More than a thousand soldiers were now lying dead on the plains behind them. After leaving the station, Tomochika had followed the tracks leading to the capital. As they traveled, soldiers wearing the same uniforms as those from the station had attacked them. Naturally, Yogiri put a stop to it, but no matter how many he killed, they just kept coming.

「ごめん。 慣れ て き た と 思っ た けど、 これ ホント どん 引き だ……」 　 見 ない よう に しよ う とは 思っ て い た が、 やはり 気 に なっ て 何度 も バックミラー を 見 て しまう。 　 そこ には、 死体 の 山 が 築か れ て い た。 『一人 殺せ ば 殺人 者、 千人 殺せ ば 英雄 とは 誰 の 言っ た 言葉 だっ た か。 それ に 則れ ば、 小僧 は 英雄 という こと に なる のか？』 　 千人 どころ では ない 数 の 兵士 たち が、 平原 に 倒れ て い た。 　 駅 を 出 た 知 千 佳 たち は、 線路 沿い に 装甲車 を 走ら せ た の だ。 　 すると、 駅 で 殺し た 兵士 と 同じ 軍服 を 着 た 者 たち が あらわれ て、 装甲車 に 攻撃 を 仕掛け て き た。 　 当然 夜霧 は 迎撃 し た の だ が、 いくら 殺し ても 次 から 次 へと 兵士 たち が あらわれる。

The entire army was mobilized in pursuit of that one vehicle. The creature was confident that they would overtake their enemies in no time. After all, the soldiers of the Argandan Empire were equipped with powerful magical weapons as well as technology that was like science fiction to this world. These had all been developed from the knowledge the Foundation Eater had acquired by devouring other worlds, making each soldier in his army a mighty hero.

But as time went by, good news failed to arrive. Tired of waiting, it used a small amount of its power to investigate the situation directly. The armored vehicle was still in flight, the soldiers of the Argandan Empire still in pursuit. Men riding horses, dragons, and even armored tanks all collided into each other or ran headlong into crystal boulders and trees without ever firing their weapons. It didn’t know what was happening, but it was clear that they were terrified.

Don’t run away. Kill them at any cost!

The Foundation Eater gave a direct order to its army. At this point, they had already deviated significantly from their normal tactics, but it didn’t bring its own power to bear against the fleeing vehicle because it was quite enjoying the fight. If it wanted to simply destroy the Kingdom of Manii, it could do so at any time. Its power as a Foundation Eater would make that an easy task, but doing it so quickly was no fun. It had no intention of losing in the end, of course, but it wanted to keep things exciting to the last.

However, even as it thought that, its soldiers continued to collapse one after another. The dragons and horses that had lost their riders milled about in confusion, the tanks that had lost their drivers crashed and went up in flames, and the bodies continued to pile up.

The Foundation Eater couldn’t figure out what was happening. It had no idea why they were all dying, but the army was at the end of its rope. In no time at all, it had lost over forty percent of its forces. They had all died following the Foundation Eater’s orders loyally until the last, but at this rate they would lose the ability to function as an army.

全軍 を もっ て その 車両 を 止める こと を 命じ た の だ。 　 そして、 それ は 直ちに 実行 さ れる だろ う と 天 盤 喰らい は 思っ て い た。 　 なにしろ、 アルガンダ 帝国 には、 この 世界 において は オーバー テクノロジー とも いえる 火器 や、 強力 な 魔法 兵器 の 類 が 大量 に 配備 さ れ て い た から だ。 　 それら は 天 盤 喰らい が、 これ までに 喰らっ て き た 世界 における 知識 から 再現 し た もの で、 ただ の 兵士 を 万夫不当 の 勇士 へと 変える もの だ。 　 だが、 いつ まで 待っ ても、 朗報 は 訪れ ない。 しびれ を 切らし た 天 盤 喰らい は、 力 の 一部 を 行使 し、 今 の 状況 を 脳裏 に 描い た。 　 装甲車 が 走り 続け て いる。 　 追いすがる のは、 配下 で ある アルガンダ 帝国 の 兵士 たち。 それぞれ が、 馬 や 竜 や 戦車 に 乗り 追いかけ て いる が、 それら は 発砲 する こと なく、 力 を 失っ て、 蛇行 し お互い に ぶつかり、 あるいは 水晶 の 岩 や 木 に 激突 し て い た の だ。 　 何 が 起こっ て いる のかは わから ない が、 兵士 たち が 恐慌 を 起こし つつ ある のは わかっ た。 『逃げる な。 なんと し ても 殺せ！』 　 直接 兵士 たち に 指示 を 出す。 　 もう この 時点 で、 通常 の 作戦 行動 からは 逸脱 し て い た が、 それでも 装甲車 に対して 自ら 力 を 揮わ なかっ た のは、 これ が まだ 娯楽 の 一部 だっ た から だ。 　 そもそも、 マニー 王国 を 滅ぼす 程度 の こと は、 やろ う と 思え ば いつ でも できる。 天 盤 喰らい として の 力 を 直接 揮え ば 容易い こと では ある の だ が、 それ を し て しまっ ては 面白く ない。 最終 的 に 負ける つもり は ない が、 それでも ギリギリ の ところ までは 過程 を 楽しみ たい と 思っ て いる の だ。 　 だが、 そんな こと を 考え て いる うち に、 兵士 たち は ばたばた と 倒れ て いっ た。 　 乗り手 を 失っ た 馬 や 竜 が 途方 に 暮れ、 歩兵 たち は 屍 を さらし、 コントロール を 失っ た 戦車 は 火の手 を 上げ て いる。 天 盤 喰らい には 意味 が わから なかっ た。 　 なぜ こんな こと に なる のかが さっぱり わから ない。 　 だが、 もう 限界 だっ た。 　 あっと言う間に 損耗 率 が 四 割 を 超え て いる。 彼ら は 天 盤 喰らい の 命令 を 忠実 に 守ろ う として、 次々 に 死ん で いっ て いる の だ が、 これ では もう まとも な 軍事行動 を する こと など でき は し ない だろ う。
