  1. Building THC Hydra for security auditing on Ubuntu 11 Natty
  2. By: Jackie Craig Sparks
  3. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  4.
  5. THC Hydra is a great security tool for auditing your passwords. Today we are going to go over building and installing from source in Ubuntu 11 Natty. In this build we will include support for openssl, idn, pcre, Postgres, SVN, Mysql, AFP, NCP, and also a GTK GUI.
  6.
  7. There are a few prerequisites in order to get Hydra to build. I also had to hack the configure file to allow support for afp (Apple Filing Protocol) and move some files around to get it to build.
  8.
  9. <code>
  10. First lets let apt do most of the dirty work for us. Issue the following commands in the terminal
  11.
  12. apt-get install libsvn-dev
  13.
  14. apt-get install libncp-dev libssh-dev libgtk2.0-dev libmysqlclient-dev libdb4.7 libdb4.7-dev libpq-dev libreadline6 libreadline6-dev libghc6-hsql-postgresql-dev libidn11-dev libpcre3 libpcre3-dev
  15. </code>
  16.
  17. This installs most of the requirements. Now for the stuff we need to do by hand. We are going to make a directory called "src".
  18.
  19. <code>
  20. cd ~/
  21. mkdir src
  22. cd src
  23. </code>
  24.
  25. We need to head over to "The Hackers Choice" THC for short. http://www.thc.org . Click releases from the menu bar in the top right hand corner. At the top of that page you will see THC-Hydra. Lets go ahead and download that package.
  26.
  27. <code>
  28. wget http://thc.org/download.php?t=r&f=hydra-6.5-src.tar.gz
  29. <code>
  30.
  31. FUSE needs to be installed for afp support. This allows programs to mount volumes in there userspace. FUSE is most famous for bringing full read/write support for NTFS to Linux. It is located here http://sourceforge.net/projects/fuse/
  32.
  33. Also move this to or "~/src" directory.
  34.
  35. <code>
  36. tar zxf fuse-2.8.5.tar.gz
  37. cd fuse-2.8.5
  38. ./configure && make && make install
  39. cd ..
  40. </code>
  41.
  42. Next we will go get the afpfs-ng from http://sourceforge.net/projects/afpfs-ng/ This adds support for afp (Apple Filing Protocol). Download that and place it inside our "~/src" directory.
  43.
  44. <code>
  45. tar jxf afpfs-ng-0.8.1.tar.bz2
  46. cd afpfs-ng-0.8.1
  47. ./configure && make && make install
  48. mkdir /usr/include/afpfs-ng
  49. cp ./include/* /usr/include/afpfs-ng/
  50. cd ..
  51. </code>
  52.
  53. After that and were almost through we are going to build for NCP support. Is a shared library used by programs that use NetWare Core Protocol.
  54.
  55. <code>
  56. apt-get source netatalk
  57. apt-get build-dep netatalk
  58. cd neta*
  59. ./configure && make && make install
  60. </code>
  61.
  62. Now we move into the hydra directory. We need to open up ./configure in your favorite text editor. I prefer vim but I won't hate on anyone that wants to use pico or nano, tho pico and nano are for girls ;)
  63.
  64. Find the following line around line 59
  65. AFP_PATH=""
  66. modify it like so
  67. AFP_PATH="/usr/local/lib"
  68.
  69. Then we need to go down further where it checks the directories for the library and the header files. Starting at line 375
  70.
  71. We want to remove the next 31 lines of code.
  72.
  73. Now we build
  74.
  75. <code>
  76. ./configure && make && make install
  77. </code>
  78.
  79. Hopefully at this point you will have a functional copy of THC Hydra with all the options listed above for the terminal and X windows(gnome if your the AWESOME) Feel free to contact me about any questions concerns at [email protected] 336.790.2126 . Thanks and have a great day
  80.
  81. I work from wifi hotspots and could not afford to download the 3 gigs of data for oracle and SAP/R3 . I also was having problems making firebird support happen. If you guys know how todo that then email me or write a tutorial how to do that. Thanks.
