Magic and Behemoths

Behemoths are a family of animals all on their own. They are differentiated from normal animals by their uncanny level of intelligence, innate abilities that humans can only fully replicate with Kintite, and a tendency to seek out human settlements to prey on. Behemoths are all carnivores- while all of them can survive on the meat of normal prey animals in their own habitats, it had been observed that a Behemoth that has eaten human flesh will usually refuse to hunt "lesser" creatures for a while, but can go for much longer without eating- the biological mechanism behind this is unknown. As far as most people are concerned, the important part is the Behemoths seek out humans to eat, and so everyone must be prepared.
    In recent years, a movement has risen that asks the general population to "forgive" the behemoths, in a sense. The reasoning is that Behemoths are not actively malicious, but are fellow living things, with a surprising amount of intelligence, who are simply trying to survive- just like the humans that fend against them. The movement petitions for defenses that are non-lethal to Behemoths, and many speculate that if a Behemoth was raised from birth and never got a taste of human flesh, it would be possible to tame them.

The PKF has assembled a system to classify Behemoths based on their habitat and threat level.
Behemoths can be
- Arial
- Aquatic
- Subterranen
- Arctic
- Desert
- Forest
The threat levels go from 1-5, with 1 being "pests" that can be taken care of by local militias, 2 being more dangerous creatures that require a more organized effort to defeat, 3 being behemoths that almost certainly require PKF intervention, and 4 being the most dangerous kinds of behemoths there are. Level 5 is reserved for behemoths called legendary- they don't seem to belong to any other grouping of Behemoth yet discovered, and are also incredibly dangerous. The leviathan, for which the era was named after, was a legendary behemoth, and was rumored to level cities and contribute to the fall of the old empire. It took years to finally kill it.


What is essentially called magic in this world is energy in its purest form. This energy can be controlled with ones mind but requires extensive training. And this energy doesn't just come from thin air. It comes from a kind of crystal, called Kintite, that is mined in the wilderness and Qinae. These crystals can also be used to power different kinds of devices and are often used in guns to shoot powerful projectiles.
    Kintite's ability to power can be measured in a rudimentary way with a two-pronged tuning fork. From what's been studied, the power of Kintite is connected to its ability to echo and distort certain sounds- usually quiet and low-pitched- but isn't the actual source of power, which is likely something about the chemical makeup of the crystals. Kintite can also be cut to fit different types of devices better than it would uncut.
