  2. I have recently noticed that companies like Godaddy are allowing to enter unregistered nameservers as the nameservers of domains if there is a Host record created in the DNS. For example, if I have a domain named xyz.com, I can use the nameservers ns1.xyz.com and ns2.xyz.com for the domain even though the child nameservers for ns1.xyz.com and ns2.xyz.com are not registered. I can simply create 'A' records for ns1.xyz.com and ns2.xyz.com with the IP address used in the DNS server and can use them as nameservers for the domain without registering a child nameserver. AFAIK, it was not allowed earlier. Has there be any changes in ICANN rules and DNS RFQs allowing such a practice? Is it a valid practice?

  19. Don't think RFCs have changed for that and having ns within the same domain without glue wont work because how is the nameserver IP found to connect to? Doing this with a different domain though "works" but requires additional lookups.

  21. Perhaps godaddy is registering the nameservers for you while adding in the nameserver to the domain?
  22. ICANN rules and DNS RFQs are unchanged, domain will not function unless the child nameservers / ns are registered from domain end, in case of godday they may registered your nameservers when are putting these two nameservers in NS fields.
  23. I have tested by adding non-existent nameservers of same zone and cross zone. Let me given an example.

  25. I have a domain name called domain.com. I have not created any child nameserver on the domain. If I use ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com, I cannot since it is not registered and is the same zone i.e., .com

  36. I have another domain called domain.in. Again I use ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com without registering the child nameservers. Now I am able to use it since they both are cross zones. The domain's tld is .in and the nameservers are of .com. For this I simply need to create 'A' records of ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com in the DNS server of domain.com. Even a DNS check does not throw any error or warning.
