  1. >You open your eyes slowly to the sound of knocking.
  2. >"May I come in, sir?" says a soft feminine voice.
  3. "Sure, I guess?" you mutter. "Come in."
  4. >Still half-asleep, you sit up and watch as the door opens.
  5. >A female earth pony in a maid uniform comes in quietly.
  6. >She pushes a little food cart inside with her mouth.
  7. "Oh, is that breakfast?"
  8. >The mare freezes on the spot when she sees you.
  9. >You sigh as you remember yesterday's events.
  10. "Please don't-"
  11. >"AIIIIEEEE!"
  12. "-scream."
  13. >The maid panics as several tentacles sprout out from the shadows.
  14. >Before she can run, they shoot out and entangle her legs tightly.
  15. >You put your hoof to your head as they pull her closer to you.
  16. "Not again..."
  17. >The tentacle-vine things hold her down spreadeagle in front of you.
  18. >One of them wraps itself around her mouth, silencing her.
  19. >"Mmmph! Mmmph! Mmmph!"
  20. >While another slowly starts loosening her uniform.
  21. >"Mmmph~"
  22. >Nope. Nope. Nope.
  23. >You shake your head and force away your sleepiness.
  24. >While a part of you is thankful for the show,
  25. >You better stop this before it gets worse.
  26. "Stop, vile creatures!" you cry out.
  27. >The tentacles stop moving at your command.
  28. >You get off the bed, raise your hoof and stand tall.
  29. "Return to the shadows, from whence you came!"
  30. >The creatures slowly set the mare free,
  31. >And vanish as they return to the shadow,
  32. >Your shadow, that is.
  33. "Figures."
  34.
  35. ---
  36.
  37. >The maid looks up at you with fearful eyes.
  38. >She shakes nervously, unable to move.
  39. >"A-Are you going to eat me?"
  40. "Of course, not! That's crazy!"
  41. >She covers her hooves over her face in response.
  42. >Looking closer, your eyes fall upon her slender form.
  43. >Her uniform is partially undone, exposing her pale coat.
  44. "..."
  45. >"..."
  46. >The pony maid peeks at you from her hooves and notices your gaze.
  47. >In a very quiet voice, she whispers slowly.
  48. >"Are you going to 'eat' me, instead?"
  49. "..."
  50. >It takes a few seconds for you to realize what she means.
  51. "N-No! O-Of course, not!"
  52. >You quickly clear your throat and look away.
  53. "T-That's crazy!"
  54. >"..."
  55. >An awkward silence follows.
  56. >After what seems like eternity, you hear her get up.
  57. >She doesn't meet your eyes as she puts the breakfast tray on your table.
  58. >And without another word, she bows curtly and pushes the cart out of the room.
  59. "Phew!"
  60. >You wait a few minutes, half-expecting the Royal Guard to come rushing in.
  61. >But nothing of the sort happens.
  62. >That actually ended better than you expected.
  63. >Are things finally returning to some form of normalcy?
  64. >With a shrug, you eat your breakfast and prepare for the day.
  65.
  66. ---
  67.
  68. >You step out from your room, surprised that there are no soldiers standing guard.
  69. >In fact, you don't see any other ponies at all along the hallway.
  70. >They're probably all afraid of you. Not that you can blame them.
  71. >With a sigh, you start wandering around aimlessly.
  72. >After a few minutes, you bump into a lone guard.
  73. "Ah!"
  74. >"Huh? Ah! I-IT'S YOU!"
  75. >Despite being heavier built and armed, the guard takes a couple of steps back.
  76. >He doesn't run away screaming though. You take that as a good sign.
  77. "Good morning."
  78. >"U-Uh, sure. Good morning, sir!"
  79. >The guard swallows nervously and averts his gaze.
  80. >Well, you better find a non-background pony and move the plot along.
  81. "I'm a bit lost. Do you know where I can find Princess Celestia?"
  82. >At those words, he suddenly salutes.
  83. >"The Princess is waiting for you in the throne room."
  84. "I see. Any chance you can show me the way?"
  85. >He quickly shakes his head. You raise an eyebrow.
  86. >After clearing his throat, he gives his excuse,
  87. >"I-I need to finish my morning patrol."
