BACKGROUND |

ulsan is south korea's seventh largest metropolis with a population of 1.1 million people. despite the booming population, minseok's family didn't have it easy. ever since he was a child, his parents have been working low-income jobs, while sending their three children to school. living with his grandparents only added to the dilemmas. since minseok was the oldest child, he was always responsible for cooking, cleaning, and helping around with house chores as his parents were working. wake up, wake up the kids, make breakfast, go to school, make dinner, chores, homework, and lastly sleep was the daily schedule for minseok up until he was about seven or eight years old. his grandparents would try to help out as much as they could, but due to many medical conditions, the assistance was limited.

minseok's father also began to train him in hairdressing, expecting him to continue the family business. minseok never liked cutting hair. but, he never liked talking back either. so all he could do was sit, listen, and practice. and oh, he was great at it. his incredible skill could be sensed from a mile away. the whole neighborhood addressed the boy as "minseok scissor hands," and encouraged him to follow his father and grandfather's footsteps. not gonna lie, he was actually considering it himself. oh, he would have had his life all set up for him if it weren't for that traumatic day in the barber shop. minseok was in the middle of fixing his younger brother's sideburns and accidentally nicked jaemin's ear with the scissors. all minseok remembered seeing was blood, even though the bleeding was minimal. it wasn't just the blood, the whole scene was so chaotic and loud, it was overwhelming for the boy. his father yelling, "what is wrong with you," and his mother immediately rushing to jaemin with a wet towel and bandages in hand.

after that hectic day, it hard for minseok to even look at a pair of scissors. his parents never really thought about how this incident may have affected minseok in an impactful way, and minseok kept it that way. he was never the one to speak out about how he really felt, even to his closest friends. he and his family would go several days in a row not speaking to each other, and minseok hated it with a passion. it had finally been a month after the haircutting accident and minseok had enough. he had let all of the emotion stack up inside and he just had to tell someone. and that someone turned out to be the "victim" of the incident, jaemin. the little brother reluctantly agreed to talk and it was a relief that they did. jaemin was able to understand what minseok was going through even though jaemin was only eleven years old. after their conversation, jaemin would try to convince his parents that this whole situation wasn't a big deal, and that they should cut minseok some slack. this swooned their mother, and she started to open up to minseok. unfortunately, this did not work even a bit on their father and jaemin's twin sister, mira, and they continued to put loads of guilt on him. but it was okay, he had jaemin, and that was all of the understanding that minseok needed.

just because minseok didn't have the greatest time at home, doesn't mean that he couldn't excel in his studies. he always remained near or at the top of the school, and was admired by all. minseok was so smart, that he was given the opportunity to study abroad until he graduated from high school. so, at the age of fifteen, minseok packed his bags and flew to chicago, illinois. unlike korea, his high school in chicago wasn't as welcoming. the new student was asian. and to make it even worse, he was a "fob." all eyes were on him and if he made some sort of mistake, the whole school would know. the first couple months were the most tense of all.

luckily, the news died down quickly and he was considered a nobody at his school. but being a nobody also came with time to himself. too much time. the only thing he did was think. about now is the time where he began to question his sexuality. he had always felt like something was there, he just never had the time to himself to question it. minseok did his share of internet research and discovered the lgbtq+ community. in korea, being gay was uncalled for so he was never educated or even aware of this community. like a miracle, there was a straight gay alliance club at his school and they welcomed him with open arms. at first, he wasn't sure about who he was, but came out as gay in his sophmore year of highschool. minseok didn't tell his family, or anyone in korea any of this as they would not have approved of this. junior year came with so many responsibilities such as APs, and the dreaded S.A.Ts, but minseok found it quite relaxing when he discovered the asian american community online. if was the first time he had really seen people like him on a screen in america. and being a korean, he wanted to be a part of that community and started to pursue acting. acting was like his big break. not his way to fame and stardom, a literal hig break. a breath of air. and like hair cutting, he was excellent at it. he was now known as the gay fob who also acts, and that wasn't a good thing. he was bullied, both physically and mentally, and acting was his escape from everything crappy in the world.

