- Date Night...?
- "I can't believe I'm doing this."
- "Weiss, just shut up and smile."
- Weiss glowered at Yang so coldly that a shiver ran through the blonde girl. Yang stepped in and jabbed her girlfriend in the side with her elbow. Weiss swatted at her, then grimaced.
- This was not how their free Saturday was supposed to end up.
- They weren't in either of their own family's houses, but rather, in the house of one of Yang's distant cousins.
- And they weren't alone.
- A boy of barely four years old was already running rampant around the house, screaming and squealing in excitement without his parents there to watch him.
- The pair of teenagers had been left by the adults in front of the doorway, imprisoned in the house for the next five hours of the evening. Their faces had already turned pale, and Weiss could feel her white hair turning even more grey by the second.
- As the child's screams and blundering footsteps filled the entire household, Weiss rounded on her girlfriend.
- "Babysitting? Honestly, Yang. Why would you ever agree to this? Especially without telling me about it before picking me up?"
- "Hey, I told you eventually, right?"
- "Yes. Only after you'd driven to my house and told me we were going on an "exciting date", you idiot. You tricked me. I could walk out right now and tell you not to call me again for a week."
- "Weiss, no, c'mon pleeeeease! I need you for this!" Yang begged.
- Weiss flinched. She'd always been weak to those words. Knowing someone else was relying on her always seemed to hook her into even the stickiest of situations.
- Heaving a sigh, she lightly smacked a hand to her face.
- "Then how exactly are we supposed to do this?"
- "Relax. I've got this all under control."
- "Oh, really? Then why did you essentially kidnap me and bring me here today? If you've got it under control then I don't suppose I need to stick around, right? I'll see you next week."
- Weiss feigned a move to open the front door, but Yang jumped forward to grab her arm.
- "Okay, I take it back! I need your help. They only asked me to babysit because they assumed I'm good with kids, since I'm Ruby's big sister. I can't screw this up."
- Weiss looked her over - Yang seemed truly desperate. And Weiss could certainly understand the prospect of needing to uphold a reputation, especially for her own family members.
- She rolled her eyes, then let her hand fall away from the door.
- "Fine. But as consequence for kidnapping me tonight, you're not allowed to touch me at all until he's asleep. That's your punishment."
- Yang bit her lip, but ultimately gave in and released Weiss' arm.
- "All right. I'll try to restrain myself and keep my hands off you, but it won't be easy-"
- "Enough. No flirting. The screaming kind of kills the mood."
- "Yeah... guess you're right." Yang straightened herself up and clapped her hands. "Okay. Let's go catch him."
- The two girls headed down the hallway towards the boy's playroom. Both of them tensed when they saw the destruction that had already befallen the place.
- Toy trucks, dinosaurs, and Legos were strewn across the floor, and stuffed animals littered every inch that the first three categories didn't. The toy chest that had housed them all until now was on its side, and evidently the boy had gotten his hands on a bit of the laundry as well, because that was in shambles, too. The torn pages of coloring books lie in helpless shreds, broken crayons scattered all over the colorful carpet.
- Overall, it looked like a nursery school's playroom. The damage this single child had done within the course of five minutes was equivalent to the destruction ten kids his age could produce in half an hour.
- As Weiss and Yang surveyed the room in horror, the former gasped as she spotted the boy, scribbling on the walls. She pushed Yang in his direction, making her stumble on a discarded firetruck.
- "He's your cousin. You go get him. I'll start cleaning up."
- Yang guessed that was only fair. She hurried across the room, trying to clear a path for herself and not crush things as she went. At last, she reached him and crouched down beside him.
- "Hey, Skylar! Listen, kiddo. Mommy and Daddy said they want you to play outside. How does that sound?"
- The boy didn't even look at her. He just continued drawing.
- "No," he pouted. "Draw."
- Yang's smile twitched at the corners.
- "How... about we draw outside? On a coloring book? Where you're supposed to draw..."
- "Ripped," he said.
- "Yeah," she mumbled. "Wonder how that happened..."
- She looked over to Weiss who was already having trouble trying to collect all the bits and pieces of the shredded books. Weiss sent her a fierce glare. Get him out of here!
- Yang gulped and turned back to the boy.
- "Alrighty, Skylar, c'mon. Big Sis Yang says we're done here. You can't draw on the walls, buddy." She plucked the crayon out of his fingers and made a move to pick him up.
- But the second the crayon was out of his grasp, he started bawling. Caterwauls split the air, causing Yang to fall back at being at such close range. Weiss dropped what she was doing and stormed over.
- "Oh, for heaven's sake..." she growled at her girlfriend. Then, Weiss plastered on a convincing smile and crouched on Skylar's other side. "Skylar? Hi, sweetie. Remember me? I'm Yang's friend. Didn't she tell you about the dinosaur out back?"
- Almost instantly, he sobbing stopped. His wide green eyes stared up at her in bewilderment.
- "Dinosaur?"
- "That's right!" Weiss whispered. "But it's a really fast one, so you'd better hurry before it's gone!"
- He didn't need to know anything more than that. Skylar jumped up, grabbed Yang's hand, and was yanking her towards the doors in and instant.
- "Dinosaur!" he shouted. "Gotta see!"
- Baffled, Yang followed him, shooting Weiss an impressed look as she passed.
- So Yang took him outside for a while, trying to keep him busy tracking signs of the dinosaur. Meanwhile, Weiss cleaned up the playroom and was relieved to find that the crayon marks washed off the wall easily.