  88. "Oh, I see."
  89. >But before he leaves, he gives you clear directions to the throne room.
  90. >That is pretty damn decent of him, you think.
  91. >A few minutes later, you find yourself in front of the throne room.
  92. >Guards on either side of the door nod slightly for you to enter.
  93. >They remain silent as you go through the large double-doors.
  94.
  95. ---
  96.
  97. >Princess Celestia smiles as you approach.
  98. >"Good to see you again. Did you sleep well?"
  99. "Last night was very restful. Thank you very much, Princess."
  100. >The Alicorn giggles and shakes her head.
  101. >"No need to be so formal," she says.
  102. "Eh? But-"
  103. >To your surprise, she stands up from her throne.
  104. >"You must have had a very difficult journey to get here."
  105. >She takes a few graceful steps toward you.
  106. >"Why don't you stay here in the castle a little longer?"
  107. "Stay here? B-But-"
  108. >You cannot hide your surprise at Celestia's offer.
  109. >However, her smile widens ever so slightly at your reaction.
  110. >"That is, unless you have somewhere else to go?"
  111. "Somewhere else," you repeat.
  112. >She's got you there. You take a moment to think.
  113. >You barely remember how you got here.
  114. >You don't even know if it's possible to return.
  115. >And your current form will likely get you killed or worse.
  116. "I'll gladly take your offer, Princess-"
  117. >"Just Celestia will be fine."
  118. >She gracefully holds out her hoof towards you.
  119. >You hesitate for a moment before shaking it politely.
  120. >"Welcome to Canterlot," she says.
  121. "Y-You too," you mumble nervously. "Oh! You can call me-"
  122. >Without warning, she suddenly covers your mouth with her hoof.
  123. >She gives you a worried look and shakes her head.
  124. >"We'll call you Anonymous, for now."
  125. "Anonymous? But I'm-"
  126. >"Anon, for short."
  127. >Celestia holds her hoof to her mouth and gives you a wink.
  128. >"Let's keep things simple, shall we?"
  129.
  130. ---
  131.
  132. >Celestia quickly collects herself and clears her throat.
  133. >"And now that we are in agreement. I hope that you can assist us a bit."
  134. "In return for letting me stay in the castle?"
  135. >"Of course not," she says. "You may stay here as long as you like."
  136. "..."
  137. >"However, it is very rare for us to have guests with your..."
  138. >She pauses for a moment to choose her words carefully.
  139. >"... talents."
  140. "Talents," you repeat.
  141. >"Yes. We will not force you to assist us with certain..."
  142. >She pauses once more to choose her words carefully.
  143. >"...tasks."
  144. >"However, we would be very grateful if you choose to help."
  145. "I see."
  146. >You pause for a moment to consider her request.
  147. >Helping her seems to be the obvious option.
  148. >Celestia saved your life, and she does seem to be sincere.
  149. >However, you can't help but feel that she's hiding something.
  150. >Something important. Something VERY important.
  151. "Hmm."
  152. >She waits patiently for your response.
  153. >You smile and decide to cooperate for now.
  154. "I'll be glad to help you if I can."
  155. >Celestia sighs in relief.
  156. >"That is excellent news. I'll be counting on you from now on."
  157. "Alright. So is there anything you need right now?"
  158. >The Alicorn nods solemnly.
  159. >"For today, I'd like you to head to the castle library."
  160. >"I have sent a pony there to retrieve some books, but she has not returned."
  161. >"Could you check up on her and make sure that everything is alright?"
  162. "Sure thing, Celestia."
  163. >And with that, you leave the room and prepare for your first task.
  164. >At least this doesn't sound like anything dangerous.
  165.
  166. ---
  167.
  168. >You find yourself in the castle library.
  169. >Rows of bookshelves stretch endlessly in all directions.
  170. >Looking up, you see several more floors filled with bookshelves.
  171. "Huh? Was the castle library always this big?"
  172. >You pause and try to remember, but these details were never clear back home.
  173. >With a shrug, you head inside to find the librarian.
  174. >However, the front desk seems empty.
  175. "Uh, is anyone in here?"
