- Yanmega (A bit of theorymoning in OO and AC. I'll edit this as I test more):
- .Bug/Flying type: Weaknesses to many common types: Ice, Electric, Fire, and Rock and Flying, all of which are seen in OU frequently.
- .Glaring Stealth Rock weakness
- .Good Sp atk, Decent Speed
- .Mediocre physical bulk and awful special bulk
- .Bug and Flying STAB has its merits
- .Decent coverage with the combination of STAB moves and a Hidden Power.
- .Two excellent Abilities: Speed Boost puts it speed up to extraordinary levels, Tinted Lens helps it deal with some coverage issues.
- .Poor bulk means it can't be switched-in easily, even without Stealth Rock
- .Advent of the Therians doesn't help since Yanmega has weaknesses to the moves they often carry.
- .Didn't get much from BW2 in terms of a movepool
- .Is always capable of dealing with the many Dark, Psychic, Grass, and Fighting types in OU
- .High-Risk, High-Reward
- [Set]
- Name: Speed Boost
- -Protect
- -Bug Buzz
- -Air Slash
- -Hidden Power Ground/Hidden Power Ice
- Item: Life Orb
- Ability: Speed Boost
- Nature: Modest/Timid
- EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
- Description:
- .With Speed Boost, you can quickly be able to outpace the entire unboosted meta, and even many scarfed mons, and proceed to blast them away with decent coverage, good Special Attack, and Life Orb.
- .Protect gives a free Speed Boost.
- .Bug Buzz is a STAB move which is quite powerful. Completely destroys many Psychic and Dark types
- .Air Slash is another STAB move. Hits the Fighting types, Poison types, Fire Types, and oppposing Bug types that Bug Buzz can't hit hard enough.
- .Hidden Power Ground gives key coverage against Heatran, who otherwise becomes a hard counter for Yanmega. Also allows you to hit Steel types and Terrakion.
- .Hidden Power Fire hits Skarm, Scizor, Forretress, and Ferrothorn for super effective damage. Skarmory in particular walls this set without Hidden Power Fire. Be cautious of the rain that is prevalent in OU.
- Additional Comments:
- .Life Orb gives you the power you need to deal good damage. Yanmega's bulk is rather poor so the loss of health doesn't matter
- .Speed Boost lets you sweep through the team with blazing speed.
- .Modest is the preferred nature so you can get as much power as possible, though Timid is an option if you need some speed to start out so you can outspeed some more Pokemon when you first start out.
- .The EVs are straightforward: This set is more of a sweeping set so it is important to get as much speed and special attack as possible. The last 4 EVs are put in Def so Yanmega can switch in twice if Stealth Rocks are up and you lack a spinner.
- .Another coverage move can be used in place of Protect if you so choose. If you choose do this, Giga Drain is probably your best option, since it can improve Yanmega's longevity and help deal with the Water types often seen in the metagame. Not recommended, however, due to Protect giving you a free boost no matter what, and because they don't give enough coverage to justify something is critical as Protect.
- .Other Hidden Powers. Electric hits Skarm, Water types, and some Flying types, but the STAB moves usually do enough damage already that it's unneeded. Ice allows for more damage on Dragons as well as the Therians. However, it doesn't do enough damage to justify use over coverage moves that let Mega get past some walls.
- .You MUST have a spinner. Don't even think about not having one. Good choices include Starmie, who can beat Fire types, Dragon types, and Flying types, and Donphan.
- .Something that can crush special walls like Blissey, Chansey, and Heatran also help. Terrakion is a good choice for these three, and has some good type synergy with Yanmega: Terrakion and take the Fire and Rock moves aimed at Yanmega with not much trouble while Yanmega, in turn, can take the Ground, Fighting, and Grass moves aimed at Terrakion relatively easily, despite Yanmega's pitful bulk.
- [Set]
- Name: Choice Specs
- -Bug Buzz
- -Air Slash
- -Hidden Power Ground
- -U-Turn
- Item: Choice Specs
- Ability: Tinted Lens
- Nature: Modest
- evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
- Description:
- .Trades Speed for the ability to punch some huge holes and help with some coverage issues.
