as she said so.
- I listened to the sound of boiling water and the sound of it being poured into a cup, while sifting through the TV channels pointlessly and repetitively.
- It didn't take long for Kei, who finished with her work, to return, broadly placing the cup with coffee onto the table. And the black tea that Kei clearly said she wanted had somehow turned into Café au lait.
- "Thanks."
- "You're welcome."
- We spread out the textbooks from the first year on the table.
- And we got the notebooks and pens ready, just in case, and acted as if we were studying.
- That way, if something unexpected happens, we can bluff our way through using the excuse of us studying.
- If possible, I didn't want that situation to occur.
- From the moment we entered the room till now, everything was based on the strategy that Amasawa had developed.
- After that, we spend our time on unimportant topics.
- Starting from today's run in at school, and going back a few days to what happened then.
- Who we met up with in Golden Week, and what kind of TV we watched.
- I looked at the pictures Kei took, wasting time together.
- We discussed all sorts of topics, long or short, sometimes switching over with no delay,
- The two of us shared what seemed like an unnecessary amount of time. But I knew, that this wasn't a bad thing.
- Unconsciously, I seem to be starting to understand what love is.
- An indoor date with Kei, sometimes laughing, sometimes angry with me, showing me all kinds of different expressions.
- But as each topic was burnt through, the conversation between us decreased, and the casual chitchat disappeared. Silence increased.
- It was clear that the air in the room had changed into something unlike what it had been previously.
- Between the two of us, it began to feel like something.
- Began to realize something.
- No, it's not some kind of unknown presence.
- I have come to know what it was.
- The feeling of wanting to touch her, of craving a response. Those feelings were expanding.
- This, this is something that never can be easily spoken.
- Only our eyes that were looking at each other could communicate that.
- But it was never easy to take that step as well.
- No matter how much you plan to see through and understand the other person, you need to consider even the 1 in 10,000 risks.
- Although both parties were supposed to have the same intentions, you need to consider the possibility that they may not.
- If you were rejected, the negative feelings would gush out like a geyser.
- Even so-
- I'm still trying to catch Kei's gaze as she tries to run away.
- Could I? But...between us, our feelings collide with each other.
- Soon, as if she had given up, Kei gave up on her escape.
- The more time freezes and stagnates, the more you can feel it's slow passage...
- We gradually shortened the distance between us, bringing our cheeks closer to each other.
- We finally reached the distance where we could feel each other's breath, and the warmness of our skin.
- From Kei's mouth was the scent of coffee and milk.
- In 2, no, only 1 second, our lips would touch.
- --Ding dong.
- Our time alone for the two of us was ruthlessly broken by the door ringing.
- I didn't even get to touch the thin layer of skin on her lips.
- My consciousness which was just about to drift away and dissipate was suddenly brought back into reality.
