  1. Chapter 5
  2.
  3. >You drum your fingers quickly, as the brew slowly boils.
  4. >Chrysalis stares at you worriedly, back in her changeling form.
  5. >Behind her, is a group of lesser changelings.
  6. >They literally followed you home.
  7. >Turns out, the city was infested with these creatures.
  8. >Feeding on average ponies- they lived an… adapted lifestyle.
  9. >The whine from the kettle catches your attention, as you slowly make your way to it.
  10. >You were so used to waking up to that noise in the morning.
  11. >You would run downstairs, to face your mother, always making some strange mixture in that kettle.
  12. >You push the thoughts away as you pour the greenish-black liquid.
  13. >You seal the warm mixture, and pocket the container.
  14. >You push in several more vials, and take a single swig.
  15. >There, that will keep the coughing down for a while.
  16. “Chrys, you ready?”
  17. >She still has that pitying look on her face.
  18. >You want to wipe it off, you don’t need pity.
  19. >Mother always said actions speak louder than words.
  20. >”Anon, the- my people and I have been talking…”
  21. “Your people? When did you grow that sentiment? Or that ego?”
  22. >”Save it, Anon. If they want me to be their queen-“
  23. >A spark of joy lights her face, before she covers it away, noticing your displeasure.
  24. “What did you talk about?”
  25. >”What we will do after this…”
  26. >You raise a brow.
  27. >You better be careful with your words, Chrysalis.
  28. >”Issue.”
  29. “And now you’re their leader, just-“ You snap your fingers. “-like that?”
  30. >She nods.
  31. >”Who else to lead but me?”
  32. “Ignoring that, what’s the plan?”
  33. >Chrysalis nods at a changeling, and he (?) steps up.
  34. >”As far as the scouts could pick up, the rival queen is in the southern part of the slums.”
  35. >You nod once.
  36. “And?”
  37. >The changeling hesitates for a moment, before continuing-
  38. >”We also found out that the rival queen is the leader of the local crime group, having a monopoly over every resource over that area.”
  39. >”Good thing that place is a shit-hole.” Chrysalis chimes in.
  40. >You ignore her, as the changeling continues.
  41. >”Our plan was to cause some civil unrest in the area, and spread her forces thin.”
  42. “What’s our number?”
  43. >”Around thirty or so willing men.”
  44. “When are they available?”
  45. >”As soon as the queen commands.”
  46. >You turn to Chrysalis, who nods.
  47. >The changeling watches you intently, before he proceeds.
  48. >”As soon as her forces are spread thin, we can quickly round up the rogues and turn them under our queen’s cause.”
  49. “Turn them?”
  50. >”Yes, our queen has powerful… Scent.”
  51. >You can’t help twitching at the word.
  52. “Scent?”
  53. >”We changelings work under pheromones. It would be hard for you to grasp the idea.”
  54. >You shrug.
  55. “Fine.”
  56. >”And once we are done, we can march straight up to the rival queen, and eliminate her.”
  57. >Chrysalis suddenly cuts to the front of you, blocking the changeling.
  58. >”OR, we could go with my plan.”
  59. >Both the changeling and you are focused on Chrysalis.
  60. >What scheme was she up to now?
  61. >”How about we march straight up to her base, and end her trouble right there?”
  62. “Christie, I don’t think-“
  63. >”No, you don’t. Look, if I’m as influential as they think, then why don’t we just remove all of the seriousness?”
  64. >Before you can muster up an answer, the changeling pops in.
  65. >”That… might work.”
  66. “Christie-“
  67. >”Look, you want that bitch gone, do you?”
  68. >You stay silent.
  69. >”I thought so.” Chrysalis turns to the changeling. “Commander, prepare the forces, we move out now.”
  70. >The commander nods, before heading out.
  71. “Christie, you sure about this?”
  72. >The changeling queen looks surprised.
  73. >”Anon, I thought you liked it better this way- faster to the point.”
  74. “I’m just worried we’re walking into fire here.”
  75. >And for once in the afternoon, she laughs, albeit a quick-lived one.
  76. >Her solemn expression returns, and she comes to lean on your shoulder.
  77. >”You alright?”
  78. >That was the final blow.
  79. >All floodgates opened, and you soon found yourself sobbing.
  80. >Your tears wet the old wooden floor below.
  81. >You wrap around her, and wipe your tears.
