- The man who would become the geist Caliban was an outcast in his homeland; suffering from the condition now known as epilepsy, he was rejected by his people in his home country. As a result, he was forbidden from marriage, denied work, and driven away from shelter. He became a bitter man, forced to beg on the street, and even eventually fled far from home to start anew, hiding his medical condition from his new community.
- Finding some small measure of success, he was pleased for a time; despite this, though, he was still a profoundly unhappy man, stricken with chronic illness he struggled to hide and far from the place he knew as home despite his mistreatement. Then, the disease struck, a crushing seizure that ended in his death; bitter and angry, he clung to that rage at the disease that stole his life, even as he became more than a mere spirit.