- Once she'd finished tidying up, she felt it was only fair to head outside to help Yang. The sun was setting, painting the back yard in oranges and reds. She found the two of them crouched over a patch of dirt.
- When Weiss approached, she saw there was a tiny print in it. Skylar was mumbling to himself and decided that a T-Rex had made it, though Weiss could assume it had been made by a raccoon or possum.
- Yang was clearly relieved to see her and hopped to her feet, prepared to pull Weiss into a hug until she remembered her restrictions.
- Smirking just a little bit, Weiss bent down to pick up a nearby rubber ball.
- "Oh, Skylar? Wanna play some catch?"
- Again, he jumped up instantly.
- "Yeah!"
- Weiss tossed him the ball and he fumbled to catch it, then laughed when he did. He then took aim at Yang and hurled it with all his might (which, for a four-year-old, thankfully wasn't much). But it still made Yang wheeze an "oomph!" when it hit her square in the gut.
- Chuckling thinly, she grabbed the ball and tossed it back to him.
- "Heh... cute lil' devil, isn't he?"
- "Right." Weiss reached out and wiped the dirt off Yang's shirt.
- The three of them stayed outside a while longer, tossing the ball. Weiss never went to catch it if she knew she'd only get dirty in the process, but whenever she got ahold of it, she gave it to Skylar.
- And of course, he'd chosen Yang as his favorite target.
- By the time he scampered back into the house shouting he was hungry, Yang was covered in dirt. Weiss offered to make dinner while she let her girlfriend shower.
- "Really?" Yang checked. "Think you'll be okay on your own?"
- "If I need you, I'll holler."
- So Yang thanked her as she went off to shower.
- Weiss had an easy task of preparing dinner for the boy, as it was just a container of food his mother had prepared in advance. Weiss was prepared to hold the spoon and feed it to him on his high-chair, but he didn't seem interested.
- "No!" he wailed, kicking his feet. "Airplane!"
- "Airplane? What's that supposed to mean?"
- Weiss checked the cabinets for any cup or bowl with a picture of an airplane on it, assuming he wanted to eat from that instead, but she came up empty-handed.
- Before long, the boy began to cry. Weiss did her best to hush him, but he only got louder.
- Luckily, it wasn't long before Yang hurried into the room freshly dressed, a damp towel around her shoulders.
- "What's up?"
- Weiss turned to her beseechingly.
- "He won't eat! He keeps saying 'airplane' but I don't know what that means!"
- "Oh, Weiss!" Yang went to pat her shoulder, then swiftly withdrew her hand. "Let a pro show ya how it's done."
- She took the spoon from her, and Weiss stepped back to observe. Evidently, when he'd asked for "airplane", that meant she was supposed to make ridiculous gesticulations and noises while having the spoon "fly" into his mouth.
- "How was I supposed to figure that out...?" She leaned back against the wall and ran her hands down her face.
- At the very least Yang was handling dinner now.
- When it was over, Skylar let out his first yawn. The girls perked up and quickly herded him up the stairs to get him changed into his pajamas. Yang scooped him up and put him into his bed, while Weiss turned on his dinosaur nightlight and switched off the others.
- "Mommy and Daddy'll be home soon!" Yang promised him. "Just go to sleep now, okay, buddy?"
- But of course, it wasn't that simple.
- "No!" he wailed, wrestling his blankets. "Story!"
- Yang bit back a small curse.
- "Uhhh, actually! Big Sis Weiss is gonna sing for you instead!"
- "What-?"
- "Yeah!" he cheered. "Sing song!"
- She had no other choice now.
- And so she did. Weiss chose a children's song she remembered her own mother singing for her when she was young. The words came back to her easily, and her voice breathed life into the pleasant, soothing tunes.
- Yang smiled as she listened, breaking her restraining order just a little as she wrapped an arm around Weiss' waist.
- Skylar yawned again and again, then curled up and closed his eyes.
- At last, he was quiet, and Weiss' song faded away. She sent Yang a triumphant look, and Yang gave her a thumbs up.
- Together, they tiptoed out of the room and back down the stairs, where they collapsed onto the living room couch together.
- "What a day..." Yang groaned. "But we survived!"
- "Somehow."
- "I never knew you were so good with kids, Weiss."
- "I'm not very good, really. I just guessed most of the time."
- "Well, ya guessed pretty darn well!" Yang leaned in to peck her cheek sweetly. "Sorry it wasn't exactly a super romantic date night or anything. Can I make it up to you next week?"
- Weiss pondered for a moment, then shifted a bit closer, turning to face her.
- "Why wait until next week? We've got the place to ourselves now, don't we?"
- A mischievous smirk curled Yang's lips.
- "Yes we do~"
- Reaching out, she looped both arms around Weiss' waist and back, and within seconds her hands were roaming. Weiss wrapped hers around Yang's shoulders and played through her hair.
- Their eyelids drooped, and half-lidded stares met in the dim lighting. Their breaths mingled warmly as Yang pulled her closer.
- They got so caught up in the moment they failed to hear the lock click.
- Their lips were brushing-
- "We're home!"
- The two girls ripped themselves apart and stood erect like soldiers for inspection, un-ruffling their clothes. Yang called out a sheepish report to her relatives.
- "H-Hi! Welcome back! He's in bed!"
- The adults thanked them both profusely as they walked into the house.
- Contrastingly, Weiss wasted no time in dragging Yang out the door, hissing into her ear.
- "You're taking me back to your house and we are finishing what we started."
- Five minutes later, Yang almost got a ticket for nearly running a red light along the way.
