  130. UWM was the only university having a combined degree in both Math and Computer Science as a bachelors of science. This program will uniquely allow me to immediately pursue an Education Graduate Degree and Teaching certificate after my BS, and complete these programs jointly in five years. Atop this, UWM's programs allow me to pursue an Electrical Engineering minor made possible by the cooperative relationship between the three departments handling my path (\schools of L&S, EAS, and Education).

  136. I want to teach. I've wanted to teach for the last 6 years as a result of my experiences in an overseas Military School and this university allows me to teach in fields that interest me in ways no other university can provide. I am very interested in Computer Science and teaching in this area is not easy to enter but is rapidly becoming more important in everyone's life as computers encroach in every aspect of our lives. This university has a unique degree combining my 2 interests in the Applied Math and Computer Science major. While initially this seems unrelated to teaching, it does provide me a broader overview than I could get in a dedicated math education degree. In the current job field a Computer Science teacher is not generally an entry level job, but rather math teachers are typically assigned to teach the computer courses in secondary schools. With the degree UWM offers I can become competitive for hire as a Math teacher and quickly pursue a Computer Science position allowing me to enter my dream field of Computer Science Education.

  142. The academics and environment of the university have provided a much better platform for education than a high school environment in my case. In specific in Honors Calculus we are given very few tests and large spans of time between the tests, but when these tests do arrive they cover a lot of content. This has enabled me to experiment with different styles of retaining information and lead me to a large discovery as to how I should think about studying in the future. In taking calculus I've learned much more than a subset of math, I've learned that no topic is more difficult than another and by using this mindset across many subjects I've improved my study habits and increased my ability to retain information. This course has also been beneficial in the teaching style of my professor. As a future math teacher the clarity and structure my current course follows has been insightful and I intend to draw from the style of my professor in my teaching job in the future.

  148. As a sophomore in High School I decided to spend my summer volunteering at a children's camp for five weeks. This initially sounded like a good idea but as I started working I realized that, without pay or electronics aside from those in the kitchen I worked in, I chose poorly what to do that summer. After two weeks of this, I came to the conclusion that the choice was in fact mine to decide whether to continue disliking my time there or enjoy the fun parts and force myself to have fun through the bad. This change in outlook towards life has helped me through many situations since then and given me an ability to help others in rough times. I returned to that camp as a volunteer for the rest of my high school summers and have now been accepted early as a paid counselor next year.

  154. My family has had a large impact on my path as they have taught and exposed me to different fields. In middle school my family was stationed in England and I attended a military school. Initially I disliked this and dug into learning about computers as an escape. With help from my uncle, a programmer in Silicon Valley, I learned about servers and was even able to host some servers of my own. Eventually, though, I came to realize there was a lot to learn from living in multiple locations. Atop this I found that through my education there I liked the idea of teaching. I talked with my grandpa who was a math teacher for many years and discussed the field with him and eventually decided I wanted to teach. From this I realized I wanted to teach for military schools moving around the world as a Math and Computer Science teacher stemming from my family members.

  160. I think that as a University student my main goal is to study and learn the most I can. By receiving financial aid I will be able to focus more on studies and not pursue money during this time. Any financial assistance granted to me further removes distractions and by extent enables me to focus more on my education placing greater worth on the money given to me. If I were to receive financial assistance I could further focus on my studies and retain a greater amount of the information being taught. This becomes important because in the field I intend to enter my knowledge of the subject is critical to my delivery of a good education to others.
  161.
  162. As a future educator I value others ability to learn. If I were to receive financial assistance this would reduce the economic burden on my three siblings. This would grant them the same ability I've outlined above to focus on their schooling. As the oldest sibling this is important to see that my brothers and sister following me are able to have the same opportunities I have been given.
