- IRL:
- I want to start here this time, rather than do all my gaming achievements first. Obviously, my biggest accomplishment of 2024 was beginning my first ever serious relationship with another woman. As of writing this, we are nearly 4 months strong and have been doing really well. We've made a lot of great memories together and I look forward to what the upcoming year has in store for us.
- A few other things that happened to me this year:
- - I watched the Chiefs clutch out yet another Super Bowl win (#ChiefsKingdom). Who knows, maybe the threepeat will happen in 2025? Hard to say, but it's a possibility. In general, I've gotten a bit more into football this year, though that's mostly because the rest of my family is really (and I mean, REALLY) into it, so I kinda had to.
- - I attended SGDQ 2024, and while I didn't get a run in, I certainly enjoyed myself a lot more than I did the previous year. I met a lot of cool people and overall had a great time. (Still not promising anything for next SGDQ, but I'll try.)
- - My job situation has changed a little bit. I'm still working at the same place, but starting around April, I started getting scheduled less and less in my old department (I'm working part-time, and while I offered 20-25 hours a week, I was getting one shift per week if that), and eventually had to be moved to another department midway through the summer. It's been an adjustment for me, but I'm getting the hang of it.
- - In March, I attended a wedding between two high school friends of mine... but then they got divorced just a few months later, so that's kind of a bummer. Still worth mentioning here, though. (I'm still on good terms with both of them, at least for now.)
- - Almost all of my friendships have remained intact, and I've even formed a couple of new friendships along the way.
- As far as my mental health goes, it's been up and down. The middle of the year was quite difficult, first with there being a few months where I literally didn't work at all because they didn't have any hours for me, and then adjusting to a new department that's a bit more mentally demanding than my old one. There's also been the usual influx of world events, personal issues at home that I'm definitely not getting into here, and mistakes that I've made that have gotten to me. In general, though, I'm noticing that I've gotten a lot better at handling the most severe of mental struggles. I've had my fair share of meltdowns and breakdowns, but I'm beginning to recognize that those feelings are only temporary, and I just need to let them fizzle out. I've also continued to improve in how I reach out to people. Recently, I finally admitted to myself that I haven't been genuine in my faith, and that's something I definitely want to continue working on next year. I will also mention that having a girlfriend has definitely helped me in a lot of areas; she's given me additional motivation to keep improving myself and being the best person I can be for her.
- (Also, I basically did jack shit in terms of writing this year. I swear, I'll figure out how to make time for it eventually.)
- My goals for next year:
- - Commit to documenting my progress in mental health and spiritual growth
- - Commit to learning to drive
- - Continue working, and hopefully have enough in my savings to go back to school in the fall
- - Actually give myself a quota to get writing done (I've found that going to a place like the library helps a lot, but the closest library is a 25 minute walk from my house and I'm rarely able to get a ride there)
- - Be the best boyfriend I can be
- So, while not a whole lot has happened this year, I'm confident in saying I've made at least a little progress. It's all about those baby steps, after all (or so I've been told).
- Gaming:
- While I certainly didn't meet all the goals I set for myself in speedrunning this year, I've definitely met a lot of them. Instead of giving a detailed analysis, I'll just rapid-fire through my achievements this year:
- - SMG2 any% - 2:59:12 -> 2:58:55 (albeit through extremely unorthodox means)
- - SMG2 242 star - 9:22:02 -> 9:19:25
- - 3D Mario 246 - 8:22:40 -> 8:01:34
- - SM64: The Green Stars 130 star - 2:25:07 -> 2:22:17
- - SM64 Shining Stars 151 star - 2:49:35 -> 2:42:01
- - SM64 Shining Stars 0 star - 6:40 -> 6:27
- - SM64 Randomizer 120 Star - I forgot -> 2:21:40
- - SM64 Randomizer 120 Star (Non-Stop) - I forgot -> 1:27:37
- - SM74 110 star - 1:14:49 -> 1:14:26 (this was a surprising one that came out of nowhere)
- - Rhythm Heaven Fever All Medals - nothing -> 1:52:41
- - Star Revenge 6 120 star - nothing -> 2:33:46
- - Star Revenge 6.5 70 star - nothing -> 59:57
- I hardly played Pac 'n Roll Remix or vanilla SM64 at all this year, aside from a couple of events and SGDQ. Rather than set goals for myself that I probably won't meet, rather I want to focus on one thing at a time and move on to the next goal once I'm satisfied with my progress.
