- What steps do you take when you write a longer essay or article? Do you do any preparation or just start writing?
- p. 141 (273) term paper timeline
- - In a college class, you’d know at the beginning of a semester that you’ll have a term paper due at the end (it could be from 10 to 50 pages or more).
- Example:
- 1500 word book review and 7500 word essay (6 and 30 pages double-spaced)
- If you had a 10-page paper to write in 2 weeks, how could you prepare?
- p. 142 (274) - ways to generate a topic idea (term papers usually have very general instructions and you need to find something more specific to write about)
- ---
- In a class, you have done reading about many different things and you have a conclusion that you want to write about in your next paper.
- Thesis statement (this is my conclusion, and I want to convince you that it’s true):
- “Smoking among teenage girls is rising due to influences by peers and advertising that glamorizes smoking.”
- What details will you need to support this thesis statement? (I think) there are 3 different things you’ll need evidence for if this is your thesis.
- 1 Smoking among teenage girls is rising. (you need to find statistics about how many teenage girls smoke now and how many smoked in the past)
- 2 Influences by peers affect the health choices of teenage girls.
- 3 Advertising glamorizes smoking and this also influences teenage girls.
- (It is probably not necessary to describe the side effects of smoking or what kinds of diseases can result if people smoke their whole lives.)
- p. 144 (276) sample outline - this doesn’t include anything about peers, but it gives examples to support the other two points
- ---
- Homework: Try to find the thesis statements of some magazine or website articles (editorials or opinion pieces) and predict the types of supporting details the rest of the articles will contain.
