  1. DreamHack Summer 2015 Writeup
  2. -------------------------------------
  3.
  4. Travelling to dreamhack went relatively smoothly, got only 2 hours of sleep since I had to leave my house at 4am, nothing was delayed.
  5.
  6. Met 360ChrisM at the airport and we travelled together to the Dreamhack using Swebus, again with no problems :) Chris passed out on the coach since he had no sleep at all.
  7.
  8. The first day of dreamhack went smoothly, hanged out with chris, flippy and noizeeh all day whilst relaxing in the twitch lounge.
  9.
  10. Twitch lounge was as awesome as last year, comfy chairs, tables and sofas around. A refreshment bar that offers free cans of Soda, tea and coffee. On the side of the refreshment bar was free candy and fruit all weekend.
  11.
  12. For the 120 star race with Noizeeh I wasn't too serious, seeing that I had focused mostly on 16 and 70 star I was pretty rusty in 120 (aside the 1200 star I did). Although I was rusty I kept up pretty well and was actually in the lead for most of the run until the retarded HMC deaths. Noizeeh was also really rusty but we kept pretty close even with us both sucking at 120 on the day :P
  13.
  14. My Tomba run was delayed till the morning, and instead was scheduled to 10:30AM, meaning I had to wake up earlier.
  15. After a while Biinny arrived, quite late due to his missed flight connection and getting stuck in Madrid. Biinny was as I expected, having a strong midlands accents and being a "Lad" as we call it in the UK :)
  16.
  17. Due to the first day of dreamhack being very social I ended up staying awake till 7am, the sleeping hall was completely full and the only place we figured out to sleep was on the couches in the streaming area..which also had issues due to rules of only being able to sleep if we sleep sitting up (no laying down).
  18.
  19. So I fell asleep and wake up shortly for my early Tomba run, after having gone to the Twitch Lounge and fueling up with a coffee for the day. The Tomba run itself went relatively ok, I was on world record pace for a good 20-30 minutes hitting all the 1 frame tricks up until the most important one (pheonix mountain skip) that saves 13 seconds. As the run went on I got trolled by boss RNG and failed the hardest section (GG Cave / Lava Cave). The rest of the run went smoothly. Overall I feel I did a great job demonstrating Tomba and tried my best to commentate in my sleepy state. I Wasn't entirely sure but I believe the chat enjoyed the run.
  20.
  21. After a few hours of hanging in the twitch lounge again with 360chrism, Biinny, Noizeeh and Flippy_o, the mario 64 races began on the stream. Me and Biinny did a few warmups and got pretty consistent LBLJS and overall good no reset runs. The 16 star run was funny since 360chrisM was actually ahead of me + biinny on the side. I actually failed LBLJ but had a very solid run aside cannonless, but overall I was really happy with this run because my main goal of dreamhack was to hit Pole Glitch on FireSea in the marathon, which did exactly happen and I executed the rest perfectly. It was really hype and the race was close due to this :D along with Biinny dying on FSea (noob)
  22.
  23. The 70 star race was just as fun since me and Biinny had overall pretty solid runs, just a few mistakes that cost 1-2 minutes before tippy but we could've both got 51 on that run with a solid ending. We both choked hard in Rainbow Ride (Reset Ride) which was hillarious for the stream but we choked nearly equally and ended up going into Sky + the final bowser pipe at the exact same time. I'm pretty sure this was extremely hype for the stream!
  24.
  25. Due to kinda bad scheduling I was forced to stay up till 4AM for my Ocarina of Time All Dungeons run which I had practised the most for, the run that was most likely to fail. When I submitted this run to Edenal I did it on the condition that this run may not finish due to huge run killers and time losses. So I stayed up all night and finally the GTA run ended which took forever. After getting Wess Escape first try I was actually relieved since it would've sucked to fail, then getting bottom of the well 1.0 strats first try was also a huge relief since after that the run is relatively safe for an hour.
  26.
  27. The run went relatively well until DC where the hover failed first try, then I failed the wrong warp due to pressing the input badly on the final pause frame..giving me a slash instead of a backflip (meh..) but it worked 2nd visit.
  28. Then I failed this next section in the prison and desert onwards horribly, I was getting flustered at this point since I felt embarassed and constantly kept failing easy sections like the prison escape and wastelands (and seriously I couldn't see anything on that t.v, the poles were blended in with the sand background so badly).
