  2. "Why are you crying, Princess? It's just some old rags." Says the green filly, a torn strip of black hanging over the rim of the garbage. A strip that was once a suit, worn by someone called Anonymous. Someone who was now little more than a shell of a mare, moulded exactly to what she thought was good. Twilight still heard the screams some nights, the begging to stop. She thought it was just his stubbornness, his recalcitrance to admit he was wrong! Now, he would never say anything again. All that was left is the mockery she forced him to become. Every smile and laugh reminding her of what she had done. Even the voice an echo of its former self, each syllable a stab of guilt. She felt a gentle hoof on her shoulder, opening her eyes to the touch of the green mares new hoof, eyes sparkling with worry. "Are you alright, Princess Twilight? You are crying. Is there anything I can do to help?"

  4. Twilight dreams fitfully, tossing under the light sheets of her bed. Anguished sobs echo fresh in her velvet ears, their softness unable to dull the ache of memory. She senses a heaviness atop her, one other than the ache of her heart in it's purple breast. Stirred to a gentle wakefulness, she dismisses it as Spike or a book from one of her late-night reading binges that she hasn't kicked off the bed. A floorboard creaks. That she doesn't imagine. Opening her eyes with a start, unsure of what she is expecting to find, fear floods her senses. Perhaps justice has caught up with her, or someone has learned the truth and come to enact justice. She lets her mind ramble, for anything she can imagine is less terrible than the truth.
  5. She screams. The sharp metal of a knife fills her vision, glistening in the pre-dawn light. With a clatter and whimper, her doubt and worries reveal themselves as a scared little green pony and a tray of breakfast scattered across the floor. The knife, slick with the melting slice of butter, and it's toasted companion, clattering off of the plate, skidding to rest it's mess at the hooves of a green filly, now awash with tears.
  6.
  7. Twilight Sparkle could bear the sun. It was the Moon she could not. Ever since she had crossed that line in the sand, nights were full of sorrow and fearful anticipation. The feeling of the Sun beating down on her was what she deserved, a just judgement. But it was the Moon who carried out the sentence, and each night Twilight wondered if this was the night the Moon would say goodbye for the last time.
  8. Dawn broke, it's pink-glazed skyline casting it's warm rays upon the tear-stained cheeks of the little green filly. Spike, the ever dutiful companion, had remade breakfast while Twilight focused on her mistake. Her failure. Her responsibility. This was how things were now. She could not bring him back. With a sigh, she held the trembling filly close, gently stroking its unruly tangle of green mane. "I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry...."
  9. When Applejack came to tell Twilight that her kid sister invited her to a teaparty, neither of them smiled. Twilight had told her friends what had happened to Anonymous. She thanked all her first editions that they were still talking to her. Still, she could sense the wariness with which AJ spoke around her now, speaking with an uncharacteristic softness. If this was out of commiseration from the loss or out of a wariness to rouse such a terrible event again, Twilight didn't know. Perhaps it was guilt. Applejack had held Anonymous down, but it was at her request. With a weary sigh, Twilight told AJ that she was sending Ano-the green filly in her stead. Applejack's silent response was deafening.

  11. Once the green filly, a bouncing bundle of energy at the prospect of meeting new friends, heard that she was off to join the Cutie Mark Crusaders, Applejack could barely keep up. The CMC only saw a new blank flank, a new Crusader, a new friend. With foalish giggles and the beginning of a long speech by Sweetie Belle, Applejack left the children to their games. Her sister, bless her soul, didn't know about what happened to Anonymous. And if AJ had her way, she never would.
  12. The walk back to the library was a long one. There was a touch of autumn on the breeze, blowing out across the Everfree. The harvest would start soon. Perhaps that would help marshal Twilight from her grief. Twilight had thrown herself into every book she could find, trying to fix her mistake. But every attempt to return Anon, to repair her damage, had failed. Twilight has said something about a shattered vase, about too many cracks and not enough left. Applejack shuddered, blaming it on the cool breeze. She dealt with things in her own way. As did Twilight, whom she found staining the musty pages of spellbooks with tears.

  18. hanging over the rim of the garbage. A strip that was once a suit, worn by someone called Anonymous. Someone who was now little more than a shell of a mare, molded exactly to what she thought was good. She had hoped, deep down that leaving the suit out as a reminder of what once was, would undo some of the damage she had caused, but that was, like most things she did anymore, just another miserable failure. The suit didn't bring anything back, it only made things worse. You honestly should have known better. Early on, the child would recoil in what seemed like a mixture of fear and pain when faced with the suit. You being the bone-head that you are, thought this was a breakthrough, that maybe it would bring him back to you, and you could apologize and do everything in your power to make amends.
  19.
  20. You are all too aware now, that this was just wishful thinking. Eventually the filly grew accustomed to the suit's presence, and YOU ended up being the one in tears when looking at it. The child's new-found need to do anything to keep you happy, led to this moment. She had cut the suit up and thrown it away. You bring yourself back from your thoughts and turn to look at your adopted child. The small filly was now crouched down on the floor, her ears folded over, and despite the mask of calm being worn, you could see the absolute terror in the child's eyes. A knot had formed in your gut, knowing that fear was probably the only real thing that this child could feel anymore.
  21.
  22. “I-I'm sorry, Princess.....Am I....am I a bad filly?”
  23.
  24. “N-no” Was all you were able to choke out, tears flowing unhindered down your cheeks. You practically lung for the child, pulling her into your embrace, sobbing incoherent apologies to a friend that you had destroyed. With the child still clutched to your chest, you once again lose yourself to your inner demons.
  25.
  26. Even now, you could still hear the screams some nights, the begging to stop. You had thought it was just his stubbornness, his recalcitrance to admit he was wrong! So you continued, so sure of yourself and your own inability to be wrong. Telling him that it was for his own good, never stopping to think that his growing disdain for you and your friends, was anything more than his unwillingness to say he was sorry, or that he needed to change
  27. And Now.......
  28. Now, he would never say anything again. All that was left is the mockery you forced him to become. Every smile and laugh a false uncanny forgery, cold reminders of what you had done. Even the voice an echo of its former self, each syllable a stab of guilt. Every single positive emotional display, a false, practiced response. You had committed an act beyond even the atrocities that Starlight Glimmer had done with her magic. You had completely and irrevocably destroyed a mind. Even with all of her conditioned responses to everyday life in Ponyville, you knew that she could never truly have a life now. You did this, and you would bare the burden.
  29.
  30.
  31. You would protect her forever if you had to, and may Celestia have mercy on anything foolish enough to bring anymore pain to the child, because much like you had with Anonymous. You will have no mercy to spare.
