  1. “-tai?”
  2. My freaking head.
  3. MY FREAKING HEAD!
  4. Wait, where am I?
  5. This isn’t the hallway.
  6. This…this looks familiar though. Am I dreaming?
  7. “Good morning, sunshine.”
  8. Oh god it’s a wet dream.
  9. “N-nurse? Where am I?”
  10. “Shhh, shh, stay still. You’re probably still woozy and reeling.”
  11. Oh I’m feeling SOMETHING, alright.
  12. “Wha-what happened? Why am I here?”
  13. “You’ve met with a terrible fate.”
  14. What?
  15. “Excuse me?”
  16. “I said you had an accident.”
  17. That-that doesn’t sound like what I thought he said.
  18. “I did?”
  19. “You hit your head on a pole and blacked out.”
  20. “That doesn’t sound too fun.”
  21. “From what we can tell, you crawled all the way from the third to first floor. You’re quite the toughie.”
  22. Stop it, b-baka. I’m blushing. I think. Do I still have enough blood for that?
  23. “Then how did I get here?”
  24. “W-“
  25. “Is she awake yet?”
  26. Oh god we’re not alone. Close, legs, close!
  27. “She just woke up, Megumi. Relax.”
  28. Megumi? What is she doing here?
  29. “Hmmmm?”
  30. “Aiko!”
  31. “Megumi?”
  32. “I’m so glad you’re okay!”
  33. “How did you know I was here? I didn’t even know I was here.”
  34. “I brought you in when I found you on the floor passed out.”
  35. Oh. Well at least I wasn’t raped. Or given a Shanghai Surprise.
  36. “That’s so sweet of you, Megumi.”
  37. “D’awww, it was nothing.”
  38. “Megumi, may Aiko and I have some privacy?”
  39. “Oh, of course, Nurse.”
  40. “And Megumi?”
  41. “Yes?”
  42. “Go back to class, baka.”
  43. “But-but”
  44. “I’ll do my best to keep you informed.”
  45. “Awwww, ok.”
  46. As she reluctantly wheels her way out the door, Nurse turns back to me.
  47. “So, Aiko…”
  48. “Yesssss?”
  49. “Are you generally…accident prone?”
  50. “Not really. Buddha knows what’s up with this week.”
  51. “You’re lucky we’re partnered with a major hospital.”
  52. “How so?”
  53. “We’dve otherwise had to call for an ambulance. Luckily, we have access to some pretty nifty resources, like the local blood bank.”
  54. Nifty? Eh.
  55. “Did you call my parents or something?”
  56. “Not yet. It’s only been an hour and I was stuck in a meeting after you came in.”
  57. So you left an unconscious eighteen year old girl alone in your exam room while you dealt in paperwork and bureaucracy? What a gentleman.
  58. “Would you like to call them?”
  59. “Um…sure, I suppose.”
  60. I pull out my phone and start dialing the number.
  61. I can only imagine their reactions.
  62. “AIKO! DARLING! I KNEW WE SHOULD HAVE NEVER LET YOU GO TO THAT HORRIBLE CRIPPLE SCHOOL! YOU’RE COMING BACK HOME IMMEDIATELY!”
  63. “IT’S OFF TO THE MILITARY ACADEMY FOR YOU, MISSY!”
  64. It begins to ring.
  65. “Moshi moshi!”
  66. “Mom?”
  67. “Aiko? How are you?”
  68. “Um…you see…”
  69. “Oh no.”
  70. I look over to nurse pleadingly. Don’t make me do this.
  71. Thankfully, he acquiesces.
  72. “I can take it from here.”
  73. “OK. Um, Mom, I’m going to pass you to the Nurse.”
  74. “Ok dear.”
  75. The weight of a thousand burdens and an unimpressive phone are lifted from my dainty hand by this…medical savant.
  76. They start talking for what seems like forever. It’s amusing to watch him talk as he gestures wildly with his free hand to someone who will never see it. Put him in a fancy costume and crazy makeup and he’d blend it with a Kabuki theatre. Then again, anyone in a fancy costume wearing crazy makeup would fit in with Kabuki. He’d be the young soldier returning home from war a victorious man only to see his wife has found another lover. In an emotional stupor, he’d find some unsuspecting farm maiden and plead for her touch for the night though she is several years his junior. And then they would…
  77.
  78. Oh no.
  79. No.
  80. I did not just…
  81. Please, god, no.
  82. I have to check. But at the right moment.
  83. Right when he’s looking away.
  84. ……….now!
  85. I shove my hand into my skirt quickly to survey the damage.
  86.
  87. Well, shit.
  88. Pull back, pull back!
  89. He turns around just as my hand makes its great escape. I don’t think he suspected a thing.
  90. Nurse closes up my phone and hands it back to me.
  91. “What’d she say?”
  92. “She was understanding. Accidents do happen, after all.”
  93. “Of course.”
  94. “Now, there is another matter I need to discuss with you.”
  95. “Hm?”
  96. “We need to update your medical records. Your most recent ones are from two years ago.”
  97. “So you’ll call for my doctor?”
  98. “No. I’m licensed to do primary care as well as nursing. So I was thinking this would be an opportune moment to give you a physical exam.”
  99. God dammit.