  176. >The whole place is quiet. Too quiet.
  177. >Almost like there isn't any other pony in this place.
  178. "Spooky."
  179. >"Spooky... spooky... spooky..."
  180. >Your voice echoes ominously against the walls.
  181. >Nope. Something definitely doesn't seem right here.
  182. >You turn around to retrace your steps back to the exit.
  183. "What the-"
  184. >However, you can't seem to find your way.
  185. >In fact, you can't even recognize where you are right now.
  186. "What happened to the way out?"
  187. >"No way out... no way out... no way out..."
  188. >You quickly tell yourself that your mind is playing tricks.
  189. >But your gut tells you that this has "Bad End" written all over it.
  190. "Okay... I'm going to stop talking now."
  191. >"..."
  192. >This time, no echo. You swallow nervously.
  193. >Left with no other choice, you head deeper into the labyrinthine library.
  194. >You get the feeling that you are being watched from afar.
  195. >But every time you check behind your back,
  196. >You find yourself very much alone.
  197. "..."
  198. >Several minutes pass as you wander around the aisles.
  199. >You notice that it is slowly getting dimmer.
  200. >Window curtains are shut, and fewer candles are lit.
  201. >However, you feel strangely calmer while walking in the darkness.
  202. >Perhaps, it's because you seem to be some kind of creature of darkness yourself.
  203. >At the very least, you probably won't get eaten by a Gru-
  204. "Ow! What the-"
  205. >Something small and soft suddenly bumps into you.
  206. >"Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't see where I was going and-"
  207. >Huh? Isn't that-
  208.
  209. ---
  210.
  211. >Twilight Sparkle stares at you with mouth agape.
  212. >"AH! AH! AAAAHHHH!"
  213. >Before you can react, her horn starts glowing.
  214. >Several heavy books levitate from the shelves and fly towards you.
  215. "Ow! Ow! Stop it!"
  216. >You shield your face with your hooves, but the volley doesn't stop.
  217. >From the side of your eye, you see the purple pony run off at full speed.
  218. >"G-G-Get away from me!" she cries.
  219. "Wait! Ow! Don't go! Ow!"
  220. >You give chase, intent on finding her.
  221. >Celestia must have sent you to check on her student.
  222. >Besides, she's the only other pony you've seen in this empty library.
  223. "Come back! I'm not-"
  224. >As you turn the corner, you see Twilight aim her horn at you once more.
  225. >"I said, GET AWAY FROM ME!"
  226. "-dangerous!?"
  227. >Her eyes glow white for a split-second as she focuses her magic.
  228. >Without warning, she shoots a beam of pure white light straight at you.
  229. >You suddenly lose your balance and fall face-first on the floor,
  230. >And to your horror, both of your left legs plop off your body,
  231. >Severed cleanly from your torso by her magic.
  232. "ARGH! MY LEGS! ARGH!"
  233. >"S-Serves you right, you monster!"
  234. >Before you can reply, the pony runs off once more.
  235. "GAH! I can't feel my legs! I can't... huh?"
  236. >Oh wait. Actually, you CAN still feel your legs.
  237. >You stare in wonder and disgust as your severed limbs melt into black ooze.
  238. >The formless dark mass slowly crawls toward your torso, sealing your wounds.
  239. >And in seconds, it reforms into a new pair of legs.
  240. "Now that's really handy."
  241. >Or leggy. Whatever. The pain is gone, too.
  242. >You quickly stand yourself up, but Twilight is nowhere in sight.
  243. >For a nerdy bookworm, that pony sure knows how to run.
  244.
  245. ---
  246.
  247. >You gallop forward, checking each aisle for the purple pony.
  248. >As you go deeper into the library, your surroundings get even darker.
  249. >While this makes you feel even more at ease, you can't help but worry.
  250. "Come back! I-I don't think we're supposed to be here!"
  251. >You hear a faint squeak from your left.
  252. >Quickly, you turn and run towards the sound.
  253. >With a yelp, you hear her start fleeing once more.
  254. "Stop running, Twilight! I'm here to help!"
  255. >At those words, her hoofsteps slow down slightly.
  256. >She answers back from a few bookshelves away.