- For starters, my main focus going into 2025 will be SMG2 any%, with the hopes of getting Nemi bop (though not really since I'm using JPVC and Co-Star strats). I've had some crazy pacers already in the past couple of months, so my hope is that it shouldn't take too long to meet that goal. Afterwards, I'd like to return to PnRR any% and get the long overdue 21:xx, since at this point it's been well over 3 years since my last record in that. Interspersed in all of that, I'd also like to continue running Star Revenge 6 120 star to get a PB that I'm content with, and maybe throw in some other ROM hacks if time permits. I'm also hoping to improve in some of the other SMG2 categories, namely Any% Restricted Bank and 242 star. I really don't have any plans for vanilla SM64 at this point, but there's a slim chance I'll come back to that game at some point in the future. SMG1 and SMS are also solid maybes, but I also don't have any serious plans for those two games as of now. I'm not sure how much I'll be streaming, since I've found that doing offline, locally recorded runs is a bit more relaxing for me. I've basically given up on growing my stream anyways, so we'll just have to see how I feel.
- Additionally, for next SGDQ I plan on submitting PnRR any% and Rhythm Heaven Fever All Medals blindfolded. Not sure how much of a chance either of those games have, but we can always hope.
- As for other gaming achievements:
- - By far the most noteworthy is my newest hyperfixation, the Rhythm Heaven franchise. I was introduced to it last year through a couple of LaserTrap's piano covers, and after researching the games a little bit and learning more about them, I tried Rhythm Heaven DS for the first time at the start of this year. I immediately fell in love with the game, and have since fully completed that, Fever, and Tengoku (whether or not I'll ever play Megamix is still in a serious grey area). I've also formed a new hobby of making Rhythm Heaven custom remixes, and in fact that's probably what I've spent the most amount of my free time working on this year.
- - In April, I completed my Gradius 22-game 1-ALL challenge that I set for myself last year. I just randomly decided to attempt in on a whim one day, and managed to see it through. Gradius' 40th anniversary is in 2025, so there's a good chance I'll go for the repeat then as well. I've also set a couple new high scores in some games, namely the SNES version of Parodius Da! and Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius on PS1 (the latter of which being my first time ever scoring 10 million points in any game).
- - My gaming collection has expanded even further. There's the three aforementioned Rhythm Heaven games I've acquired, and with my new Japanese PS1, I've taken it upon myself to add Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius, Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus, Namco Museum Encore, and Sexy Parodius to my Konami and Namco collections. In fact, at this point there's not really any games I'm interested in buying at the moment, because of everything that I've gotten in the past two years.
- - I've done a plethora of marathon runs, almost of them for RGLtv's various events. I won't go over all of them here, but the only unsuccessful one was a 1CC attempt of Nemesis 3 for Retrothon 2024 (Gradius syndrome is fun y'all); luckily I was able to redeem myself at the next event.
- Some other gaming things I'd like to do next year:
- - Actually play through some of the games I've bought, namely Pac-Man World, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Super Mario 3D World. Don't count on me learning to speedrun any of them.
- - Continue making Rhythm Heaven custom remixes
- - Get better at Sexy Parodius, now that I have a convenient way of playing and recording it
- Conclusion:
- Buy and large, it's been an interesting year. As usual, I didn't accomplish everything I set out to, but a lot of unexpected things happened this year, most of them good. I don't want to set my hopes too high for 2025, but I'll at least say if things keep going the way they are, I should be alright.
- Y'all have been awesome this year. Have a great New Year and stay safe, everyone. :)
