Life After Death:

Aki doesn't have that much memory about his past life before going to Soul Society. He has one day woke up in a forest, alone and with no clue where he was and how he got there.
He was laying there on the rough dull grass with dried blood on his head. It was the first memory in his mind, coming to Soul Society in such state.

He wondered all alone in the world he has began to know about. He's a lost soul, perhaps.
Surviving was his first instinct into getting by and living.