  257. >"W-Who are you? And h-how do you know my name?"
  258. "...umm."
  259. >You think for a moment.
  260. "My name is Anon. Celestia sent me here to find you."
  261. >Not the whole truth, but not exactly a lie, either.
  262. >But now that you think about it...
  263. >Why wasn't Celestia surprised that you knew HER name?
  264. "..."
  265. >Twilight's hoofsteps slow down a bit more.
  266. >"Anon, huh? Why should I believe you?"
  267. "She told me that you were sent here to retrieve some books."
  268. >"And why exactly would the Princess send YOU to find me?"
  269. "...umm."
  270. >She has a good point. Why DID Celestia send you here?
  271. "I don't really know," you admit. "But I promised that I would do this for her."
  272. >"You promised? What exactly did you promise, then?"
  273. "That I would find you and make sure that you're alright."
  274. >"..."
  275. >At those words, her hoofsteps come to a halt.
  276. >Suddenly, you see Twilight teleport some distance in front of you.
  277. >She narrows her eyes and whispers darkly.
  278. >"And why should I trust you?"
  279. "Umm..."
  280. >Think fast! Think fast! Think fast!
  281. "Because, friendship is magic?"
  282.
  283. ---
  284.
  285. >Twilight raises her hoof to her mouth and gasps.
  286. >She stares at you blankly, unsure of how to react.
  287. >Did you just solve this encounter with diplomacy?
  288. "Oh shit."
  289. >Without warning, the expression on her face changes to one of pure disgust.
  290. >She angrily spreads her wings and flies high up in the air.
  291. >"How DARE you speak those words!"
  292. "Shit. Shit. Shit."
  293. >You made a huge mistake. How did you not notice?
  294. >This isn't unicorn Twilight. This is alicorn Twilight!
  295. >You got careless and somehow managed to piss her off.
  296. "S-Sorry, Princess. I just-"
  297. >"Spied on the private lives of my friends and I?"
  298. >"Tried to use this information to manipulate and deceive me?"
  299. >"And thought that I would just BEFRIEND you, just like that?"
  300. "Err.. n-not exactly."
  301. >Actually, she is pretty spot on. What the heck?
  302. >That probably would have worked if you didn't look like this.
  303. >You take a few steps back cautiously. Maybe you should just run?
  304. "Well, seeing that you're alright, I'll just be going now and-"
  305. >"I don't think so."
  306. >Her horn glows brightly. In an instant, you feel yourself lifted from the ground.
  307. "W-What the-"
  308. >"Seeing as you have some kind of regenerative capacity,"
  309. >"It'll be useless to use conventional spells on you."
  310. >Twilight smiles smugly as her horn glows once more.
  311. >A spherical purple shield forms around you.
  312.
  313. ---
  314.
  315. >"Who are you working for?" asks Twilight.
  316. "Umm, Princess Celestia?"
  317. >"Wrong answer!"
  318. >The spherical shield starts to rapidly shrink around you. Your eyes widen in fear.
  319. >If you don't get yourself out of this, you'll certainly be crushed to death!
  320. "A-Are you crazy? This is torture!"
  321. >"This is an interrogation," she says coldly.
  322. >"Now let me ask you again,"
  323. >"Who are you working for?"
  324. "I told you! I'm working for Celestia!"
  325. >The shield shrinks even faster. You try hitting it with your hooves,
  326. >But your efforts are futile. Her magic is clearly resistant to physical attack.
  327. >"I'll ask you only one more time," says Twilight.
  328. "..."
  329. >Thinking fast, you come up with a dangerous idea. But you'll only have one shot.
  330. >You calm yourself down and focus your thoughts on your shadow on the ground.
  331. >"Who are you working for?"
  332. "..."
  333. >You don't answer. Instead, you whisper your commands under your breath.
  334. >Sure enough, several vine-tentacles start sprouting up from your shadow.
  335. >They silently shoot up towards the crazy purple pony princess...
  336.
  337. ---
  338.
  339. >The spherical shield continues to close in on you.
  340. >Twilight clicks her tongue irritably.
  341. >"No answer? Well, then."
  342. "Wait!"
  343. >She raises her eyebrow curiously.
