- Applebloom was sad. Granny Smith had been dead for a year, and now it was just her and her big brother and sister... and she was now the oldest pony around without a cutie mark. Old enough to be working on the farm, but... she just felt like some important thing was missing. Something she didn't know.
- When Applejack was alone in the kitchen, baking the goods for the week, Applebloom stayed inside for a change, and helped. Big Mac didn't mind doing the heavy chores himself anyway.
- She began asking how her sister and her friends were doing, and talked a little about how Scootaloo was engaged now and Pinkie said Sweetiebell was basically taking her old job in the shop... and how Twist and Sweetie kept fighting over the recipe for various sweets.
- Then the moment came, Applebloom took a deep breath and asked about their mother. Applejack froze up at first, and stated the old story... she'd died, and she loved them all very much... it was the end part that always sounded odd. AJ would say she was watching over her and proud of her, but it always felt like there was a slight problem with how she said it.
- She pushed harder, and AJ predictably lost her temper, insisting she go help Big Mac. After a moment of staring at each other defiantly, Applebloom put her foot down. This time she wanted to know the truth.
- "AJ, it's time we told her, she deserves to know." Big Mac calmly stated, apparently sneaking in quietly behind her at some point... Applebloom was beginning to wish he hadn't finally got around to oiling the door hinge.
- "Fine..." AJ sat Applebloom down and sat across from her, looking like she was going to confess to war crimes, "D... did you ever wonder why Big Mac and I share a room, even though we're brother and sister..."
- Applebloom stared blankly at the two of them for a good minute, not saying anything.
- "I... I understand if you hate me sugarcube, I ain't askin' ya to call me Mamma or anything..." AJ had turned slightly blue "I mean, we knew it was wrong, but we stayed on the farm all the time and..."
- It was Big Mac's turn to speak "truthfully, we're half brother and sister anyway, Granny Smith cheated on Pop years before he died, she only told us after that. Plus we barely knew each other"
- AJ nodded insistently, "It's true, Big Macintosh went away when we were both just foals... somebody had to learn mechanics and stuff to fix the tractors so... when he came back... it was like we'd never met..."
- Big Mac sighed and nodded, "A'yup. Must've been close to 8 years..."
- Applebloom continued to stare blankly... "D... does this mean I'm gunna get sick or something?! I mean, you can't do that with family, can ya?"
- "You should be ok sugar cube, just don't marry your cousin" AJ joked, immediately regretting it "Sorry... but yeah, the doctor said you should be ok. Granny Smith insisted we call you our little sis..."
- Big Mac frowned, nodding "I wanted to tell ya, but we worried how the town would treat ya"
- Applebloom was a wash of emotions. She stammered "I got a mamma and a pappa... and they're alive..."
- For some time, Applebloom continued to stammer over and over "I got a mamma and a pappa... and they're alive!"
- Big Macintosh moved closer to AJ, and they both looked into Applebloom's eyes.
- "Sugar cube? You ok?" AJ bit her lip, turning slightly blue again "Yeah, we're alive sugar... I'm sorry we didn't tell you.. and..."
- And apparently Applebloom had finally snapped out of it, the stammering switched to a list of things she'd spent her childhood wanting to do with her parents...
- How now she had a mother to talk about boys with, and a father to give her away at her wedding, and on and on the list went... faster and faster...
- The two adult ponies somewhat stunned, as the list culminated in a waterfall of tears and one last list item...
- "And I don't gotta pray to tell my parents I love them..." she stammered... shaking...
- AJ turned almost purple, and smiled. Tears ran down her cheeks... "T... that's true sugar cube... we... we love you too. I've always been proud of ya..."
- "We can tell 'em I was adopted" Big Mac was thinking out loud... his face deadly serious "Granny Smith ain't around to get upset anymore. Then you can tell people. We can be a family"
- AJ nodded. "Y... you sure big broth... heh..." blushing again."I guess I shouldn't call ya that now"
- Big Mac did his traditional "A'yup"
- Both ponies suddenly paused. Applebloom was hugging them tightly... her tears flowed like a river.
- The next day they would tell the townsfolk that Big Mac was adopted, and say they lied out of fear ponies would think it odd, as he was her adopted brother.
- Applebloom got her cutie mark that night. It was an apple half with a few small red apples around it. It would always remind her of her mother and father, whom were so close to her but she never knew.