  29.
  30. Spirit Temple went great, even if I had to do 2nd try boss key skip it worked smoothly with my safe strat I practiced for marathon, along with killing nabooru safely.
  31. Failing the cutscene skip for Spirit Temple wasnt too bad, I probably jolted my analogue stick by mistake since I was 1 pixel too close to the Void.
  32.
  33. At this point the marathon run was going ok, I didnt waste too much time for the marathon and was easily going to meet my expectation for the final run time. So I got up to water temple and everything worked out great, I got the BK skip which was the biggest thing I worried about in the whole run and suddenly failed morpha, I backed up the morpha fight as I practised with stalling the timer and morpha escaped twice, which is a dead run at that point since the frog timer will teleport you all the way back to King Zora. It blows because at this point I was panicking and really didnt want this to happen, I tried my best multiple times to save the run by revisiting Water Temple and attempting the bomb hover but that version is nearly frame perfect (screwed because I had no bombchus left), I was very tired at this point and couldn't keep my head together as I failed individual parts more and more wasting a lot of time on the marathon, I would fail house clip for example after never failing it in runs/practice because I was so out of it.
  34.
  35. So after realising that I was probably unable to finish the run I called it and let 360chrism and flippy_o do some glitch showcases + the pokemon snap speedrun instead to fill in the extra time neccessary before the PC game afterwards.
  36. I took a long break and went to the toilet afterwards, really stressed about what happened and disappointed..until I got back and realised I could've actually finished the run if I just skipped the water medallion and continued the route like normal with the eyeball frog (literally right after water temple the same route). Even if it wasn't a fully completed run I would have been able to demonstrate the rest of it, this really bugged me even more and at this point it was too late since flippy_o was doing glitch demonstrations on mario kart :(
  37.
  38. Edenal woke up eventually during Pokemon Snap and had a go at me for not finishing my run, apparently messing up the schedule when in fact it was still on time and it wasnt my fault the tech wasn't there to get the next speedrun on the go. I submitted this run on the basis that its a showcase run and has a very high chance of failing, but could be very hype for the stream. A part of me feels like Edenal didn't catch that and had a go at me unfairly whilst on stream which makes it kinda worse.
  39.
  40. If ZFG, SVA or Moltov could demonstrate this run fully with modern strats that would be cool because I'm a bit disappointed the end of the run wasn't shown to the stream, literally the best part of the run with all the crazy wrong warps.
  41.
  42. Chris took me outside and helped me relax, made sure I got some fresh air and sat with me in the grass talking about stuff. We were both hugely sleep deprived at this point.
  43.
  44. After taking a little nap in the twitch lounge and relaxing for most of the final day I felt better about the whole mishap. Chilled out for most of the day in the Twitch Lounge and had an awesome interview on the stream there with @hot_bid about Smash, E-Sports, Speedrunning, Communities and more.

  47.
  48. Also had an awesome free massage to twitch partners only, which was a cool experience. The massager who worked for a local football club gave me a back + neck massage, loosening me up and helping with some of the pains of my back + neck caused by my bad chair at home and the low CRT I have to look down at.
  49.
  50. The evening came and me + chris went to the Twitch Party together. We got a lift and was driven to a barn 10 minutes out of town. Outside the barn was a bonfire with marshmellows, a hut to eat in and a barbecue set up to make fresh burgers (which were fucking delicious). The inside of the barn had a disco room upon entry with a DJ, a sideroom with a bar, and upstairs a huge seating area along with a second bar. The bars both offered free drinks including beers, wines, tequila shots, vodka and really trendy cocktail slushies (they were Krey). It was a pretty cool atmosphere and got to make connections with some new people. If I wasn't so tired and dead I would've enjoyed it a lot more but I kept getting cold due to the location. Deciding eventually to leave the party early and pass out in the streaming area for my flight in a few hours.
  51.
  52. Overall I loved Dreamhack as an event, seeing my speedrunning friends, the stream itself going great and the awesome twitch community there providing a great place to relax. My only regret was my preparation because I feel like I could've avoided the OOT mishap happening if I was more prepared, and shouldn't have got so down about it. Thanks to everyone who made Dreamhack happen, all my speedfriends + twitch people there, and Marshstomper for donating for me to attend the event!
