- [09:40] Nabuc: Can anyone help me with my Mac OS X problem?
- [09:41] Sargun: Nabuc, describe your problem.
- [09:42] Sargun: My answer: Install Linux.
- [09:42] Sargun: ;-P
- [09:42] Sargun: Nabuc, describe your problem, and we may be able to assist you
- [09:43] Nabuc: When I go to boot I get a screen that says something like ' / mount successful but initialization failed, proceed?'
- [09:43] Nabuc: if I proceed, it boots but my display is black and white.
- [09:43] Nabuc: If I say no, the machine powers down
- [09:43] Sargun: Have you tried reinstalling?
- [09:43] elg: try doing a disk check/repair when it boots
- [09:44] elg: disk utility
- [09:44] elg: if that doesn't help, try booting off the install dvd
- [09:44] elg: if you get color then, then it's something about the os installation that got corrupted (reinstall probably). if not, it's hardware
- [09:44] elg: or grab an ubuntu disk and boot that.
- [09:45] Nabuc: lol I don't think I'd ever install linux on my mac. Linux sucks compared to OS X
- [09:45] Nabuc: I should try a disk repair, I honestly didn't think of that.
- [09:45] Nabuc: Do you think the drive is failing?
- [09:46] elg: well something is
- [09:47] elg: it might be purely software-induced corruption
- [09:47] elg: it might be failing hardware
- [09:48] Sargun: Why do you think Linux sucks compared to OS X?
- [09:48] Nabuc: This wasn't supposed to happen to ym mac :(
- [09:48] Sargun: can you boot from a rescue CD
- [09:48] Sargun: and then fsck the filesystem
- [09:48] Sargun: and/or chroot into it?
- [09:48] Nabuc: well just because linux is so much like windows
- [09:48] Sargun: How so?
- [09:49] Sargun: Seriously:?
- [09:49] Sargun: You know, because its totally closed source, and opaue.
- [09:49] Sargun: opaque.

- [09:49] Nabuc: well the whole "free software' thing is a scam
- [09:49] Nabuc: with the billions of dollars made on the back end.
- [09:50] Nabuc: unlike apple who is upfront and makes easy to use software
- [09:50] elg: not a scam. nobody is selling it as "software we don't make money on"
- [09:51] Nabuc: oh see I disagree. look at redhat
- [09:51] elg: ~lart emcnabb
- [09:51] • ibot chops emcnabb in half with a free Solaris 7 CD
- [09:51] elg: what about redhat?
- [09:51] harleypig: what about rehab?
- [09:52] elg: ~rehab harleypig
- [09:52] elg: ~rehab $harleypig is <action>sends $harlyepig back to thong school
- [09:52] ibot: okay, elg
- [09:52] Nabuc: redhat makes millions of dollars off of all those 'free software' hippies
- [09:53] elg: awesome. i can see you've got a nice open mind about this
- [09:53] elg: just for the sake of argument, let's consider that OS X is built on a very solid and old foundation of free software written by real hippies at berkeley
- [09:54] Nabuc: I wouldn't call steve jobs an berkely hippy
- [09:54] elg: i'm not talking about steve jobs
- [09:54] elg: he didn't write BSD
- [09:55] elg: (and true, not all berkeley hackers are hippies, i'm just superlativing in turn)
- [09:55] Nabuc: yeah but OSX has the adnvatange of being supported by a corporation where bug fixes are frequently and quick rather than having to wait forever for the pot smoking hippy community to fix my bugs for me
- [09:56] elg: nice illusion
- [09:56] neybar_home (n=jalance@thelances.net) joined the chat room.
- [09:56] elg: i'm an osx user (great laptop unix) and linux "hippie" (but i don't smoke pot, sorry), and i've seen linux bugs/feature requests fulfilled much faster than osx
- [09:57] elg: there are annoying osx bugs that have been unaddressed for years
- [09:57] elg: that would take some open source hippie 5 minutes to fix and submit a patch for
- [09:57] elg: if only they were open like redhat
- [09:58] neybar_home: hear! hear!
- [10:00] |phoenyx| (n=|phoenyx@ip65-44-121-9.z121-44-65.customer.algx.net) joined the chat room.
- [10:00] elg: plus, you can pay a pot-smoking hippie to fix your bugs just as easily as you can a corporation. except you can pick *any* pot-smoking hippie in a free market instead of a *single* corporation that may not care about your bug.
- [10:00] elg: they have to have money to buy pot you know
- [10:00] findlay: or even smoke pot yourself
- [10:00] Nabuc: elg you must be playing devils advocate. you can't possbily think that linux actually puts out bug fixes faster than apple
- [10:01] elg: i know so
- [10:01] findlay: haha
- [10:01] elg: and you have your head in the ipod
- [10:01] findlay: how about BIND?
- [10:02] findlay: how lond did it take ISC to patch it? If ISC hadn't patched it how long before all the major distros had their own patches?
- [10:02] findlay: and yet here is apple, not patched
- [10:02] elg: more concrete examples than I care to enumerate come to mind over the past 3 years as I've used osx as my primary os and the past 10 years with linux as my primary and/or server os
- [10:02] Nabuc: you've got to be kidding me. how on earth would i pick some open source developer to fix my bug
- [10:02] findlay: haha
- [10:02] Nabuc: how would I pay them? plus why would i pay them when apple would fix it for me for free?
- [10:02] Nabuc: take the iphone for example. they really screwed up with the 2.0 phone
- [10:02] Nabuc: because they allowed other people to start making programs for the iphone
- [10:03] Nabuc: wherease before it was all them, and much more reliable
- [10:03] • elg falls over
- [10:03] Nabuc: the new one sucks for that reason
- [10:03] Nabuc: thats a good exampel
- [10:03] neybar_home: lol
- [10:03] elg: you got me. i'm totally sold on your argument now
- [10:03] Nabuc: I knew you were playing devils advocate elg
- [10:03] neybar_home: I'm uninstall all non apple software off my computers *right* now!
- [10:03] Sargun: RHAT is amazing.
- [10:04] elg: neybar_home: don't forget mach!
- [10:04] neybar_home: good bye xchat-aqua... you've been a good friend.
- [10:04] findlay: Sargun: no it isn't. APPLE is the way of the FUTURE!
- [10:04] elg: who was it that was talking about the iphone the other day?
- [10:04] Nabuc: the only apple product that i have that isn't the best is on my windows laptop
- [10:05] elg: he should join in
- [10:05] Nabuc: itunes on the PC sucks, windows media player is much better
- [10:05] elg: but apple will fix it for free
- [10:05] Sargun: Yes, Apple!
- [10:05] neybar_home: to be fair itunes sucks on an apple too.
- [10:05] Sargun: iTunes....good?
- [10:05] Nabuc: itunes is awesome on my os x
- [10:05] unum: mplayer's the best :P
