- What would be the funniest encounter to pit against a Conner who had lost his voice
- >has to carry a notepad or Rudy/Amelia around to answer for him
- >??????
- =========
- Story takes place after The Trade-Off because we need the Nevermind family established.
- Conner doing his daily routine, involving a lot of shouting or narration. Wakes up one day ready for a new adventure but realises his throat is all shot to shit.
- Most classmates take reprieve in the quiet, some (Rudy and Hayleigh) take advantage of the opportunity and try to say things he can't refute or retort against.
- Conner goes shopping or whatever excuse has him downtown, runs into George, who's also wise to Conner's condition (either through observation or he was told by Rudy/Hayleigh). Conner's silence is consent to George inviting him over to the Neverminds for the night ("I WON'T TRY AND FORCE YOU, SON! IF YOU HAVE ANY OBJECTIONS - ANY OBJECTIONS AT ALL - JUST SAY SO. JUST VOICE AWAY. OK, GREAT! WE'LL PICK YOU UP AFTER SCHOOL!")
- Rudy and Hayleigh nostalgic to have Conner at the house, they somehow got away with walking home while Conner was trapped in George and Barbara's car. Rudy straightforwardly glad to see Conner while Hayleigh pokes fun but the facade melts quickly.
- George asking Conner to run all kinds of errands for him, leading him deeper and deeper into the supervillain side of town.
- Getting things like pipe cleaners or bone polish mostly.
- >bone polish is analogous to chocolate body paint and the kids are all horrified hearing Mom and Dad giggle about it
- >Conner trying to keep his expression as smooth as possible when George keeps talking about his bone
- >"Oh hey, you're George's kid! You're here to pick up the Bone Polish, right? Is this the right one? You'll have to tell me, on account of how I CAN'T READ!" [coughing laughter from the wheelchair-bound shopkeep]
- >Conner slamming the cash on the counter and leaving out of embarrassment, gets spotted on the street by thugs
- "Hey, it's George's kid! ....I HATE GEORGE!! AAAAAAAA"
- >Conner leaning against the Nevermind's front door exhausted. George opens it and he falls to the floor like a pancake,
- >"AH, EXCELLENT! AND ONLY SLIGHTLY DENTED! WELL, SINCE YOU'RE HERE, THE KIDS WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU AROUND FOR DINNER! HOPE YOU LIKE BAAARBEQUUUUUE!! HAHAHAHA"
- One of those TV phone-in quizzes with an answer like The Wreck of the Hesperus. Neither the parents nor their kids know the answer. Conner dials the number on the Neverminds' house phone, then scrambles to write the long answer on a notepad. He gets Rudy to give the answer over the phone, and the operator on the other hand tells him, "No coaching allowed" before hanging up. Conner responds by mashing the notepad against the receiver.
- >George is impressed Conner got the right answer so he gets the idea to have everyone play Trivial Pursuit that night
- >Ice cream van shows up
- >"DON'T WORRY, BOY! I STILL REMEMBER WHAT YOU ALWAYS USED TO ASK FOR!"
- >Conner gets an Oopsy-Poopsy FudgeyWudgey Kidz Surprize ~~Melt~~sicle
- >He doesn't remember ever ordering that
- >He offers to swap with Rudy
- >Rudy got the same thing
- George gives Conner dibs on what to have for dinner, it could be barbeque, whatever's in the fridge, takeout, etc. Conner writes down 'pizza' and gets frazzled/distraught looks from the family. He's not hep on the reason for this, but attempts to apologise and take back the idea (in notepad form) while George and Barbara try to walk back their initial reactions and allow the pizza idea. Hayleigh's face is crimson. Conner notepad-asks Rudy why pizza is verboten and Rudy simply says it's a very touchy subject. Could be the start of a running gag where pizza is misinterpreted as a touchy subject elsewhere (Amelia ordering it and trying to shoo Conner away from the office when it shows up).
- More television watching, there's a music video for The Devil Went Down To Georgia. The Neverminds are sitting on the sofa, they lean in and say "Say it..." in anticipation of a certain line in the song. "I told you once, you son of a bitch--" and the Neverminds cheer and holler at the swear being kept in. Conner is baffled but soon can't stop himself smirking.
- Conner sleeping in Rudy's bedroom since the spare bed has been kept there. Conner wakes up at his usual time (5.30 in the morning) but finds himself conflicted, trying not to wake everyone else up. He considers leaving to have breakfast at his apartment and heading to school. Walking downstairs he triggers the burglar alarm and races back upstairs before anyone wakes up; only George gets out of bed to check and disarm the alarm. Breakfast at 8.00 for the family, Conner seeming a little out of it since he's been up for 2 and a half hours already. Or alternatively there's no alarm and Conner just leaves early.
- >Parody of the chalkboard scene from Komi Can't Communicate but it's just Komi!Conner and Tadano!Amelia drawing dicks
- Instead of Amelia it's Hayleigh. If we follow off the 'Conner leaves early' branching path, both her and Conner are the first two to arrive in the classroom and they have a mostly one-sided altercation (Conner takes to using the whiteboard). Hayleigh says she saw her dad crying the night after Conner first showed up to operate the steam-shovel, which baffles Conner since he sees the man as an implacable wall off muscle and fire. Hayleigh trying to impress the importance of family and how much everyone enjoyed having Conner back for the night, but Conner just felt alienated and initially taken advantage of (the whole thing wouldn't have happened if the Neverminds didn't talk over Conner basically). He knows he's not going to get his [biological] family back, but still doesn't want to stay at the Neverminds. Even if he changed his mind, it'll be only a couple years before he turns 18 and leaves the house anyway, so what's the point? He impresses the social pyramid he sees himself at the bottom off, with the supers and Neverminds at the top and normal people somewhere in the middle. Hayleigh dismisses all these points, which causes Conner to retreat further into resentment. The Trade-Off hints at a fracture between Conner and his step-family but this comic can solidify it further. Thematically it's the polar opposite of the chalkboard scene from Komi; whereas that's about two people forming a bond and a goal to expand their friend circle, Conner is cementing the fracture between him and his step-family. The sequence can end with both characters at their desks, fuming, and then resuming other activities while trying not to let the frustration show, other characters come in and interact with Hayleigh or talk amongst themselves, etc.
