  2.
  3. >You walked into the apartment.
  4. >The heavy door creaked like always when you leaned into it, pushing it open with a shoulder.
  5. >You stood at the entrance to the living room in a trance.
  6. >The awkwardness of the action didn’t register.
  7. >Your roommate sat on the couch, head hunched over and hugging her legs tight against her ample chest.
  8. >She stared unmoving at her laptop on the coffee table.
  9. >If she realized you came home, she didn’t acknowledge it.
  10. >The off-white wolf wore a pink sweater two sizes too large for her.
  11. >A birthday gift from an overweight aunt with no understanding of clothes sizes for petite women.
  12. >At the party, you joked she’d grow into it.
  13. >Little did they know…
  14. >You thought you’d seen the last of that shirt this morning.
  15. >As you left for work, she told you her plans to return it at the mall.
  16. >You opened your mouth to ask what was wrong.
  17. >She beat you to it.
  18. >”Are you okay?”
  19. >Only her blue eyes had moved to focus on you.
  20. >She looked about to cry.
  21. >She tried hiding it with a forced smile.
  22. >You did the same.
  23. >”You’re home early.” She noted.
  24. >You wanted to respond. You opened your mouth to answer her but the words couldn’t leave your throat.
  25. >You swallowed hard, choking down your emotions and nodded.
  26. “I, uh…”
  27. >You lifted up the plastic bag in your right hand and pointed at it.
  28. “I got subs.”
  29. >You hobbled to the couch.
  30. >The fake smile on her muzzle disappeared as she forgot to hold it.
  31. >Yours did too.
  32. >Neither of you could hide something from the other.
  33. >She groaned as she stretched her legs off the couch.
  34. >Sounded like she hadn’t moved for some time.
  35. >Stiff joints popped as she planted her paw pads on the ground and sat upright.
  36. >Too upright.
  37. >The pose was unnatural. She didn’t use the backrest of the couch.
  38. >Like her smile, she didn’t hold the pose for long.
  39. >You pulled your roommate’s sandwich out, handing it to her.
  40. “Tried calling to see what you wanted, but, uh…”
  41. “Kept going to voicemail, so I got your usual.”
  42. >”Yeah…” She muttered, grabbing the sandwich and fiddling with the wrapping.
  43. >You pulled your sub out of the baggie, and let the plastic slowly fall to the floor.
  44. >Your stomach gurgled, but you couldn’t find the strength to take a bite.
  45. >It hurt too much.
  46. >You set the unwrapped sandwich next to your friend’s superheroine outfit on the coffee table.
  47. >The two of you sat in silence, neither of you ate.
  48. >”You go first.”
  49. >You needed a minute before you began.
  50. >You brought your hands to your face and rubbed your eyes.
  51. >Not the first time this happened, but that didn’t make it any easier.
  52. ”I lost my job.” You blurted.
  53. >Dancing around the fact would only make things worse.
  54. >She chuckled.
  55. >But you could hear the bitter gloom in the laughter.
  56. >She hugged your arm and leaned into you.
  57. “I’d say we’ve got… three months in the bank.”
  58. “Four, if we stretch it.”
  59. >”We’ll be fine.”
  60. >Her arm wrapped around your back, and she pulled you closer to kiss the side of your head.
  61. >”We always are.”
  62. >”What happened?”
  63. >You exhaled loudly through your nose, taking your time to collect your thoughts.
  64. “There was a fire…”
  65. “While I was driving to work.”
  66. “Big one, chemical plant.”
  67. “Could see the smoke miles away.”
  68. “It was on the car radio too, I…”
  69. >The wolf nodded.
  70. >And smiled.
  71. >A genuine, small smile.
  72. “I can’t ignore that.”
  73. >She knew where this was going.
  74. ”Pulled into a parking garage and…
  75. >”Suited up.” She finished, cracking a small, genuine smile.
  76. >You nodded.
  77. “Faster than driving.”
  78. “Firefighters waved me down. Told me a few workers were trapped in there.”
  79. >”You did the right thing.”
  80. >You nodded again.
  81. >Too bad your boss couldn’t hear that story.
  82. >Late during your probationary period?
  83. >Fired. No exceptions.
  84. “Oh, got a ticket too.”
  85. “I was in such a rush I never paid for that stupid parking spot.”
  86. >You held each other close, lightly rocking back and forth.
  87. >Despite being in front of you the whole time, you hadn’t registered what was on her laptop.
  88. >It was the news.
  89. >The preachy anchor was on one side of the screen.
  90. >An upshot of a viscous-looking macro wolf was on the other.
  91. >And a manipulative, nasty headline topped it off.
  92. >You stretched a socked foot to close the lid of the computer, but the girl held up a hand to stop you.
  93. “That, uh…”
  94. “That’s worse than usual.”
  95. >The wolf in your arms huffed and buried her face into your chest.