  344. >However, she doesn't stop her magic.
  345. >"Yes, go on..."
  346. "I-"
  347. >Soon, there isn't enough space for you to move your legs.
  348. >You desperately curl yourself up into a ball.
  349. >"I'm listening."
  350. "Im-"
  351. >You start having difficulty breathing. Is this spherical cage airtight?
  352. >It takes all of your remaining strength to stay conscious.
  353. >There's no more time. It's now or never!
  354. "IMMOBILIZE HER!" you cry out.
  355. >"Wait, what?" she says. "That's not-"
  356. >Your vine-tentacles shoot out at the alicorn with terrifying speed.
  357. >Before she can react, they entangle her legs and body.
  358. >"AH! GET THEM OFF ME! GET THEM OFF-"
  359. "Nope."
  360. >Twilight tries to fly off, but it is no use.
  361. >In seconds, even her wings are wrapped by your shadowy pets.
  362. >She turns to you and contorts her face in an expression of pure rage.
  363. >"I knew you were a monster! Let me go, this instant!"
  364. "I will if you release your shield!"
  365. >"And then what? You'll capture and eat me?"
  366. "Of course not! I'm just defending myself!"
  367. >She narrows her eyes and hisses.
  368. >"Likely story," she says. "Unfortunately, I can't take any chances."
  369. >Her horn glows brightly. The sphere shrinks even faster.
  370. >You instinctively push back with your limbs, but it is no use.
  371.
  372. ---
  373.
  374. >"Serves you right, you.. URK!"
  375. >The sphere stops shrinking for a moment.
  376. >Despite your agony, you manage to glance at her.
  377. >The vine-tentacles have started tightening their grip on Twilight.
  378. >"L-Let go off me!"
  379. >Your eyes widen in horror as they start wrapping around her neck.
  380. >She desperately grabs at them with her hooves.
  381. "Don't hurt her!"
  382. >The creatures immediately stop moving at your command.
  383. >However, Twilight just growls at you.
  384. >"Y-You fiend! Your dark magic reveals your true colors!"
  385. "I don't want to fight you!"
  386. >"I knew you were evil from the moment I saw you!"
  387. "Stop it, Twilight!"
  388. >"And I won't let you hurt anypony else-"
  389. >Her horn glows bright once more as she cries out defiantly.
  390. >The sphere starts closing in rapidly around you,
  391. >Your bones crack as it starts crushing you.
  392. "AARRGGHH!"
  393. >"I'll stop you," she says. "Even if I have to take you down with me!"
  394. >Your whole body screams in pain as the sphere closes in,
  395. >And you're pretty sure your legs aren't supposed to bend that way.
  396. "GAH!"
  397. >Your tentacles start wriggling anxiously, awaiting your command.
  398. >There's no choice now. If you don't stop Twilight, you'll definitely be killed.
  399. >With the last of your strength,
  400. "..."
  401. >You whisper your (possibly) final instructions.
  402. >"W-What are you doing! D-Don't come any closer!"
  403. >The shadowy tendrils slide quickly around Twilight's body.
  404. >"S-Stop it! D-Don't touch me like that! Y-You can't just-"
  405. >They position their tips at their individual targets.
  406. >Twilight squeaks in fear as she realizes their intention.
  407.
  408. ---
  409.
  410. "...do it."
  411. >You cringe and close your eyes tightly as your pets execute your command.
  412. >She shrieks and screams as they come from all directions.
  413. >In just a few moments, her horn stops glowing.
  414. >The shield shatters instantly.
  415. >You fall unceremoniously to the ground,
  416. >Breaking whatever bones remain unbroken.
  417. "AAARRRRGGGHHH!"
  418. >It takes a minute, but you somehow recover.
  419. >Black ooze seeps out from your wounds as you quickly regenerate.
  420. >In fact, you notice that the darkness of the library seems to help.
  421. >But your suffering is nothing compared to Twilight's.
  422. >"Ah... N-No... S-Stop..."
  423. >You can barely watch as your pets continue their assault.
  424. >Her voice echoes loudly along the walls and ceiling.
  425. >You fear that she might pass out at any time,
  426. >So you call out for your minions to pause.
