  2. General Rules
  3. Spoiler: GENERAL RULES
  4. A small collection of the essentials. Some of these might change to the discretion of a superadmin +
  5. First and foremost, if you find yourself in a situation that, should you have been a regular player, cannot be solved without admin intervention, call a third party admin to your location and let them sort it out. This can vary from authorizations, disputes but also things such as parkouring. This is to prevent abuse and misinformation.
  6. Never lose your cool, not on the server nor on the forums. As administration, you can expect to get a lot of flak. Don't let it get to you. If you feel like you need a break, pull out of the situation.
  7. Staff on staff disputes are to be handled by myself and/or one of my co head administrators. In dire situations, super administrators might revoke the staff powers of those below them, but only if it is an emergency.
  8. Fucking around is to be done far away from roleplay areas, and preferebly not at all. If you fail to clean up, you will get punished.
  9. Needless to say, all the other rules for players count for you as well.
  10. Always specify your ban reasons with the format of [Reason 1 | Reason 2 | Reason 3 | ~ Staff name]
  11. I expect mutual respect between my staff members. If you're a dick, you're out.
  12. Might add onto this in the future.
  13.
  14. Banning
  15. Spoiler: BANNING
  16. This is the usual usage of Admin banning for City RP. What punishments/for what violations, essentially. Note that this doesn't necessarily apply as a rule, just as a general outline.
  17.
  18. Note that you should put your name on a ban in order for appeals to be made. (Reason 1 | Reason 2 | ~Staff name)

  48. Mediating 101
  49. Spoiler: MEDIATING
  50. Mediating a conflict, roleplay related or not, is probably the most challenging part of being a staff member. To put it bluntly, full satisfaction from all parties in a situation like that is /very/ rare. One shouldn't expect oneself to be an expert on the subject immediately for mediating is a learning experience. To make everyone's job a little easier, however, I wrote up this small guide. There are a few key aspects one need to keep in mind when dealing with a conflict.
  51.
  52. - Rationality
  53. This is the first step you need to undertake if you are about to deal with a situation. Ask yourself the following questions:
  54. Am I in the proper (emotional/physical) state to deal with this right now?
  55. Do I /want/ to deal with this right now?
  56. Can I muster up enough time and effort to come to a reasonable verdict?
  57. Does this case suit my experience?
  58. If you answered 'no' to any of the following questions, it is crucial you either delay settling the situation or give it over to another staff member. A lot of drama is caused by the fact that some verdicts are made based on impulse, annoyance or anger. If the situation at hand is somewhat complicated while you are completely new to dealing with teenagers, it's also best to let one of your fellow admins handle it.
  59.
  60. - Bias
  61. After making sure you are actually capable of dealing with conflicts, you must make sure you have no benefit in whatever verdict you might take. Bias is an odd thing, something occurs both in video game servers and real life as well, and oft people make decision because they (subconsciously) have something to gain or favor to win. Another set of questions:
  62. Am I befriended with one or more parties in the conflict?
  63. Am I on bad terms with one or more parties in the conflict?
  64. Do I, my roleplaying group or my faction have something to gain from a favorable verdict on my end?
  65. Answering 'yes' to any of the above questions means it's usually a good plan to give the case over to someone else. Keep in mind that in some situations this is not possible; you are the only staff member on or the other staff members on duty also have a potential of meeting their own agendas in this situation. You are expected to distance yourself from the parties entirely if that's the case and do your best anyway.
  66.
  67. - Order
  68. Especially in video games people tend to be incredibly blunt or angry when things don't go their way. Crucial is that you make sure all parties involved are somewhat calm and willing to listen to one-another; only a fool tries to reason with someone who isn't in their right mind. Delaying the verdict is an option if your efforts to calm everyone down is fruitless. Be wary that that on its brings a list of risks with it, however.
  69.
  70. - Information
  71. Misinformation is also a huge cause for shitstorms and community conflict. What you want to do here is split the step into four phases.
  72. Let one party tell their side of the story while the other remains silent.
  73. Cross-reference their story with logs, witnesses or other tools at your disposal.
  74. Let the other party tell their side of the story while the other remains silent.
  75. Cross-reference again.
  76. In some cases, the conflict ends here. One party was not aware of the actions of another, for example, and will vote to disregard the sit altogether.
  77.
  78. - Discussion
  79. Once all the information is gathered (I usually stick with the who, when, why, how list) it's time for the debate. This is by far the most tricky of steps for the situation can easily unraffle into a giant shitstorm if you don't play your cards right. A few important things to keep in mind:
  80. Be polite. - This will ease some of the tensions. Ensure all parties remain somewhat civilized.
  81. Be understanding. - There are a lot of situations someone might lose something they worked hard for. Be mindful of this and react accordingly. Empathy has many benefits.
  82. Look to make compromises if possible. - This should be taken with a grain of salt. If all parties are happy; good, great. Often this will not be the case, however. See the next step.
  83. Be firm. - You can sit there and argue balistics or physics for hour after hour. At one point you need to step in, slam your foot to the ground and say "We're going to do this my way." It might seem a bit redundant but players are often inconsiderate and selfish, thus willing to argue for a long while until they get their wishes.
  84. Accept help. - This I see most of you do anyway. Ask your fellow staff members for advice and opinions.
  85. - Aftermath
  86. Close the discussion by giving your verdict and the reasoning behind it. Leave it at that. This is also one of the harder steps for in most cases you will leave someone dissatisfied. Assure them that you understand but that your mind is made. Refer them to the forums if they wish to keep the debate going. You as an admin might get some flak from (multiple) parties for your verdict even if it's a just as can be. People are never satisfied and will continue to bitch and moan if things don't go their. Let them. You did what you could. Keep in mind we're dealing with hormone-filled teenagers here; giving in to unreasonable demands is not our job.
  87. Questions, comments and contributions are welcome.
  88.
  89. The Watchlist
  90. Spoiler: WATCHLIST
  91. The watch list is, as the name suggests, a list where we document certain individuals who have proven to be problematic. Bad behavior, bug exploiting, shady actions and general rulebreaking are all grounds for putting someone on the watchlist.
  92.
  93. Keep in mind that only Maroon may add someone to the list. If you think someone needs to be added, post the individual's name and the reason for wanting to add him in the watchlist thread. Generally speaking we I want evidence in the form of logs and/or screenshots to go with the report.
  94.
  95. If someone is on the watchlist and they break a rule, ban them for the specified duration specified in the thread. Make sure you also post that you banned said individual and for what reason.
  96.
  97. Staff recommendations
  98. Spoiler: RECOMMENDATIONS
  99. If you feel like you've spotted someone who might be an addition to our team, feel free to recommend them! At times, I might ask you to focus on keeping an eye out for new people we can make staff. The things you should be looking for then are:
  100. Maturity.
  101. Activity.
  102. Willingness to help.
  103. General behavior.
  104. Current rank in any of the non-Citizen factions.
  105. Time they have spend on our server.
  106. Once you found someone who has passed the abovementioned criteria, feel free to recommend them in the thread.