- .Bug Buzz is the main STAB move. Can ignore resists to deal massive damage to mons like the Therians
- .Air Slash is another STAB move. Also ignores resists
- .Hidden Power Ground provides the same coverage from before. Other Hidden Powers are not needed due to a combination of Specs and Tinted Lens, meaning Pokemon like Skarmory are no longer a huge threat.
- .U-Turn allows for scouting switches
- Additional Comments:
- .Because Tinted Lens means Yanmega really doesn't need to switch moves, Choice Specs are chosen for maximum power and bulk.
- .The Modest nature is chosen here for maximum power, and Yanmega really doesn't need to be fast for this set to work.
- .Yanmega's poor bulk means it's not worth investing in, so this yet uses the same EV spread as the Speed Boost set.
- .Coverage moves mentioned earlier could be used in place of U-Turn. They don't see as much use now thanks to Tinted Lens dealing with resistances.
- .Again, you MUST have a spinner. Don't even think about not having one. Good choices include Starmie, who can beat Fire types, Dragon types, and Flying types, and Donphan.
- .Also again, something that can crush special walls like Blissey, Chansey, and Heatran also help. Terrakion is a good choice for these three, and has some good type synergy: Terrakion and take the Fire and Rock moves aimed at Yanmega with not much trouble while Yanmega, in turn, can take the Ground, Fighting, and Grass moves aimed at Terrakion relatively easily, despite Yanmega's pitful bulk.
- Other Options:
- .Speed Boost on the Specs Set (If you wish to trade the ability to ignore resisted hits for the ability to outspeed many mons. Life Orb is still the best item for a Speed Boost set)
- .Yanmega, as mentioned before, has other coverage moves like Psychic, Shadow Ball, and Giga Drain. None of them are really that good in coverage or power to be worth using, though Giga Drain gives coverage against Water types and increases health, and they are also difficult to find a slot for in the sets.
- .Roost (Yanmega will rarely get an opportunity to use it and can't fit it in its limited moveset. Giga Drain is better)
- .If you REALLY want to use Roost, Yanmega is capable of running a Sub-Roost set thanks to fantastic speed from Speed Boost and decent attacking stats, though it suffers from Mega's mediocre physical bulk and bad special bulk. In addition, if it wants to attempt to fix its mediocre bulk with items such as leftovers and defensive EV investment, its attacks will have to be much weaker.
- .Yanmega got Frisk in the Dream World, becoming arguably the best Pokemon with this ability. Frisk allows Yanmega to run an interesting scouting set, similar to the Speed Boost set except with Frisk instead of Speed Boost and Choice Scarf instead of Life Orb, trading power and long-term for being able to potentially know your foes set and instant speed. Unfortunately, you'll probably find out what item a Pokemon is carrying regardless, if you're knowledgeable on sets and how items work. Plus, Mega would much rather use Tinted Lens or Speed Boost.
- .Yanmega has some support moves like Tailwind, Hypnosis, and Whirlwind, which could work alongside Frisk. However, they each have some flaws. Tailwind gives Mega speed it shouldn't need and only lasts a few turns, Hypnosis is inaccurate, and Whirlwind has negative priority. Top that with Mega's poor bulk and his use as a supporter gets squashed.
- .Yanmega's physical movepool is garbage. The best STAB moves it gets are Aerial Ace and Bug Bite, and its "coverage" moves include moves like Steel Wing, Reversal, Pursuit, and Night Slash. You know a Pokemon has a crap physical movepool if Return does more damage than its best physical STAB moves. Combined with a Base 75 Attack stat, such an idea quickly flies out the window.
- Checks/Counters:
- .Anything specially defensive that isn't weak to most of Mega's attacks.
- .Chansey, Blissey and, to an extent, Jellicent can tank any and all of Mega's attacks.
- .Skarmory and Specially Defensive Heatran resist most of Mega's other common attacks, and can KO Mega with Brave Bird and Lava Plume respectively. They both must be wary of HP Fire and HP Ground respectively however.
- .Stealth Rock seriously hurts Mega's lifespan, especially Life Orb ones
- .Priority moves don't always outright KO Speed Boost Mega, but it often severly cripples him, so repeated use of priority will take him down.
- .You could potentially stall out a LO Mega with correct prediction
- .Revenge Killing
- .Outspeed him and crush him with faster attacker. Do this before he gets a lot of boosts in the Speed Boost set.
- .Learn his coverage moves and use a Pokemon not weak to his moves to beat him.
