- „The majority of our potential suspect discussion will center around the defined versions of uncompetitive, broken, and unhealthy and how a particular suspect element lowers some component of player skill within those three constructs.“
- II.) Uncompetitive - elements that reduce the effect of player choice / interaction on the end result to an extreme degree, such that "more skillful play" is almost always rendered irrelevant.
- This can be probability management issues; think OHKOs, evasion, or Moody, all of which turned the battle from emphasizing battling skill to emphasizing the result of the RNG more often than not.
- → Dynamic Punch paired with No Guard gives Machoke a 100% chance to confuse the opposing Pokemon. In ORAS, confused Pokemon have a 50% chance to hurt themselves in confusion. Considering how hard Machoke hits, every turn of confusion can get punished very hard. And switching out is not really a solid option either, since Machoke can punish every Pokemon in ORAS with Knock Off, due to the fact that Z-Crystals do not exist.
- III.) Broken - elements that are too good relative to the rest of the metagame such that "more skillful play" is almost always rendered irrelevant.
- These aren't necessarily completely uncompetitive because they don't take the determining factor out of the player's hands; both can use these elements and both probably have a fair chance to win. They are broken because they almost dictate / require usage, and a standard team without one of them facing a standard team with one of them would be at a drastic disadvantage.
- → From what I've experienced so far, Machoke does indeed dictate usage. Adding it to a team has basically no drawbacks and with the exceptions of some niche archetypes like stall, replacing one of your Pokemon with Machoke will almost always be beneficial.
- These also include elements whose only counters or checks are extraordinarily niche Pokemon that would put the team at a large disadvantage elsewhere.
- → Two of the main Machoke answers are physically defensive Quilladin and Tangela. Having your physically defensive option be weak to Fire and Flying is quite an issue, considering how potent Staravia, Monferno, Combusken and Rufflet are as physical breakers.
- → And to tie this together with II.) Uncompetitive: While Tangela is somewhat able to circumvent getting worn down by confusion and strong attacks from Machoke with Regenerator, Quilladin is very susceptible to being beaten this way, since it relies on active recovery in the form on Synthesis:
- 252+ Atk Machoke Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 96 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Quilladin: 49-58 (17 - 20.2%) -- possible 5HKO
- 252+ Atk Machoke Dynamic Punch vs. 96 HP / 252+ Def Quilladin: 111-132 (38.6 - 45.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
- Quilladin takes 17 - 20.2% when it switches in and then 38.6 – 45.9% every turn after that. Meaning it will most likely die if it hits itself in confusion when attempting to heal after the first Dynamic Punch.
- IV.) Unhealthy - elements that are neither uncompetitive nor broken yet are deemed undesirable for the metagame such that they inhibit "skillful play" to a large extent.
- When trying to argue a particular element's suspect status, please avoid this category unless absolutely necessary. This is a last-ditch, subjective catch-all, and tiering arguments should focus on uncompetitive or broken first.
- → I think there's no need to look at this category. I would, however, like to mention that the ORAS NFE metagame is very shallow as is. It is also very bulky because of the lack of Z-Crystals and the omnipresence of Eviolite. This makes the possible loss of a very potent breaker, Knock Off user, and overall good Pokemon in Machoke quite costly and might lead to unhealthy developments in the future. This is speculation, however, and should not be part of an objective tiering decision. I am just mentioning it, so we can keep a careful eye on possible trends like a rise in the viability of stall and bulky set-up options like Klang and Clefairy.
- –
- Given the small number of overall viable checks and the centralizing nature of Machoke, paired with the crucial ability to eliminate would-be checks with confusion, I will vote ban.
