Rootspring’s gut clenched in horroras he saw her pad up to the ThunderClan cat and stand there watching, her eyes no longer narrowed.
Squirrelflight  tensed,  tossing  her  head.  “What  in  StarClan’s  name  is happening?” she demanded.
Willowshine said nothing, just went on staring at Squirrelflight out of wide, blank eyes.
Squirrelflight’s  whole  body  seemed  to  shrink  inward  in  despair. Rootspring felt devastated, too.
Does that mean Ashfur’s here? Rootspring looked around, but could see no sign of the evil tom. But I’ve hardly taken my eyes off Willowshine sincewe were captured, he told himself. So when could Ashfur have taken controlof her?
A cold feeling spread from Rootspring’s ears to the tips of his claws, as if he  were  turning  into  a  cat  made  of  ice.  He  realized  with  horror  that Willowshine must have been Ashfur’s creature from the very first, when she pulled him into the Moonpool. She had only been pretending to help him. Maybe she had even set him up to follow Mapleshade into the collapsing cave, so that the falling rocks or the fog would kill him.
No wonder she looked surprised when I turned up by the lake!
He realized too that somehow she must have been connected to the other spirit cats—that would explain how Stemleaf had been able to follow them when they were trying to escape, always turning up wherever they ran.
And that’s why she kept her eyes slitted, Rootspring thought. It wasn’t the light hurting them at all. It was so I wouldn’t see that her eyes are blank!
