- Introduction:
- -Rock and Steel types in OU:
- -Snorlax means that most teams will usually have one
- -The rock and steel types do not hard counter snorlax but they don't need to
- -The rock and steel types are genuinely good pokes in their own right and not just reliant on lax's dominance for their own viability
- -Golem's combo of Spin, Explosion, and Roar is both unique and effective
- -Tyranitar's Pursuit assists Snorlax, Machamp, and Cloyster greatly and is both unique and effective in doing it.
- -Steelix and Rhydon are Curse breakers, using Roar to prevent themselves from being phazed out by Roar, since Roar fails if used first. Rhydon is much stronger than Steelix while having a better second STAB, while Steelix has Explosion and lacks an Ice weakness.
- Rocks and Steels in UU
- -Them being so important in OU leaves very few left for the lower tiers and thus, the rocks and steels of UU are far less meta defining in their tier than the rocks and steels are in OU
- -Omastar is the only rock/steel that mimics what rocks do in OU due to checking the tiers best normal type (and arguable number 1): Granbull.
- -Despite this, Omastar is overall worse in UU than the rocks are in OU due to getting walled by more stuff (Lanturn and Slowking)
- -The other rocks and steels can't really replicate the role, or viability that the rocks/steels have in OU. Magneton gets destroyed by Hidden Power Ground from Granbull, Kabutops is frail, mostly a Swords Dance sweeper, and is almost never seen. Shuckle technically fits the role but is hard restricted to stall teams.
- -Although all of them can wall Dodrio, Dodrio, while good, is generally rare in UU.
- Rocks and Steels in NU
- -Unlike in OU and even UU, the best normal type in NU, Stantler is not checked at all by any of the rocks/steels (except Shuckle who is again, restricted to stall) because of them being frailer and Stantler having Earthquake
- -The rocks, however, check Fearow very well, who is a top tier threat, unlike Dodrio in UU
- -They also check non hidden power water Weezing
- -The rocks are though to switch into due to rock and ground being unresisted in NU as well as two of them having Explosion.
- -Although they have to run away from a top threat, Octillery, they can hit it hard on the switch unlike Ninetales
- -The rocks are generally extremely vulnerable to status due to not using Rest Talk
- Graveler:
- -Is mostly used as a spinner for balance teams
- -Balance teams prefer to play no spikes vs no spikes rather than spikes vs spikes due to pineco's lack of defensive utility as well as the defensive pokes on balance really hating dealing with spikes
- -Is good at spinning because of how useless Pineco is in general
- -Makes an infamously good pairing with Gloom (often referred to as GravelGloom), as Gloom beats Primeape and Electillery while Graveler beats Fearow and keeps spikes off for Gloom
- -Gloom notably is vulnerable to giving Pineco opportunities to spike which makes Graveler and even better partner for it.
- -Also works with other pokes that give pineco opportunites like Porygon and non Double Edge Wigglytuff
- -Gloom and Porygon can paralyze Xatu which makes Graveler far more threatening offensively since makes it makes far less risky to click Earthquake
- -It rise almost single handedly made Pineco start running Hidden Power Water or Toxic over Reflect
- -Can also fit on offensive teams with Pineco because playing with spikes on the opponent's side of the field while having none on your side is a massive, often game winning advantage. However, it's a tough fit due to Dugtrio being an overall better Ground type and how much it struggles vs Xatu.