  96. “Tell me when you’re ready.”
  97. >You looked at her superhero outfit haphazardly strewn over the table.
  98. >Untold thousands of lives saved.
  99. >Billions in property damage averted.
  100. >Crisis after crisis stopped.
  101. >And vilified for it.
  102. >Real or otherwise.
  103. >”I went to the mall, like I said this morning.”
  104. >”The one on the east side.”
  105. >”Was gonna return this…” She said, flapping the baggy sleeves of her sweater to and fro.”
  106. >”But then I got the idea of looking for a smaller one. You know, getting a size that fits.”
  107. >You nodded.
  108. >”And when I was trying the new one in the changing room, well…”
  109. >”The kaiju a-alert began blaring on my phone…”
  110. >You remembered hearing the alarms earlier.
  111. >The all-clear came a few minutes after.
  112. >”So I started suiting up.”
  113. >”And I got real worried, and, a-and I thought it said it was already in the city.
  114. >She blubbered her words.
  115. >You ran your fingers through her creamy-blonde hair, trying to comfort her.
  116. >”I gre-he-hewwwww…!”
  117. >”Right through the mall!”
  118. >You cursed.
  119. >When she grew, anything and everything around tended to break.
  120. >Except her outfit.
  121. >That thing was damn near indestructible.
  122. >Sure enough, the news cut to an aerial shot of the mall.
  123. >The corner of the mall was devastated.
  124. >Rubble covered the street and rooftop of the building.
  125. “Was anyone…?”
  126. >You were afraid to finish the question
  127. >She shook her head, flinging tears onto your shirt.
  128. >Thank God.
  129.
  130. >If there’s one good thing about online shopping taking off, it was that.
  131. >”But it could’ve happened!
  132. >Poor girl must’ve been watching the news for any signs of casualties.
  133. >Grainy security camera footage showed cracks forming in the sides of the department store before a pair of growing paws pushed the wall into the street.
  134. >Your masked girlfriend’s head popped through the top of the mall, sending rubble in all directions.
  135. >The girls’ ears, both in the video and next to you, pressed against her head in embarrassment.
  136. >There wasn’t any audio, but you’re pretty sure she was apologizing as she slowly climbed out of the wreckage.
  137. >”So, I was real careful, I looked around and made sure everyone was safe.
  138. >You weren’t surprised that the news cut that bit away.
  139. >Wouldn’t fit their narrative.
  140. >She brought a hand to her face in embarrassment.
  141. >”God, I apologized so many times when I was climbing out of the rubble.
  142. >You knew her too well.
  143. “Then what?”
  144. >”And I looked around and, you know, I can’t see past the tall buildings in the finance district, but I heard roaring at the harbor, so…”
  145. “Uh…”
  146. “Franklin or East Spring?” You asked.
  147. >”I sprinted down Franklin.”
  148. >”Less traffic. Fewer light poles.”
  149. >”It’ll be a few weeks before they pave all those paw prints.”
  150. “It happens.” You reminded her. “It’s inevitable.”
  151. >”Ugh…”
  152. >”Living up to the ‘She-Wrecks’ name, I guess.”
  153. >The media’s newest nickname for her.
  154. >You scratched the base of her ear.
  155. >“So, yeah, big kraken monster in the harbor.”
  156. >”We do our thing, sent it packing, but…”
  157. >She waved a hand towards her laptop.
  158. >”Why do they expect everything to be so perfect!?”
  159. >Helicopter footage showed the fight.
  160. >It was brutal.
  161. >She and the beast traded blows that could break skyscrapers.
  162. >And you noted she kept taking blows whenever she repositioned herself to stay between the creature and the city.
  163. >The aftermath of capsized boats and broken piers and interviews with tossed sailors was showcased next.
  164. >Speculation on what she prevented and saved took a backseat to images of destruction.
  165. >”Like, I can’t not kick up tidal waves when I’m wrestling a something that big.”
  166. >She collapsed against the couch’s backrest.
  167. >”So, yeah, put a bunch of mall workers out of jobs on top of almost squashing them.”
  168. >”Ruined an avenue.”
  169. >”Smashed the harbor.”
  170. >Her hunger got the best of her.
  171. >She fiddled with the parchment around her sandwich and sighed.
  172. >”And my phone got obliterated when I outgrew the mall.”
  173. >God, you hoped insurance would cover that.
  174. >Given your finances, she might have to use a burner phone for the foreseeable future.
  175. >After a tentative sniff, she took a small bite of the sub.
  176. >She grimaced while chewing, and swallowed the food with difficulty.
  177. >”Blegh.”
  178. >”They messed it up, too…”
  179. >You unwrapped yours to find most of the contents spilled out.
  180. “Perfect end to a perfect day.” You bemoaned.
  181. >”Here’s to the good guys.” Your girlfriend said, poking her sandwich against yours.
