A história do anime se passa em um "Japão feudal futurístico e pós-apocalíptico", onde, aquele que conseguir a bandana simbólica de "Número Um"(o homem mais forte do mundo), irá comandar o mundo, como um "deus". Por sua vez somente o número três pode desafiar o número dois, e assim por diante até o número sete, onde todos podem desafiá-lo. Mas isso muda quando o novo número um tem todas as outras bandanas, exceto a de número dois (sob domínio de Afro), então todos podem desafiar o número dois e somente o número dois pode desafiar o número um deixando a missão de Afro quase impossível. Quando alguém completar as sete bandanas, ninguém poderia desafiá-lo, mas nada impede de que alguém mais forte o mate e roube as bandanas.

A história compartilha a mesma ambientação da Universidade de Kyoto e alguns personagens de The Tatami Galaxy, outro livro de Morimi que foi adaptado em uma animação por Yuasa. Contudo, as histórias não se relacionam.