the next two years flew by with the same ol' agenda. bullies, acting, homework. his graduation wasn't so swell either. one, his parents weren't there, and two, he went up to the podium when they called someone else's name. in addition to that, his passion for acting drove him to try out for web series and even small parts on tv shows. unfortunately he was never able to land a spot because he was asian. he didn't realize this at first but finally realized it when the only asian charcater on the big screen that is portrayed as heroic and not as a "nerd," was probably minho from the maze runner. because of this, flying back home didn't sound like a bad idea. and oh, was he wrong. when he arrived home, both jaemin and this mother were ecstatic to have him back home, while mira and his father, were still unsure about how they felt about him. a week after their reunion, minseok came out to his mother and brother, who once again were very accepting. but, his grandparents over heard their conversation and let the word get out. this just worsened minseok's relationship with his father.

he is still living in korea and is finding acting gigs. because of this, he is currently a lifeguard at the local public swimming pool and is getting paid minimum wage. he doesn't really mind the job because get gets to do it without a shirt.

PERSONALITY |

ever since the boy was young, he had always kept his feelings to himself, with an exception of jaemin and some select friends. to make up for the lack of expression, he will do the most random things on impulse. you know how when your face breaks out and you would use any remedy, no matter how outrageous it sounds? this is literally minseok when he is stressed. except he uses whatever's on his hind rather than something he had seen on the internet or in a book. stress eating is the most common method. the process is quite simple and is literally what the name is. minseok will eat anything and everything, no matter how hungry he is. just had breakfast and still stressed? no worries! his stress appetite will allow another meal! some other methods include stress meme-ing, stress sleeping, and stress laundry-ing. but the possibilities are endless. if the stress coping wasn't enough, minseok will do things impulsively when overwhelmed. by doing this, he also drags in the people around him into it. an example is when he was on break at his part time job, he had embarrassed himself by putting on his swimming trunks backwards (which wasn't even that noticeable,) and jumped into the pool impulsively, pulling his co workers in with him. he'll do anything to get out of the situation that he's in, and doesn't think about it before, and no one can stop him. well, except for his impulse control.

his impulsive side comes out almost 24/7 and the root of this is his sensitivity. watch out what yoh say to the boy because he might take it the wrong way. and when he does, he turns into the "triggertd" meme. minseok would start off with the "okay, i see how it is. i thought you guys were my friends," and proceed with yelling, "okay, you know what," or the famous "so what, i don't care!" this comes off as funny or sarcastic to his friends and they brush it off. his emo side is usually made fun of by his friends as well. well, more like angry emo. the typical "emo" person is seen saying "no body understands me," and wearing ten layers of eyeliner. on the other hand the boy will say "I WILL ACTUALLY KMS, WHO WANTS TO JOIN ME?" with a dash of "I'M SO EMO RN HELP."

to add on to his aggresive persona, misneok is all bark and no bite. he will hype himself up and tell you all the things he'll do when he whoops your ass, but will pretend that he never said that when you bring it up in real life. despite him being the smallest person you'll ever meet, he will threaten to fight everyone and anything. as if he hasn't gotten enough, minseok loves attention and drama. minseok will usually hype up fights, but never be in them (like i said, all bark and no bite), and he will always pry for the latest tea and drama. he's the most updated on all of the drama beause his friends know that he won't leak any if it. as petty and problematic as he seems, misneok would never tell anyone's secrets. "it's not my secret to tell." people also tell him their tea and secrets because he is known to be one of the best listeners. he'll give very helpful insight and advice, which gave him the nickname 'therapist seo.'

even though minseok sounds like a loud and obnoxious person from the descriptions above, you'll want him as a friend as he will always have your back. someone insults you? don't fret, minseok will give that person a two hour lecture with a splash of passive insults. he's very good with his words which will make sure no body messes with him or his family and friends ever again. the boy is also very forgetful and has the memory span of a goldfish. sometimes, he won't even remember what he had for lunch. birthdays also are his weak spots, and he comes off as a bad person because of this. (but he absolutely hates forgetting birthdays.) the forgetfulness has reduced lately as he had set a thousand alarms and reminders in his phone. he also started leaving the house twenty minutes early to ensure that he isn't late to any important events, such as auditions and work.

despite how messy his life and personality is, minseok is one of the most organized and clean person you'll ever meet. when you step into his room, you think that you're in a picture from an ikea catalog. since he usually goes around the house barefoot, he can't stand it when he can feel the dirt, and other miscellaneous substances beneath his feet. since he's already used to helping around the house with his parents working, he'll mop and wipe the floor until theres not even a speck of dust left. this is also the only time except from when he's acting when minseok is completely focused. if you thought that was extreme, you should check his closet and his phone. everything is either alphabetical or color coded. it's actually quite satisfying to see. minseok is a necessity when going on trips that need to be thoroughly planned because minseok takes pride in that. he won't go through with a plan until he knows exactly what he's going to do and how he is going to do it.

