  10. DELTA p. 531 - Take 3 minutes to read the text
  11. main point from the reading (R0) = dog breeding is good
  12. supporting points:
  13. R2 = purebred dogs have traits good for their purpose; registries ensure purity
  14. R1/2 = breeding benefits dogs and breeders care about the welfare of their dogs
  15. R3 = popular culture promotes dog breeds and encourages responsible dog ownership
  16. Listen to the lecture and take notes.
  17. L0 = dog breeding is bad
  18. L1 = many “backyard” breeders care only about profit, not their animals’ welfare
  19. L2 = breed “purity” causes inbreeding and genetic disorders, and registries help cause this problem
  20. L3 = promoting breeds causes overpopulation of dogs and many unwanted dogs (e.g. 101 Dalmatians - many people got rid of their dogs when they grew up)
  21. ---
  22. When the points don’t match up directly, focus on the points as they’re made in the lecture.
  23. The prompt always focuses on the points from the lecture:
  24. “Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they contradict specific points made in the reading passage.”
  25. ---
  26. p. 392 - Read the text and take notes.
  27. R0 = wind power is good
  28. R1 = it’s abundand and land-efficient
  29. R2 = it’s cheap
  30. R3 = it’s safe and good for the environment
  31. If you didn’t understand any of the lecture, you can still predict some points it might make:
  32. L0 = wind power is not so good
  33. L1 = It’s not predictable or controllable or reliable
  34. L2 = more turbines have to be made and maintained, you also need to connect them to where people need power
  35. L3 = material needed, they’re dangerous for birds
  36. ---
  37. Now listen and see how you did.

  41. Introduction: State the topic and summarize R0 and L0, explaining how L0 relates to R0
  42. First point: Summarize R1 and explain L1 and how it relates
  43. Second point: Summarize R2 and explain L2 and how it relates
  44. Third point: Summarize R3 and explain L3 and how it relates
  45. ---
  46. The reading and the listening were about wind energy. The reading argues that wind energy is good because it is common, cheap, and clean. The lecture, on the other hand, argues that wind energy isn’t as great as the reading claims. The speaker addresses each of the points from the reading.
  47. First, the text states that…. However, the professor points out that... . This contradicts the point from the reading that….
  48. ---
  49. Use citation language to explain where the information comes from:

  51. If the lecture contradicts the reading, use contrast language to show that:
  52. However, On the other hand, In contrast, Despite this, Nevertheless, On the contrary
