  1. This photo was taken by Jeff Widener and made him a nominated finalist for the Pulitzer. He grew up in
  2. Southern California where he majored in Photojournalism. In 1974 he received a scholarship beating
  3. 8000 students which enabled him to conduct a study tour of East Africa. In 1989, he was hired as an
  4. Associate Press Picture Editor for SouthEast Asia where he covered major stories in the region from the
  5. Gulf War to the Olympics. He now lives in Hamburg, Germany.
  6.
  7. Widener was assigned the task of capturing the scene of the Tiananmen crackdown on June 5, 1989. By
  8. bringing camera equipment and film to the hotel where he took the photo, he ran the risk of being
  9. denied entry. But, a fellow American, Kirk Martsen, helped him get inside the hotel and also helped get
  10. him extra film when he ran out.

  12. Prior to taking this photo, 2 days ago, Widener was injured after a stray rock hit him in the head during a
  13. mob scene. Thankfully, his camera absorbed most of the shock, leaving him relatively unharmed. It was
  14. quite a turn of events that lead to him taking the picture of the Tank man.
