  1. As Mr and Mrs Gloop and their tiny escort hurried away, the five Oompa-Loompas on the far side of the river suddenly began hopping and dancing about and beating wildly upon a number of very small drums. 'Augustus Gloop!' they chanted. 'Augustus Gloop! Augustus Gloop! Augustus Gloop!'
  2.
  3. 'Grandpa!' cried Charlie. 'Listen to them, Grandpa! What are they doing?'
  4.
  5. 'Ssshh!' whispered Grandpa Joe. 'I think they're going to sing us a song!'
  6.
  7. 'Augustus Gloop!' chanted the Oompa-Loompas.
  8. 'Augustus Gloop! Augustus Gloop!
  9. The great big greedy nincompoop!
  10. How long could we allow this beast
  11. To gorge and guzzle, feed and feast
  12. On everything he wanted to?
  13. Great Scott! It simply wouldn't do!
  14. However long this pig might live,
  15. We're positive he'd never give
  16. Even the smallest bit of fun
  17. Or happiness to anyone.
  18. So what we do in cases such
  19. As this, we use the gentle touch,
  20. And carefully we take the brat
  21. And turn him into something that
  22. Will give great pleasure to us all —
  23. A doll, for instance, or a ball,
  24. Or marbles or a rocking horse.
  25. But this revolting boy, of course,
  26. Was so unutterably vile,
  27. So greedy, foul, and infantile,
  28. He left a most disgusting taste
  29. Inside our mouths, and so in haste
  30. We chose a thing that, come what may,
  31. Would take the nasty taste away.
  32. "Come on!" we cried. "The time is ripe
  33. To send him shooting up the pipe!
  34. He has to go! It has to be!"
  35. And very soon, he's going to see
  36. Inside the room to which he's gone
  37. Some funny things are going on.
  38. But don't, dear children, be alarmed;
  39. Augustus Gloop will not be harmed,
  40. Although, of course, we must admit
  41. He will be altered quite a bit.
  42. He'll be quite changed from what he's been,
  43. When he goes through the fudge machine:
  44. Slowly, the wheels go round and round,
  45. The cogs begin to grind and pound;
  46. A hundred knives go slice, slice, slice;
  47. We add some sugar, cream, and spice;
  48. We boil him for a minute more,
  49. Until we're absolutely sure
  50. That all the greed and all the gall
  51. Is boiled away for once and all.
  52. Then out he comes! And now! By grace!
  53. A miracle has taken place!
  54. This boy, who only just before
  55. Was loathed by men from shore to shore,
  56. This greedy brute, this louse's ear,
  57. Is loved by people everywhere!
  58. For who could hate or bear a grudge
  59. Against a luscious bit of fudge?'
  60.
  61. 'I told you they loved singing!' cried Mr Wonka. 'Aren't they delightful? Aren't they charming? But you mustn't believe a word they said. It's all nonsense, every bit of it!'
  62.
  63. 'Are the Oompa-Loompas really joking, Grandpa?' asked Charlie.
  64.
  65. 'Of course they're joking,' answered Grandpa Joe. 'They must be joking. At least, I hope they're joking. Don't you?'
  66.