  427. "Do you yield, Twilight Sparkle?"
  428. >"Y-Yield? N-Never!"
  429. "Then, so be it."
  430. >"N-No! P-Please don't-"
  431. "I'm so sorry," you whisper under your breath.
  432. >The vine-tentacles continue their relentless assault,
  433. >Tickling each of her hooves, her belly, her spine, her neck,
  434. >None of the purple pony's sensitive spots are spared
  435. >From your heartless TenTickle attack!
  436. "..."
  437. >You shake your head at that horrible pun,
  438. >And turn your attention to the now helpless alicorn princess.
  439. >"Y-You won't...ha ha ha... get away with... ha ha ha... this... ha ha ha!"
  440. >You can't help but grin slightly.
  441. "I already have."
  442. >This continues for several minutes more,
  443. >Until finally, she taps her hoof in surrender.
  444.
  445. ---
  446.
  447. >"So, let me get this straight," says Twilight.
  448. >"You appeared in the middle of Canterlot,"
  449. >"You were attacked by the Royal Guard,"
  450. >"Princess Celestia saved you,"
  451. >"She gave you a room in the castle,"
  452. >"And now you're doing errands for her?"
  453. "Yep. That's pretty much it."
  454. >She stares at you blankly for a moment before shaking her head.
  455. >"I still can't believe it," she says. "That's crazy!"
  456. >You nod solemnly in complete agreement.
  457. "It is crazy," you say. "But it's the truth."
  458. >"Ugh! Stop saying things like that!"
  459. "Why not?"
  460. >"It's just not... normal, alright?"
  461. >The purple pony paces back and forth, still trying to figure this all out.
  462. >"In fact, NONE of this is normal!"
  463. "..."
  464. >You just shrug and wait patiently. As much as you'd like to help, you have no idea what's going on.
  465. >Heck, you're just thankful that you're alive. Battle-mode Twilight is crazy scary.
  466. >Mental note: DO NOT PISS HER OFF EVER AGAIN.
  467. "So, what now?"
  468. >Twilight stops pacing and gives an exasperated sigh.
  469. >"Guess I have no choice," she mutters. "I don't have enough evidence right now..."
  470. >She turns to you and frowns.
  471. >"You are coming with me. No funny business."
  472. "Alright. Where are we going?"
  473. >"I need to finish gathering the books Princess Celestia requires."
  474. >Twilight turns around and starts walking deeper into the library.
  475. >As you follow behind her, she pauses and glances at you with an odd look.
  476. >Blushing slightly, she points her hoof at your tentacles.
  477. >"A-And would you PLEASE put those away, already?"
  478.
  479. ---
  480.
  481. >Twilight leads you to a brighter part of the library.
  482. >She trots over to a small book cart and starts pushing it with her magic.
  483. >Curious, you glance at the books in the cart.
  484. >None of the titles are particularly familiar to you.
  485. >However, you get the worst feeling as you read the covers.
  486. "If you don't mind me asking," you say. "What are these books about?"
  487. >The purple pony pauses for a moment.
  488. >She frowns a bit and stares at you.
  489. >"Dark magic," she whispers.
  490. "Wait, what?"
  491. >Twilight sighs and starts pushing the cart forward.
  492. >"Most ponies aren't allowed anywhere near these books,"
  493. >"But Princess Celestia asked me to collect them for her today."
  494. "Hmm. But why?"
  495. >"The Princess didn't tell me."
  496. >She glances at you suspiciously.
  497. >"How about you?"
  498. "Huh?"
  499. >"Do you know why she wants these books?"
  500. "N-Nope! She didn't tell me anything, either. Honest!"
  501. >The pony frowns at you hard.
  502. >With another sigh, she starts walking again.
  503. >"What is going on? None of this makes any sense..."
  504. "..."
  505. >Both of you fall silent, but you continue following her obediently.
  506. >After a few minutes, she leads you to a small display case.
  507. >Inside is a heavy-looking old tome.
  508. >There is no title on the cover.
  509. >A small sign beside it reads, "DANGER. DO NOT REMOVE."
  510.
  511. ---
  512.
  513. >Twilight leaves you with the cart and walks towards the display.
