  159. these facilities. the weapons themselves. and the scientists
  160. and engineers who had developed them. the USSR
  161. quicklv acquired the nucleus of its own missile program,
  162. First used agai nsr London in June 1944. the V-I was
  163. an effective weapon svstern. It inflicted severe damage
  164. and casualties on Great Britain. and particularly London.
  165. in the latter pan 0 f the war. at the same time significantly
  166. curtailing war-time production in the London area. It also
  167. posed a serious problem [0- the Allied invasion of Europe.
  168. The Allies found it necessary to place high priorities on
  169. countering this threat, diverting aircraft from support of
  170. their invading armies to attacks on V-I sites and
  171. supporting facilities. The V-1- and the V-2-were
  172. also used effectively against cities and port facilities on the
  173. continent after liberation by Allied forces. Antwerp. in
  174. particular. suffered severe damage from massive attacks
  175. by these missiles. and the V-I in particular.