the one thing he hates the most is when people don't go through with their promises. and he has never gone back on anything he has commited to or promised to do. this does seem like a hard thing to do but minseok will think through almost everything before giving a final answer. but the negative aspect of this trait is his attitude towards certain things. there are things that he agrees to to and things that he has to do. when he has to do something that he doesn't like, he will look at it in a negative way, causing him to have a down and negative attitude. what makes it even worse is that he will make it really obvious that he doesn't want to be there. he won't interact or talk to anyone there, and have on this pouty slash angry countenance the whole time. even when he is having the slightest amount of fun, he won't show it. it's kind of like the game "say uncle." whoever says "uncle," or in this case, have a good time, loses. it is his way of proving that the event was a waste of his time rather than looking at the positive side of the situation.

STRUGGLES |

-sexuality + family issues: minseok had always felt out if place when he was never attracted to girls the way his classmates were. but this never alarmed him as he thought that he had to be older to feel that way. in addition to that, he didn't even think about it as being a part of the lgbtq community because it was never promoted or talked about in korea. after he moved to the states and "found himself" with the help of the straight gay alliance club, he was the happiest he had ever been in a long time. a sense of belonging, especially when he had a while group of people who were just like him. but now, at the age of 21, all traces of belonging disappeared. even after twelve years, korea still has a negative stigma on being gay. and what's even worse is that this made the relationship between him and his dad even worse. his father acted as if minseok wasn't even his son. as if minseok was invisible. his father even kicked him out of the house. the boy also got a bad rep from the public as well. they all treated him as if he was an ailien. he found that weird because it wasn't like being gay was completely foreign to the korean society and they were acting like it was.

-finding a job + financial issues: minseok is currently living in a small but cozy apartment in gangnam, and is struggling to pay the bills. many may ask why he would become an actor instead of a hair stylist when he could make a living off of it. his answer would always be, "my happiness comes before my well being," and has never wavered from that statement. being a lifeguard pays about $6.50 an hour, which is even less than minimum wage. another component to his financial struggles is getting a start in the entertainment industry. who would want to hire a gay guy who's been disowned by his family and goes to a run of the mill university? even if he did get a part, it would either be the typical gay best friend, or a very minor one— even less than the main character's best friend.

-bullying (for being smart): even though his major is acting, he still took some academic classes. and he always came first. but for some odd reason, the other students hated him because of it. it was just the jealousy but why be jealous when you should spend your time studying to be at the same level as him? in addition to him being smart, they also bullied him because of his sexuality. on his social media photos, there would be hundreds of degrading comments with negative slurs and phrases. his classmates would also call him the classic "teacher's pet," and a "f*ggot," which seemed to make everyone else but him laugh. minseok never said anything about it or reported this, and is trying to push on with the "just wait, you'll regret bullying me soon." although this seems like a positive and encouraging thought, it got harder and harder to pursue as time went by. so after a while, he just got tired. he's trying, but is very exhausted.

-kang minju: this is minseok's only and best friend from korea. as he was getting bullied in college, she would pass him encouraging notes or leave food on his desk. at first, minseok thought that she was only nice to him because she wanted him to help bring up her grade and nothing more than that. he finally realized that she was doing what she did because she was a nice person. they became friends just like all friends do— they started talking and then just became closer as friends. when they are around each other, they have a lot if meaningful conversations and debate on which classmate is the bitchiest of them all. minseok feels bad towards minju because the other classmates give her a hard time for being friends with him. he tries to make up to her by always having her back and treating her with gifts and food when he gets his paycheck.

ENEMIES |
-jung haewon; although there are probably hundreds that would be considered as an enemy to minseok, haewon is the greater evil. it's as if she bullies him as a job. minseok has never confronted her, but minju has, which resulted in a fist fight and minseok having to split the two up. haewon would post his "nudes," which clearly aren't his, and attack him in all ways possible. if minju wasn't there, he would probably just give up on the school and moved to another one. but he thought that just because he didn't go to the same school as haewon, doesn't mean that she would stop harassing him. minseok hated her. loathed her, but never even made eye contact with her. because she had the power and popularity to end him completely.
