History Vocabulary - On the worksheet, match the definitions to words in the sentences.
1 invention - invent (invented), inventive
2 kingdom
3 rule (over) - ruler, ruling
4 period - periodic, periodization (dividing history into distinct periods)
5 construct - construction, constructive
6 restrict - restriction, restrictive
7 ancient
8 society - societal (social, socialize, socialism, socialization, etc.)
9 document - document (v), documentation, documentary
10 hierarchy - hierarchical
   (“hier” in this word sounds like “hire” or “higher”; the ‘ch’ in “archy” sounds like /k/)
11 found - foundation
12 civilization - civilize (ing/ed)
13 settler - settle, settlement
   (A settler goes to live somewhere new, that isn’t already an established community.)
14 establish - establishment
15 overthrow - overthrow (n)
   (The grammar follows “throw”: overthrow - overthrew - overthrown)
16 monarchy - monarch
17 revolution - revolutionary (adj or noun)
18 declare - declaration, declarative
- prehistoric: even older than “ancient”, because it means “before history”
- oligarchy: government by the few (but not just one); nowadays usually the very rich
