- This photo was taken by Jeff Widener and made him a nominated finalist for the Pulitzer. He grew up in
- Southern California where he majored in Photojournalism. In 1974 he received a scholarship beating
- 8000 students which enabled him to conduct a study tour of East Africa. In 1989, he was hired as an
- Associate Press Picture Editor for SouthEast Asia where he covered major stories in the region from the
- Gulf War to the Olympics. He now lives in Hamburg, Germany.
- Widener was assigned the task of capturing the scene of the Tiananmen crackdown on June 5, 1989. By
- bringing camera equipment and film to the hotel where he took the photo, he ran the risk of being
- denied entry. But, a fellow American, Kirk Martsen, helped him get inside the hotel and also helped get
- him extra film when he ran out.
- Prior to taking this photo, 2 days ago, Widener was injured after a stray rock hit him in the head during a
- mob scene. Thankfully, his camera absorbed most of the shock, leaving him relatively unharmed. It was
- quite a turn of events that lead to him taking the picture of the Tank man.
