- Handout p. 21 - Listen to the conversation and take notes.
- Then answer questions 7-11
- 7 D (She apologizes but that isn’t her purpose. She already turned it in before the conversation. She should get help with statistics later from someone else.)
- 8 B
- 9 A and C (she hasn’t yet analyzed her statistics, so it can’t be B)
- 10 A (Comparing things that are too different (like comparing apples and oranges) is a problem with her proposal.) (The professor mentions all of the other things, but they aren’t why he says this specific sentence.)
- 11 D (The professor says they’re going to ask about this, which implies that they won’t understand it. “You need to explain how you’re going to select your subjects.” => They won’t understand this if you don’t explain it.)
- (The reason that C is correct for 9 is because of 11D.)

- Question types on the listening section:
- - factual information = questions about specific facts from the listening (8 and 9)
- - summary / main idea = questions about the main point or purpose of the lecture or conversation (7)
- - rhetorical purpose = questions about why someone says something (10)
- - inference = questions about what is implied but not stated explicitly (11)
- ---
- Listen to the classroom discussion and take notes.
- ---
- The listening passages will be from lectures, conversations, and discussions. There is one of each type in each set of 3 passages. (Remember, you will have 2 or 3 sets on the TOEFL.)
