  1. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 - FAQ
  2.
  3. What is required for Any%?
  4. To finish an Any% run, you must make your way to Syrup Castle 40 and defeat the final boss. There are 40 levels in the game, but I only need to play through 20 of them to beat it.
  5.
  6. Why do you split differently than vlackSR?
  7. He splits when he enters the final door of each level. I split when I come out from the bank area after each level. I do this because if I have any spare coins at the end of a level, I don't want that time loss to come out of my next split, that doesn't make sense to me. Also, putting aside the fact that it is completely illogical to split when vlackSR splits, it's at a terrible time to split. It seems like you would have to rush to the spacebar instead of splitting during downtime, where it can always be consistent. Here are vlackSR's 25:33 WR splits using my splitting method (http://i.imgur.com/UiVDQ3q.png).

  9. Why are you skipping coins? Why are you getting coins?
  10. If you hold up and press B, Wario will hold up a (+) coin. This is a coin that is worth 10 individual coins, but you need 10 coins from the level you're in to be able to make one of these. At the end of most levels, there is a locked door that requires a (+) to open. You may think that I should just collect 10 coins and not go out of my way to avoid other coins, but that's incorrect. After every level, I go to the bank to deposit any spare coins I have left over. If I have ANY spare coins left over after a level, I lose 2-3 seconds, or even more depending on how many coins I collected. This should help to explain why I split differently as well.

  12. Why are you using Jet Wario so much? Do you ever intentionally use anything else?
  13. In Any%, I want to ALWAYS be using Jet Wario. It's fast and allows me to fly over the majority of a lot of the levels in the game. It even makes really cool tricks like the one in Rice Beach 04 possible. It is necessary that I use it if I want to achieve a good time.
  14.
  15. What is movement like in this game?
  16. First of all, when I jump, holding up/right or up/left is a lot faster than simply holding right or left and jumping. Because of this, for levels that I am not Jet Wario in, I always want to be jumping in this way. When I am Jet Wario, movement is very technical. To maintain my height while flying in a straight line, I tap B twice really quickly. If I delay the second press, I will lose height which, depending on the situation, can end the run. When I turn left while flying right, I immediately stop using the jet and lose height, so if I want to maintain my height, I need to press left/B or right/B as soon as possible. You may see that if I wait too long after pressing B once, I start losing height, this can be a good thing if I am fully aware of what I'm doing, but it's usually a bad thing. You may see me keep my horizontal speed, but start losing height slowly, way before the jet should run out naturally. This is because, while flying, if you tap A/B quickly, it starts losing height. The first instance of me using this is in the first level I have Jet Wario actually, so keep your eye out for what I mean. A good place where you can see why it's helpful is the first room of Rice Beach 05. Also, in some levels, you might see me breaking full blocks without Bull Wario. I do this by hitting the block once while crouching, then again my releasing the down button, making Wario stand up midair and allowing him to hit the block a second time. The first time you see this in Any% is Stove Canyon 20.
  17.
  18. How did you skip that level?
  19. In Any%, we skip a handful of levels: Rice Beach 01, ALL of Mt. Teapot, Stove Canyon 21, Stove Canyon 23, SS Tea Cup 28, and Parsley Woods 31. To do this I need to press either right and up or right and down at the same exact time. To explain this, I'll use Rice Beach 01 skip as an example. In this picture (http://imgur.com/ybHMpam), you can see that on the map, Wario has one option open to him: down. When the level is beat, a second option opens: right. For some reason, the right input has priority over both the up and down inputs. In this situation, when right and down are pressed on the same frame, it reads the down input as Wario needing to move, because down is a perfectly legal move on this map, but it gives the right input priority, so it moves Wario on to the next level, as shown here (http://i.imgur.com/J2pfFDM.jpg). Left does not take priority over up and down, so any skip that is done is used only with right and up or right and down. In this picture, you can see that down is a legal move, and after Mt. Teapot is finished, right would be a legal move, so the same trick can be used from the main map to skip entire worlds (http://i.imgur.com/wIaQ2Qm.jpg). Fun fact: more skips would be possible if the controller would allow left and right or up and down to be pressed at the same time.
  20.
  21. You have a typo in your splits. It says Parsley Woods 31/32, then Parsely Woods 33-36. Which one is it?
  22. This is probably the part of the game that I get the greatest kick out of. At the end of Parsley Woods 32, there is a switch. This switch drains the lake. When the lake is drained, the world name changes from Parsley Woods to Parsely Woods. It's ridiculous and it makes no sense, but I love it. Before (http://i.imgur.com/4MqkeIK.jpg) and after (http://i.imgur.com/yatPQMI.jpg).
  23.
  24. What did you just do in Parsely Woods 35?
  25. This is and OoB in the game. I have no clue why it works. I get on the first elevated part of the level, fly backwards a full screen, go all the way over the right side of the screen I'm on, shift the camera to follow me, hop up a step, get in view of the next room, fly left 3 screens, go all the way over the right side of the screen I'm on, shift the camera to follow me, and fly to the end, where there is an invisible door waiting to be entered. It skips a VERY long autoscroller, so I need to get this trick.

  27. If there is a question you have that I did not explain in this FAQ, please let me know! I'd love to make this as detailed as I can so it's not a confusing run to watch! :)
