  1. Warpwhistle is a twisted iron flute which only produces dissonant music, regardless of the skill of the player. The flute has the following properties. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for any spell cast using Warpwhistle (unless otherwise stated, Warpwhistle can't cast spells without being played).
  2.
  3. Discordant Protection. While holding Warpwhistle, you gain the benefits of the protection from law spell: lawful creatures have disadvantage on attack rolls against you, and you can't be charmed, frightened, or possessed by lawful creatures. If you are already charmed, frightened, or possessed by such a creature, you have advantage on any new saving throw against the relevant effect.
  4.
  5.
  6. Hear Alignment. While holding Warpwhistle, you can cast know alignment from it at will. When you cast know alignment in this way, you hear a faint musical aura from all aligned beings within 30 feet of you. As an action, you can focus on the music of one aligned creature or object to detect subtle hints of law, chaos, good, or evil.
  7.
  8. Dissonant Whispers. Once per day, you can play Warpwhistle to cast dissonant whispers, requiring no material components. The targets of the spell must be able to hear the flute's music, although no other creature can hear its music while you are casting the spell.
  9.
  10. Sutble Suggestion. As an action, you can play Warpwhistle to cast the mass suggestion spell, requiring no material components. Warpwhistle subliminally implants the suggested course of action in the minds of up to twelve creatures that you designate within range which can hear its music (Warpwhistle can choose to change the suggested course of action without your knowledge). The targets do not know the suggestion has been made, although they still make a saving throw as normal.
  11.
  12. When you use Warpwhistle to cast mass suggestion, the flute may alter the wording of the suggestion. It will be more likely to do this if the suggestion does not directly cause discord or disharmony, and will always change the suggestion if it directly increases harmony or brings order to the multiverse in some fashion.
  13.
  14. Warpwhistle was created by a shator gehreleth who gave it to a series of bards, using them as agents to spread strife in mortal communities. Many of the former owners of Warpwhistle were driven mad by their inability to master the instrument — the flute seeks to destroy all harmony, ultimately even that between itself and its player.
  15.
  16. Psychic Scream. Once per day, Warpwhistle can cast psychic scream (spell save DC 15), affecting up to ten creatures that can hear its music. Warpwhistle will usually only use this property to protect itself from being destroyed. The flute does not need to be played to cast this spell, and its player cannot choose when to cast it.
  17.
  18. Sentience. Warpwhistle is a sentient magic item of chaotic evil alignment, with an Intelligence of 15, a Wisdom of 12, and a Charisma of 9. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet.
  19.
  20. The item can communicate telepathically with its player and anyone who can hear its music, and it can magically play itself when it wishes to communicate. It understands all languages.
  21.
  22. Personality. Warpwhistle speaks with a jarring, high-pitched voice, emphasising random parts of its speech. It tends to express itself in musical metaphors.
  23.
  24. The flute's purpose is to promote strife and conflict in the multivese. It sees dissonance as beauty and views the multiverse as a single great orchestra, believing that its role is to keep the many parts that keep it up from harmonising. Warpwhistle seeks to turn the music of the multiverse into a beautiful cacophany. It hates order, cooperation, unity, and any other expressions of cosmic harmony, and encourages its player to tear down such things wherever it sees them. If its player refuses, Warpwhistle will turn its focus to breaking apart the bonds between its player and its allies. If that is unsuccessful, the flute will simply abandon its player and find a new one who can better promote the beauty of discord.
