- The Joker is back with a vengeance, and Gotham's newest Dark Knight needs answers as he stands alone to face Gotham's most infamous Clown Prince of Crime.
- In latter-21st-century Gotham City, The Jokerz, a street gang enamored of the city's infamous Clown Prince Of Crime, is breaking into a high-tech engineering plant to steal a powerful generator, a crime stopped by the new Batman (Terry McGuiness) and which puzzles Terry and his mentor, the elderly original Batman Bruce Wayne. The reason for this and other "geek junk" thefts is a mystery even to The Jokerz gang, who are now working for someone claiming to be the original Joker himself. When he makes an appearence at a charity function attended by Bruce Wayne (cover to steal another generator), the Joker taunts Wayne, and later sends his minions to attack Terry McGuiness while he attacks the Batcave. But the original Joker died forty years earlier, and why does this new Joker want high-tech items? When a shaken Barbara Gordon explains the fate of the original Joker, Terry begins to piece the twin mysteries together, culimating in a confrontation with the Joker that literally threatens the very existence of Gotham City.
- What happens when the original Batman's arch-nemesis comes back, as spry and diabolical as ever? And can the new Batman deal with him?<br/><br/>Once again, the animated Batman movies trump the live action versions (except for the first one, maybe) and this is probably because Return of the Joker is a product of a talented group doing what they ENJOY.<br/><br/>While the artwork is kept to a minimum, the plot is an engaging mystery novel and the story flows smoothly, at least in the unedited version. You just HAVE to know how the Joker came back and the ending doesn't disappoint. Also, there are several unexpected twists in the story, giving the movie atmosphere and the dialogue feels natural.<br/><br/>In addition, the voice acting is fantastic. While all of the voice actors have done a top notch job, Mark Hamill does a convincing job of voicing a character who is deranged, diabolical, AND flippant. Not exactly a small feat.<br/><br/>The only problem with this movie is that it requires some background in the animated series to get the most out of it, but even w/o, it could probably stand on its own without any problems. This may explain why the movie went straight to video, but it deserves more attention than the last three live-action movies have received, so this is unfortunate.
- I actually prefer Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker compared to the actual Batman Beyond series because this movie does what the series doesn't. We get two Batmen for the price of one. Not only does this movie resurrect the Joker (I won't reveal how he returns) , but we also finally get to find out what happened to the second Robin, Tim Drake and we catch up with him and find out what he's like as an older man. <br/><br/>My favorite part of this whole movie is when Barbara Gordon flashes back and tells Terry of the final battle with the Joker, which shows us what happened to him as well as how Tim Drake's career as Robin came to an end. No, he doesn't die, but it reminds me of the comics where the Joker killed Robin #2, Jason Todd. Seeing a new story with the original Batman, Robin, Batgirl, the Joker, and Harley Quinn is a priceless treasure. The only thing I hated was that other than a couple of mentions, we never found out what ever happened to Dick Grayson, Bruce's original partner in this series or movie, which leads me to believe that Dick is the most bitter of all. <br/><br/>In this movie, you see the Joker in a more frightening and disturbing way, his new knowledge, Terry's battles with the Joker as well as the amazing flashback story during the original Batman days. Whether you love Batman Beyond, or like me, a purist for the original Batman series, I highly recommend this DVD movie so you can see the best of both worlds.
- "Batman Beyond" takes place about 40 years after the "New Batman Adventures" series. At the time of the show's release a precise date was given as 2039. Meaning Bruce Wayne quit being Batman in 2019 (as seen in ''Rebirth''). This also means the episode, ''Epilogue'' takes place in the year 2056. Terry McGinnis himself has a given birth-date of 2023.<br/><br/> Due to a political uproar against violence in animated movies at that time Warner Bros. canceled the release and edited the movie to a version that was then released worldwide. In the beginning of 2001 the original and uncensored version was released in the USA, on top of that in Anamorphic Widescreen while earlier releases had been only presented in Fullscreen. a5c7b9f00b