  514. >"This is the last one."
  515. "..."
  516. >She closes her eyes and aims her horn at it.
  517. >The display case starts glowing and shaking violently.
  518. "Um, Twilight? Are you sure this is a good idea?"
  519. >The moment you say that, the purple pony is thrown back by an unseen force.
  520. >You somehow manage to catch her in your hooves.
  521. "Gotcha!"
  522. >She is surprisingly light. And soft.
  523. >"T-Thanks," she mutters weakly.
  524. "Careful, now. Are you alright?"
  525. >The pony grimaces as she gets back on her feet.
  526. >"Another barrier," she says. "How many of these are there!?"
  527. "Huh?"
  528. >She raises her voice, clearly irritated.
  529. >"I've about had it! Do you even know how much magic it takes to disable these things!?"
  530. "S-Sorry?"
  531. >Twilight plants a hoof on her face and shakes her head.
  532. >"Never mind. I guess I'll have to come back for this one later."
  533. "..."
  534. >She starts heading back when you find yourself approaching the display.
  535. >"Eh? What are you doing?"
  536. "For some reason, I think we need this book."
  537. >Before you realize it, your mouth starts whispering words on its own.
  538. >Words that you don't know. Words that you don't recognize.
  539. "..."
  540. >Almost immediately, a pair of tentacles sprout from your shadow.
  541. >They slowly lift the glass display and remove the book from its place.
  542. >And without hesitation, they add it carefully to Twilight's book cart.
  543. >She stares at you, open-mouthed.
  544. >"H-How did you get past the barrier?"
  545. "Actually, I have no idea..."
  546. >And you're not sure if you want to find out.
  547.
  548. ---
  549.
  550. >The purple pony asks you several questions as you make your way back.
  551. >Who are you? What are you? Why are you here? Etc.
  552. >None of which you manage a satisfactory answer.
  553. >You do share more about how you first arrived.
  554. >Minus almost violating a couple of innocent mares, of course.
  555. >She nods slowly when you mention Celestia.
  556. >"If the Princess is helping you, then I suppose I can give you chance, as well."
  557. "Thank you, Twilight."
  558. >"But, this is strange. The way you describe things, it's almost as if she-"
  559. >She stops and stares at you curiously.
  560. >Then, she blushes and quickly shakes her head.
  561. >"Nah! It couldn't be! Could it?"
  562. "What are you talking about?"
  563. >"N-Nevermind. Just a silly thought..."
  564. >She laughs nervously and changes the subject.
  565. >Still, you can't help but ask yourself,
  566. >Why is Princess Celestia going out of her way to help you?
  567. "..."
  568. >Some time later, you find yourselves at the exit.
  569. "Phew! I thought I'd never get out of here."
  570. >"But why? The Canterlot castle library is one of my favorite places!"
  571. "Huh? Oh, I didn't mean it that way! Earlier, I-"
  572. >Twilight shakes her head disapprovingly.
  573. >"Hmph! I guess that someponies just can't appreciate a good read!"
  574. "..."
  575. >You open your mouth to argue, but decide against it.
  576.
  577. ---
  578.
  579. >The guards salute when you arrive at the entrance of the throne room.
  580. >"At ease," says Twilight. "I'm here to visit Princess Celestia."
  581. >"Go ahead, Princess Twilight," says the left guard.
  582. >"She is expecting you," says the right guard.
  583. >The double-doors open as the purple pony pushes her book cart inside.
  584. >You try to follow, but you are blocked by a pair of spears.
  585. "Huh?"
  586. >The two guards try their best to look stoic and fail miserably.
  587. >"W-We can't let you pass," says the right guard.
  588. >"T-This is a private audience," says the left guard.
  589. >Twilight turns around and shakes her head.
  590. >"Sorry, but this could take a while."
  591. "It's alright. Guess I'll just wander around the castle."
  592. >The purple pony gives you a worried look.
  593. >"Be careful while you're here," she says.
  594. "..."
  595. >The double-doors close behind her.
  596. >Huh? Be careful? What did she mean?
  597. >Isn't Canterlot castle the safest place in Equestria?
  598. >You uneasily trot back to your room as you take in her words.