  82. “It’s not fair, Christie.”
  83. >She gently strokes your hair, sighing at the scene.
  84. >”It never is.”
  85. “We just got her back, Christie.”
  86. >Chrysalis goes silent here, and pulls you close.
  87. >”Anon…”
  88. “Yeah?”
  89. >A hoof slaps your face.
  90. >You hold your burning cheek, looking surprised.
  91. >”Man the hell up, we got trouble coming, and I can’t have you crying like a little filly.”
  92. >You quickly wipe the tears, and face Chrysalis again.
  93. >”Better?”
  94. “Much.”
  95. >”Now let us go visit someone.”
  96.
  97. >You look around the dying neighborhood, packed to the brim with poor, sick ponies.
  98. >The sight reminded you of your own condition, to which you took another swig on your drink.
  99. >It was foul, but the stench drowned it all.
  100. >Chrysalis is right next to you, marching in her full Changeling glory.
  101. >A small crowd is behind you right now, and it grows larger as you progress.
  102. >All sorts of ponies, starts following Chrysalis blindly.
  103. >Many simply drop their work and follow a smell.
  104. >You’re guessing it is the pheromones at work.
  105. >Of course, more ponies that rally behind her, the smugger Chrysalis becomes.
  106. >They all have this blank expression, eyes shooting forward.
  107. >You try to ignore the stares coming from the normal ponyfolk and the stare from behind you.
  108. >It was almost frightening.
  109. >You look up to the rooftops to spot several changelings making haste, only to be pulled down by swarms of changelings from Chrysalis’ group.
  110. >There are light thrashing, before you can see bluish-green liquid.
  111. >There is a sound of chitin cracking-
  112. >And you look away.
  113. >After a few minutes of walking, you spot a mansion, which easily out-classed anything in this part of the city.
  114. >You spot a blockade few more blocks ahead, several well-armed changelings converging upon it.
  115. “Christie, this isn’t going to end well if we keep going.”
  116. >”I know.”
  117. >She pushes you into an alley, and quickly changes into a human.
  118. >”Come on, let’s climb.”
  119. >You hold on to the crack on the wall, and pull yourself up.
  120. “So, what’s the plan?”
  121. >”Easy enough, get me close so I can control them.”
  122. “How are we getting down without being stabbed?”
  123. >”We’ll improvise.”
  124. >She gives a signal to the commander, and the swarm charges to the barricade.
  125. >Your movements are fuelled by the war cry they let out, as you climb faster and faster.
  126. >You feel the cold, flat roof, and hoist yourself up.
  127. >You peek out to pull Christie up as well.
  128. >”We make a good team.”
  129. >You smile.
  130. “We always do.”
  131. >”Come on.”
  132. >She begins running, and then jumping over to the next building.
  133. >You can’t help but to feel the rush of excitement as you criss-cross through the roof tops.
  134. >Soon enough, you’re right above the entrenched changelings, wildly batting away at Chrysalis’ forces.
  135. >”How are we getting down?”
  136. >You smirk.
  137. “I got an idea.”
  138. >You stand up, and look down again.
  139. >Alright, just need to-
  140. >No time to think, you’re already running.
  141. >You push with your feet one last time against the edge, and you go off into the air.
  142. >You sail through the air, ignoring the shouts from behind you.
  143. >You aim your feet just right and-
  144. >You feel the impact on your legs, soaring up quickly.
  145. >You also hear a crack, a familiar sound.
  146. >And then you are thrown frontward.
  147. >You roll, to reduce the momentum on your body.
  148. >You come to a stop tumbling into several bodies, and you quickly spring to your feet.
  149. >You see several unconscious changelings in front of you.
  150. >They must have cushioned your fall.
  151. >You turn around to see a crushed changeling, slowly oozing out their distinctive blood.
  152. >You look up, and before you can muster a call, Chrysalis makes a jump as well.
  153. >She lands a clean shot, grabbing and letting a changeling absorb all of the impact.
  154. >She smiles and proceeds to remove the spears placed over the crowd.
  155. >You do the same, letting the changeling mob climb over and make their way to the mansion.
  156. >The swarm splits by you, letting you move unscathed.
  157. >Chrysalis is far ahead, back in her changeling form, leading the assault.
  158. >You march slowly, wondering how was Canterlot infested with these creatures.
  159. >Soon enough, the mansion erupts in fire, sending broken debris everywhere.
