- “We’re almost done,” Bonesaw said carefully. “But we might have missed something. Do a sweep of the third metacarpal lobe and if you see anything there, bring it back through the web valves so it can’t re-infect the rest of the brain.”
- T was silent for a moment. “...Understood,” he said, and slunk back into Kumonga’s body to get to work. If he really understood, he’d know what Bonesaw’s play was. The third metacarpal lobe didn’t exist- metacarpal was a term referring to the bones of the hand, but anyone without the appropriate biological knowledge wouldn’t be able to tell you that. T knew every piece of Kumonga’s body by name, however, and would easily spot the mistake and understand the deception. More importantly, an implant in Kumonga’s third leg from the right contained a powerful paralyzing agent. If T grabbed the agent and brought it through the web valves, which Bonesaw had installed with an external port in Kumonga’s neck, right where Yellow stood, focused on her healing…
- Long, tense moments passed in silence, and with a sudden burst of activity, it was over. The web valve near Yellow exploded with violent force, releasing a thick yellow pus like a baking soda volcano. The pus rained down on Yellow in fat globs, more than enough to lock up her entire body. Even enough to fill her water bottle spread over her entire body would be... well, not fatal, but enough to keep her from moving for the next few days. Enough to ensure that she was forced out of the picture. Non-lethal, sure, but she had earned that much. Bonesaw wouldn't feel right killing her simply for being in the way.
- Bonesaw's thoughts stopped short when the pus fell right through her, as if she wasn't really there. Her hand drooped slowly, and a silver hand on her shoulder materialized, followed by the rest of Danny's invisible body. He'd seen the trick and waited to save Yellow, but how had he known? As far as he could tell, Kumonga wasn't fully fixed, unless...
- The healing. If Yellow knew where to fix, she'd also know when the job was done. She must have guessed that Bonesaw was using the nebulous status of the job against her, and warned Danny through that network of theirs. Yellow turned slowly, meeting Bonesaw's eyes for a brief moment as Danny lifted her with one hand and began to carry her back towards the cage.
