- 2016 = MMXVI - Are there any benefits to Roman numerals?
- ---
- Bring these listening notes tomorrow. We’ll also review and practice integrated writing.
- How did you organize your notes for the snowflakes listening? - Organize by type of flake (stars, prisms, and plates)
- The second one would be organized by medicine type.
- 3 - Icehouse, icebox, refrigerator
- 4 - Organize by type of cave formation
- ---
- General idea followed by specific examples is a very common lecture organization for the listening section as well as speaking questions 4 and 6.
- ---
- With integrated writing, the organization is usually an introduction with a main idea, followed by three arguments or points that support the main idea.
- ---
- Writing section - fourth section, after speaking
- 1 integrated writing: 3 minutes to read / time to listen / 20 minutes to write
- 2 independent writing: read the prompt / 30 minutes to write
- ---
- DELTA p. 369 - Take 3 minutes to read the article and note the important points.
- - The first thing to notice is that the article takes a position and supports it. This means the lecture will probably argue for the opposite position. (The other option is a description of something, which the lecture will probably illustrate with specific examples.)
- Main idea - the development is good
- 1 - it will beautify the area and make more people want to live there
- 2 - it will solve the problem of not enough residential area
- 3 - it will economically benefit the city
- ---
- development = good
- beauty
- residential
- economic
- - Your notes should be enough to remind you of what points to listen for in the listening.
- ---
- Now listen and take notes. What points from the listening corresponding to the points above?
- Main idea - development is bad
- 1 - it will destroy the view of the lake (a park would be better for beauty)
- 2 - homes will be expensive, so only for rich people; this won’t solve the residential problem
- 3 - only a few people and companies will economically benefit; it will hurt the environment of the lake
- ---
- You can help prepare by writing transition signals at the beginning:
- The reading and the listening are about
- The reading passage lists three reasons why
- However, the listening argues that
- First, the reading says
- The listening, on the other hand, says
- This contradicts the point from the reading that
- Second, the reading says
- The listening, on the other hand, says
- This contradicts the point from the reading that
- Third, the reading says
- The listening, on the other hand, says
- This contradicts the point from the reading that

- “Typically, an effective response will have 150 to 225 words.”
- ---
- DELTA p. 497 - Take 3 minutes to read the passage and note the important points. Then listen to a lecture and take notes.
- With your partner, take 5 minutes to write an outline of a response to the prompt.