  160. >This can’t be good.
  161. >You join the changelings pouring in, and enter the besieged building.
  162. >You can see each side, biting and clawing onto one another.
  163. >No sign of Chrysalis and the other queen anywhere.
  164. >You dart around, trying to avoid any fire or fight.
  165. >You take a nearby stairs to the second floor, only to duck at an incoming magic bolt.
  166. >Yep, they’re here.
  167. >”You ruined everything!” the rival shouts.
  168. >”Great, now you know how he felt.” Chrysalis erects a shield, blocking an attack.
  169. >The rival grits her teeth, and fires a large bolt.
  170. >Chrysalis easily side-steps, and dodges the attack.
  171. >Which meant it was headed for you.
  172. >You let out a small yelp and jump to the side, barely missing the bolt.
  173. >Which easily blew a crater on the wall.
  174. >You come into full view, the rival changeling queen staring at you.
  175. >”There’s your boyfriend.”
  176. >Chrysalis quickly turns to you, unaware of the bolt coming her way.
  177. “Chrys! Behind you-“
  178. >You are cut off and thrown to the floor, due to the explosion.
  179. >Chrysalis falls to your side, limp.
  180. >You cough and try to get to your feet, but a hoof presses you down.
  181. >”Good thing you showed up, human.”
  182. >She lets out a cackle, as the smoke steadily filled the room.
  183. >”Looks like I get two things today- One, my only rival in this city is gone- and Two, you brought me all these changelings to control.”
  184. >Another laugh.
  185. >You begin to cough violently, not because of the smoke.
  186. >You reach into your pocket to grab your container, but a hoof stops your hand.
  187. >”Oh, but what’s this?”
  188. >In a single sweep of her legs, she bats out the container.
  189. >”The dying boyfriend? Oh, the drama-and I’d love to taste it, but I have my subjects to get to.”
  190. >She kicks the container, and flies out of the room.
  191. >You are left with the unconscious Chrysalis.
  192. >You stagger to your feet, wading through the thick smoke.
  193. >You cover your nose and mouth with your elbow, but your cough is already there.
  194. >You fall to your knees, still in your coughing fit.
  195. >You are given a single moment to draw a breath, before you go on coughing.
  196. >Did it always hurt this much?
  197. >You wipe your lips, clearing any fluids.
  198. >You are crawling now, trying to reach Chrysalis.
  199. >And then you finally see it.
  200.
  201. >A red stain on your hand.
  202.
  203. >You try to ignore it, and bite down any cough that is coming up.
  204. >In this heat and condition, it feels like your throat is being ripped out.
  205. >Was it Lung Rust?
  206. >Doesn’t matter.
  207. >You stand once more, and make a mad dash for the knocked out changeling queen.
  208. >Dammit, Christie, wished you weren’t a heavy sleeper.
  209. >You grab one of her forelegs, and slowly drag her to the nearest open window.
  210. >A wooden pillar falls, covering the room in burning ash.
  211. >Of course, some make it out to your mouth and nose.
  212. >You gag and wipe the tears forming by your eyes.
  213. >With a grunt, you lift Chrysalis, and begin to run.
  214. >The window was getting closer now.
  215. >You hunch a little, and try to cover Chrysalis as much as you can.
  216. >To be fair, she was your size, maybe bigger.
  217. >Heh- lose weight, Christie.
  218. >You turn in the last moment, crashing back-first to the window.
  219. >The glass shatters easily, as the flames cover the second floor.
  220. >You get a breath of fresh air- even if it stank of sewage.
  221. >The cooler air outside instantly brought relief to you, for a moment.
  222. >And then, gravity kicked in.
  223. >Likewise to the window, you land back-first.
  224. >Whatever oxygen you had left, it was knocked out of you.
  225. >You roll once on the damp ground, still wanting to protect her.
  226. >Not sure why.
  227. >Must be the pheromones getting to you.
  228. >You slowly drag your head to face Chrysalis, still out.
  229. >Just like her to sleep this one out.
  230. >Don’t ever change, Chrysalis.
  231. >You cough once, and turn to the skies.
  232. >You are still gasping for air, as far as you can hear.
  233. >You turn to her again.
  234. >Not sure why.
  235. >Maybe, just maybe-
  236. >You were-
  237. >Your eyes flutter, and everything slowly dims away.
  238. >And then, darkness.
